Pokemon for Experts Trivia Questions

1. Arceus-Flying could only really do one thing in its debut generation of Ubers. However, it tended to perform that one thing incredibly efficiently. What niche did Arceus-Flying hold down here?

From Quiz
Competitive Pokemon History: Arceus-Flying

Answer: Stallbreaker

Arceus-Flying's Judgment had no immunities and was also narrowly resisted by relevant Pokemon, only Dialga, Tyranitar and opposing formes of Arceus which resisted Flying making the list. Thus, a mono-attacking set was viable. Alternatively, both Dialga and Tyranitar, popular candidates for the average stall team, could be smitten by Hidden Power Fighting, which also conveniently hit Blissey for super effective damage. Either way, a simple set of Judgment/Calm Mind/Recover/Refresh or HP Fighting posed a serious threat to stall teams, and gave Arceus-Flying a great niche in its debut generation.

2. Arceus-Normal didn't get the nickname "Extreme Killer" from nothing. What is the Extreme Killer's main sweeping tool, that it has used to deadly effect from the fourth generation all the way through the seventh?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemon History: Arceus-Normal

Answer: Extremespeed

Extremespeed is a +2 priority move with a 100 base power that has no drawbacks, save for its meager eight power points. Coming off of Arceus-Normal's decent 120 base Attack, this is the most straightforward, deadly physical sweeper in the fourth generation bar absolutely none.

3. Counting the two genders of the Hero as one, how many unique Warlords are in Pokemon Conquest? (NOTE: This refers to every character with a unique design and gold portrait background, not just the ones that lead kingdoms)

From Quiz "Pokemon Conquest" Warlords

Answer: Thirty-seven

37 unique Warlords make up the bulk of this game's story characters. 17 of them directly control kingdoms (like Yoshihiro and Motonari), but most of the others are subordinates for the kingdom's leaders (like Hanbei and Okuni). A third category contains four Warlords who have no allegiances to any kingdom - Keiji, Mitsunari, Kiyomasa, and Masanori.

4. Deoxys-S is sadly at the bottom of the barrel in third generation Ubers. This was ultimately because of one thing. What was this?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemon History- Deoxys-S

Answer: Deoxys-S' niche was not yet useful

Deoxys-S would end up becoming the best suicide lead, bar none, in all of Ubers later down the road. However, suicide leads were not useful in third generation Ubers. Hyper offense as a whole was incredibly gimmicky, and teams who need a hazard setting lead tended to defer to Deoxys-D, Skarmory or Forretress for this type of support. Deoxys-S' bulk isn't necessarily horrible, but it pales in comparison to the competition, namely being totally outclassed as a general hazard setter by Deoxys-D, whose superior bulk let it stick around to continually set hazards, wall threats, and disrupt the opposing team.

5. Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing are the headline new mechanics of the game. What is the difference between the two?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemonning- The Eighth Generation

Answer: Gigantamaxing offers the user an exclusive move, while Dynamaxing does not

Only a small selection of Pokémon have the ability to Gigantomax, while everything can Dynamax. Both mechanics share the same 2x boost to HP and movepool upgrade, but Gigantomaxed Pokémon have their own, exclusive move while Gigantomaxed. For example, Gigantomaxed Gengar is the only Pokémon in the game capable of using G-Max Terror, a very powerful Ghost type move with the added bonus of trapping the target and preventing them from switching- if they survive it, that is.

6. What color is the flower of Rita's Floette?

From Quiz "Detective Pikachu": Pokemon

Answer: Orange

Different Floette have different flower colors: red, blue, yellow, orange, and white. In this game, Rita's Floette has an orange flower.

7. Unlike past main series "Pokemon" games, "Sun & Moon" does not have gym leaders. Instead which characters are similar in nature to gym leaders?

From Quiz Pokemon Sun & Moon

Answer: Trial captains

There are seven trial captains: Ilima, Lana, Kiawe, Mallow, Sophocles, Acerola and Mina. After completing each captain's trial, the player receives a Z stone corresponding to that trial captain's preferred type. Other Z stones can be found scattered throughout Alola. Like most gym leaders, each trial captain specializes in a type. However, trial captains are not battled at first. Typically, the player completes a trial by venturing into a cave or similar place and battles a special, powered up wild Pokemon.

8. What is the first town in the game? (HINT: There is no Pokemon Center or Pokemart in this town.)

From Quiz "Pokemon OR/AS" Geography

Answer: Littleroot Town

New Bark Town is the first town in "Pokemon Gold" and "Silver". Petalburg City is a city north of Littleroot, where your Dad, Norman's gym is. Floaroma Town is in Sinnoh.

9. Mantyke evolves into Mantine when levelled up with a specific Pokemon. Which Pokemon is this?

From Quiz Pokemon Facts

Answer: Remoraid

Mantyke evolves into Mantine when levelled up with a Remoraid. The species of this chain is kite Pokemon. It's a water/flying-type Pokemon. Its major weaknesses are rock and electric. At 3 feet 3 inches it is the tallest baby Pokemon as of generation 6.

10. The game has begun in your home. Your home has something no home in the main "Pokémon" handheld games have ever had. What is this something?

From Quiz "Pokemon X&Y" [1]: Vaniville to Santalune

Answer: Your mom's bedroom

It's about time. With five previous regions and six houses (thanks to "Black2" and "White2" providing a second in the fifth generation), your mother is given her very own room. As unimportant as it is, it has been seen as a step forward for the character's mom who typically fell victim to the "living in the kitchen" jokes. Your mother does have a much more developed story line to her than previous mother's in that this time the characters mother is a professional and widely known Rhyhorn racer.

11. Who do you have to face after you get the Secret Potion from Cianwood City?

From Quiz "Pokemon" Gym Leaders

Answer: Jasmine

Jasmine will only fight you when her Ampharos has healed, and you need to get the Secret Potion to heal Ampharos. She sends you because she already knows that you've got four gym badges (five if you go to Mahogany Town before this) and she knows that you will do well against Chuck.

12. Each generation has released a new sea of Pokemon for players to train. In comparison with the original 151 released in the first games, which of the first five generations released the lowest number of Pokemon?

From Quiz General "Pokemon"

Answer: The "Precious Metals" Generation: "Pokemon Gold and Silver"

"Pokemon Gold and Silver" unleashed 100 new Pokemon, making the total 251 Pokemon. "Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire" increased this number to 386, releasing 135 Pokemon. "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl" added another 107 Pokemon. The only generation of the first five to release more than 151 Pokemon was the monochrome generation, releasing 156 Pokemon. "Pokemon Black and White" are also the first games since "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow" to be named after colors.

13. Out of the three Gym leaders that specialize in Rock types, who was the first one to use a pure Rock type?

From Quiz Radical Rock Types

Answer: Roxanne

When facing Brock in Generation I and Generation II, he does not have any pure Rock type Pokemon. However, a pure Rock type Pokemon was introduced in Generation II and that is the enigmatic Sudowoodo. Roxanne from "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald" was the first to use a pure Rock type Pokemon and that Pokemon was Nosepass. Roark from "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum" also used a pure Rock type Cranidos. Brock would not use a pure Rock type until the rematch against him in "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold" where he gets a Rampardos, the evolution of Cranidos. All Rock type Gym Leaders have used Geodude in some form. In "Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal," Brock uses a Graveler but he still has his Onix. He also improved his roster with a Rhyhorn, Kabutops, and an Omastar. Brock's initial Pokemon were Geodude and Onix which are both Rock/Ground types making starters Squirtle and Bulbasaur super-effective against them causing quadruple damage.

14. The Pokémon League is said to be the ultimate goal of Trainers like you aiming for the top. How many places in the Pokémon world that have appeared in the main series games are actually named "Pokémon League" (up to "Black" and "White")?

From Quiz Are You a Master Pokémon Trainer?

Answer: Two

Only the Pokémon Leagues of Sinnoh and Unova are actually called "Pokémon League" in the game. Kanto and Johto share the same League, and it is named Indigo Plateau. The Pokémon League of Hoenn is named Evergrande City. However, all of these places share the same function of being the ultimate goal of Trainers.

15. What is the correct way to evolve a Clamperl into a Huntail?

16. At what level does Lairon evolve into Aggron?

17. Excluding Flying types themselves, what is the only type of Pokemon that has not had Flying as one of their types (up to "SoulSilver/HeartGold")?

From Quiz Fantastic Flying Types

Answer: Fighting

Oddly enough types that would normally not go with Flying such as Electric, Rock, and Ground have all had at least one Flying Pokemon. A Rock/Flying Pokemon is Aerodactyl which can be revitalized from Old Amber. In "Pokemon Red/Blue" you get the Old Amber from a man at the Pewter City Museum. Then you can revitalize the Old Amber and whatever other fossil you got from Mt. Moon (a Dome Fossil producing a Kabuto or a Helix Fossil producing an Omanyte) at Cinnabar Island. For a long time the only Ground/Flying type was Gligar until it got another evolution in the Sinnoh region, Gliscor. Gligar would evolve into Gliscor if it was holding a Razor Fang and it was evolved at night. In the same way Sneasel would evolve into Weavile if it was holding a Razor Claw and was evolved at night. The Ghost/Flying type was introduced in the Sinnoh region in the form of Drifloon and Drifblim. Drifloon, much like Lapras in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" and "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" only appears on Fridays. It appears outside the Valley Windworks, near Floaroma City after ejecting Team Galactic. In the original "Pokemon Red/Blue" the three legendary birds were the only variations of Fire, Ice, and Electric types that were also Flying types. Zapdos still retains its title but Articuno is not the only Ice/Flying type as Delibird is also an Ice/Flying type and Moltres shares its Fire/Flying type with Ho-oh.

18. One reason dragons are so popular is because of their limited weaknesses. For the most part, Dragon type Pokemon have how many weaknesses?

From Quiz Domineering Dragons

Answer: Three

Most Dragon types are weak to Ice type moves and Dragon type moves. However, some Pokemon such as Kingdra or Dialga can withstand these moves because of their dual types. Likewise, dragons can withstand most attacks just like Steel types. The downside of them being weak to Ice though is that many Dragon types such as Salamence or Garchomp are dual types in where both of them are weak to Ice, making them extremely susceptible to such attacks. Up to "Pokemon Platinum" there have only been two Dragon-types that only have one weakness and that would be Kingdra and Palkia. These two Pokemon are Water/Dragon Pokemon making Ice not as effective and Dragons are not weak to Electric or Grass attacks. Their only weakness is Dragontype moves such as Outrage or Dragon Pulse. In later games, Dragons were also weak to Fairy.

19. A Hardy Cloyster with maximum EV's and IV's in defense will have how much Defense, precisely?

From Quiz 'Pokemon' Master's Challenge! Part 2

Answer: 499

Cloyster has an amazing 200 base defense, and as Hardy is a neutral nature, its defense plays by the normal Algorithms. On a neutral nature, the formula for calculating a stat other than HP (at Lv100) is: ((Base stat x2) + (EV's/4) + (IV's) + 5). For HP, the formula is: ((Base stat x2) + (EV's/4) + (IV's) + 110) For an advantageous nature, you use the correct Equation and multiply it by 1.1. For a disadvantageous nature, you multiply it by 0.9 instead.

20. What nature raises a Pokemon Attack stat, but lowers its Special Attack stat?

From Quiz "Pokemon" Nature Traits Exam!

Answer: Adamant

That's right, Adam Ant was the lead singer of the group, Adam and the Ants! Pokemon suitable for the Adamant nature are ones that have naturally high Attack stats. Machamp, Salamence and Metagross are all good choices!

From Quiz Pokenologies

Answer: Zapdos

Chikorita is the first grass Pokemon you encounter and Hoppip is grass and flying combined. 27. A Swords Dance sweeping set is something other formes of Arceus have been able to pull off effectively over the years. For Arceus-Flying, however, going this route has been quite underwhelming from generations 4-7. Why has this been?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemon History: Arceus-Flying

Answer: Lack of usable physical STAB moves

Arceus-Flying's best STAB options were the incredibly underwhelming Fly and the only marginally better Aerial Ace. It would need multiple Swords Dance boosts to even think about trying to sweep. Even then, those moves would be weak enough where the generally physically bulky Uber meta could still capably take Arceus-Flying on. Thus, a Swords Dance set was best left to more capable formes of Arceus, such as Dragon, Ground, Water and, of course, the Extremekiller.

28. Like all Arceus formes, Arceus' six stats all held the same value. What value was this?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemon History: Arceus-Normal

Answer: 120

Having a Base 120 in everything means all of Arceus' stats are good. They aren't amazing by any stretch, but with proper investment, it can hit very hard, take hits very well, and/or be quite fast due to its above average Speed stat.

29. Of course, being Deoxys "Speed" means that Deoxys-S certainly has had a sizable Speed stat. What stat was this?

From Quiz Competitive Pokemon History- Deoxys-S

Answer: 180

At base 180, Deoxys-S was by far the fastest Pokemon in the game. This designation would actually go totally unchallenged throughout the rest of its existence, which is ultimately why Deoxys-S was able to eventually blossom into a viable niche in Ubers.
