Desmond is a character that is kidnapped by a corporation named 'Abstergo'. 'Abstergo' are intent to use him to unearth past memories of his ancestor. Desmond is a barman by trade, which leaves him very confused as to why he was kidnapped, at first.

The Animus is located in the centre of the laboratory of the Abstergo complex. The device induces the subject into a dreamlike state, and can evoke memories of the subject's ancestors. The Animus is monitored by a computer terminal.

The memories are all set in the year 1191. They coincide with the Third Crusade to the Holy Land. Many of the characters in the game are based on real people (For example, Richard the Lionheart appears in the game).

As Altair, the gamer finds him/herself in a guild of assassins. A task is set out out to assassinate the nine leaders of the guild's enemy organisations. Altair learns more about the real truth behind the reason for the assassinations as the game progresses.

Al Mualim proves to be very intelligent, yet mysterious as your character tries to gain his favour within the guild. Al Mualim has created the creed by which your character lives by. He is the head of the Syrian sect of assassin's with a stronghold in Masyaf.

'Al Mualim' can be translated as 'The Teacher'.

The four cities in the game are Jerusalem, Acre, Damascus and Masyaf. When your character is exploring these cities, he must climb structures (such as towers) to map out each area in order to effectively complete missions. Cairo, being a city in Egypt, was not key to the Holy Wars.

The 'Abstergo' corporation seems to be a 2012 offshoot of the Knights Templar in the game. The artifacts include the 'Piece of Masyaf' and the 'Piece of Eden'. 'Abstergo' believe that the 'Piece of Eden' was used to cause historical events such as the parting of the Red sea. The 'Piece of Eden' can be used to make others do the will of its possessor in the game.

A suspicious guard will have one hand on his sword and will be on his guard.
An informed guard knows that your character is an assassin and will have his sword drawn ready to kill.

In an eavesdropping mission, your character needs to find a bench near the target and become inconspicuous in order to hear the information required.
In a pickpocketing mission, your character must sneak up behind a target and steal the item in question (usually a letter or note). If your character isn't sneaky enough, the target can become aware and run away.
In an interrogation mission, your character must follow the target to a quiet spot and, well, beat him up until he confesses the valuable information to you.
