Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Do the majority of the Bug-types, in all four regions combined (up to "HeartGold/SoulSilver"), have a double weakness?

Answer: No

The answer is no, but it's a pretty close race. In all four regions combined, there are a total of 45-49 Bug type Pokemon. The numbers vary depending on whether you count the multiple cloaks that Burmy and Wormadam take on. No matter which number you take though, there will never be a majority of double weak bugs. Bug types are weak to three main types these being Flying, Rock, and Fire.

There are twelve bugs that are double weak to Rock, six to eight that are double weak to Fire, and only one that is double weak to Flying, which is Fighting/Bug type Heracross.

Much like Dragon types many of these bugs don't gain this double weakness until they're in their last evolved form. Some exceptions include Combee and Paras.
2. Bugsy is the Azalea Town Gym Leader and specializes in Bug types as evidenced by his name. What TM does he give you for beating him in "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold?"

Answer: the move that allows you to switch Pokemon after doing the damage

Much like Falkner, Bugsy has changed since his original days in "Pokemon Silver/Gold" for the Game Boy Color. He still has the same team, consisting of Metapod, Kakuna, and Scyther, but his moves have changed along with his gym. In "Pokemon Silver/Gold" his gym was fairly straight-forward just like most other gyms.

In "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold" his gym consists of a puzzle that requires you to ride bugs along certain paths and flip switches to get to Bugsy. In "Pokemon Silver/Gold" Bugsy would give you the TM for Fury Cutter, which is the move that doubles in damage every time it hits. That TM does not exist in "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold." The move that Bugsy uses this time around is U-Turn which is the move that allows you to perform a hit and run technique.

This is one of the three Bug type TM's in the game. The other two are Silver Wind and X-Scissor. Silver Wind is the move that has the possibility to increase every stat during battles, except for HP, by one level. X-Scissor is the move that just does damage.
3. Going along with the theme of powerful Bug type trainers, Aaron is the first of the "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum" Elite Four. However, he breaks the rules slightly by using what Pokemon that is not a Bug type?

Answer: Drapion

In "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl" most of the Elite Four had at least one Pokemon that did not fit in with their type preference. In "Pokemon Platinum" this changed with an expanded Pokedex which allowed all of the Elite Four to have all of their Pokemon correspond to their type, except for Aaron. Aaron could have added another Bug Pokemon but instead he stayed with Drapion. Drapion is the evolved form of Bug/Poison type Skorupi.

When Skorupi evolves into a Drapion it becomes a Dark/Poison type. This kind of throws a monkey wrench into the works as Bug types are not weak to Ground attacks, yet that is the only type of move that is super-effective against Drapion.

This can be nullified of course if you use Miracle Eye and hit it with a Psychic type move. Aaron's team in "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl" consisted of Beautifly, Dustox, Vespiquen, Heracross and Drapion.

In "Pokemon Platinum," he replaced his Beautifly and Dustox with a Yanmega and a Scizor.
4. Which of the following is NOT true about Shedinja?

Answer: it's ability only allows it to be hit by super-effective moves

Shedinja is a unique Pokemon as it just appears if a trainer has a spare Poke Ball and an empty spot in their party when Nincada evolves into Ninjask. Shedinja, a Bug/Ghost, type Pokemon has one of the best abilities in the game, Wonder Guard. Wonder Guard only allows super-effective attacks to hit it.

However, the option above "it's ability only allows it to be hit by super-effective moves," is not entirely true. Poison is not super effective against Bug types or Ghost types but if you use Toxic on Shedinja it will connect and Shedinja will be done for at the end of it's turn. Likewise, Shedinja is not weak to Ice but if Hail is used it will faint at the end of the turn. So even though it's ability is pretty good, sadly Shedinja will always only have one HP so any move that causes damage in some way to Shedinja will make it faint unless of course it has a Focus Band. Nincada is a Bug/Ground type and it's evolved form Ninjask is a Bug/Flying type.

When Nincada turns into Ninjask, Shedinja will have the exact same moveset that Ninjask has.

However, when leveling up Ninjask and Shedinja can learn different moves from each other. Also it will only appear if you have a spare Poke Ball in your inventory. If you have a Great, Ultra, Master or whatever type of ball and no Poke Ball it will not appear.
5. Excluding egg moves and previous forms, which Pokemon can NOT learn a Bug type move without the use of a TM or Move Tutor?

Answer: Celebi

Oddly enough, Fire type Rapidash can learn a Bug type move, but Grass/Psychic type Celebi, who kind of looks like a bug, cannot. Jolteon, Electric type, has been famous for the capability to learn Pin Missile which is like the Normal type move Fury Attack. If you think about it Rapidash is an obvious candidate for a Bug type move as it can learn the most powerful Bug type move, with an attack power of 120, Megahorn. Rapidash,Nidoking and the Rhyhorn series have horns so naturally all of them could in fact learn Megahorn.

While Nidoking learns Megahorn at level 58, the only way Rapidash can learn Megahorn is by using a Heart Scale. Jolteon learns Pin Missile at level 36. Gligar as well as it's evolved form Gliscor can learn three different Bug type moves.

They learn Fury Cutter at level 20, U-Turn at level 38, and X-Scissor at level 42.
6. In Japan, there was a Wi-Fi event giving away a special Scizor. Which status move did this Scizor NOT know?

Answer: Double Team

Scizor as many people know is the evolved form of Bug/Flying Pokemon Scyther. Scizor can be obtained by giving Scyther a Metal Coat as a held item and then trading it. Onix evolving into Steelix is the same method of evolution. As evidenced by the information above, Scizor only knows one offensive move and that is X-Scissor.

This Scizor is based off the one owned by a character named Goon in the Pokemon anime movie "Zoroark: Master of Illusions." This Scizor is at level 50 and has a Starf Berry as a held item.

A Starf Berry enables the user to raise any of it's stats by two. As of the end of 2010, it has only been released in Japan. It was available from June the 18th to July the 14th 2010. As of the end of 2010, release dates for other countries have not been revealed.
7. Pinsir can learn more Fighting type moves than Heracross. Only take into consideration moves that can be learned by leveling up. This is based off their "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold" move set.

Answer: True

Yes our old pal Pinsir, a pure Bug type can learn more Fighting type moves than Bug/Fighting Heracross. Pinsir originally appeared only in "Pokemon Blue" while Scyther appeared only in "Pokemon Red." However, in "Pokemon Silver/Gold" both of these Pokemon could be caught in the National Park during the Bug-Catching Contest.

As stats go, Heracross has a higher HP and Special Defense than Pinsir but Pinsir has a higher defense. If you give Pinsir a Black Belt or a Fist Plate and give it some Fighting type moves and it can be a real formidable opponent. Also, it doesn't have the double weakness to Flying that Heracross has. If you want a Bug type move without using a TM, Pinsir is also your Bug. Pinsir and Heracross both only learn one Bug type move. Pinsir learns X-Scissor at level 30, while you have to level up Heracross all the way up to level 55, but it does learn Megahorn.

In comparison Pinsir learns six Fighting type moves while Heracross only learns four.
8. How many different Bug types are there to catch in the Bug-Catching Contest in "Pokemon Silver/Gold?"

Answer: Ten

The Bug-Catching Contest in the National Park takes place every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. In "Pokemon Gold/Silver" for the Game Boy Color the ten available Pokemon to catch were: Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Paras, Venonat, Scyther and Pinsir. During the contest you were given 20 Park Balls and tried to catch the best Bug Pokemon you could find. Pokemon were based on their rarity (Scyther and Pinsir were the rarest), their level, how much HP they had left, and if they were a rare Shiny Pokemon. If you won the contest you got a Sun Stone which was necessary for evolving Gloom into Bellossom and Sunkern into Sunflora.

The same rules apply in "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold" except after getting the National Pokedex, on Thursdays and Saturdays Pokemon from the Hoenn and Sinnoh region can appear. On Thursdays, Silcoon, Volbeat, and Dustox could appear. On Saturdays, Cascoon, Illumise, and Beautifly could appear. Wurmple, Nincada, Combee, Kricketot and Kricketune could appear on both Thursdays and Fridays. Also, their levels jump into the high 20's and low 30's. If you want a lower level Kricketot, they occasionally swarm in Viridian Forest.

After getting the National Pokedex, the first prize changes to any one of the stones used to evolve Pokemon, including the Sun Stone.
9. Water Sport would be an excellent move for Bug types and surprisingly one bug and it's evolved form can. What is the name of the non-evolved bug that can learn Water Sport?

Answer: Surskit

Of course a Water/Bug type can learn Water Sport. Surskit and it's evolved form Masquerain debuted in "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire" for the Game Boy Advance. Water Sport is a Water type move that weakens the power of Fire-type moves while the Pokemon is in play. Now while this may not help Surskit all that much since it's part Water, Water Sport will help Masquerain who is a Bug/Flying type. Surskit is a blue Pokemon that resembles a pond skater.

While Surskit has the ability Swift Swim, which increases it's speed when it rains, Masquerain has the ability Intimidate which lowers the opposing Pokemon's attack by one level. Masquerain's ability comes from a tactic that some bugs in real life use.

By the patterns on their wings, they look more threatening so predators don't go after them. Masquerain is the same way as it's known as the Eyeball Pokemon.

While Surskit can learn Water Sport at level 19, Masquerain can only know this from evolving from a Surskit who knows it or using a Heart Scale.
10. There is only one Bug type that can be revived from a fossil found in the game. Judging by their classification, what animal is this Bug supposed to resemble?

Answer: shrimp

The only Bug Pokemon that can be revived from a fossil is Rock/Bug type Anorith which can be revived from a Claw Fossil. It's evolved form Armaldo cannot be directly evolved from a fossil. While Armaldo is known as the Plate Pokemon, Anorith is known as the Old Shrimp Pokemon. Anorith evolves into Armaldo at level 40. Both of these Pokemon only learn two Bug type moves and those are Fury Cutter and X-Scissor.

While Fury Cutter can be learned at level 37, X-Scissor is learned at a much higher level. Anortith will learn it at level 61, while Armaldo will learn it at level 73, provided you don't use a TM.
