Answer: Breath of Fire

A SNES release from the early '90s, 'Breath of Fire' was the first in this Capcom-developed series. It opted for a turn-based RPG style of gameplay (not unlike 'Final Fantasy') and focused on Ryu, a boy with the ability to become a type of dragon (as is typical of other members of his ancient bloodline).

Originally released in Japan in '93, followed by the rest of the world in '94, 'Breath of Fire' was ported to the Game Boy Advance in 2001 with some minor tweaks and improvements.

Answer: The Sims

The creation of Will Wright, 'The Sims' is perhaps one of the most popular PC video game series ever created. Players are able to create a family of Sims and help them go about their lives by doing things like building houses, creating (or, indeed, dissolving) relationships, getting jobs and generally surviving in a world that you have a big amount of control over. Each Sim has needs and it's up to you to cater to their needs so they are able to continue living. For instance, a Sim might indicate that they're smelly, so you need to make sure they have a shower in the house; a Sim might try and cook and end up burning it, so you can provide them with cookbooks and help them become a better chef. 'The Sims' marked the first in a series of games that expanded to home consoles and raked in the sales.

Answer: Far Cry

Originally a Crytek creation (who later had success with the 'Crysis' series), 'Far Cry' put players in the role of Jack Carver, a former US Army operative, who found himself on a remote island where genetic experiments were going on. Though there were several games released after 'Far Cry', the sequel, 'Far Cry 2', was not developed by Crytek; instead, Ubisoft (specifically Ubisoft Montreal, later known for the 'Assassin's Creed' games) took on development.

Answer: Call of Duty

It's the game that started it all. Originally, 'Call of Duty' was a PC game that first released in 2003. Set amongst World War II, players could play in three campaigns, each representing one of the war's many forces: the British, the Americans and the Soviets. Both 'Call of Duty' and 'Call of Duty 2' were creations of Infinity Ward, with Treyarch taking on 'Call of Duty 3'.

This trilogy were modest successes, but the series gained an immense spike in popularity thanks to 2007's 'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare'. Since then, the 'Call of Duty' series became a global phenomenon, with alternating developers creating yearly releases to keep fans hooked.

Answer: Tomb Raider

'Tomb Raider' is the name of both the original 1996 release and the 2013 reboot. At the heart of every game has been Lara Croft, a British archaeologist who can more than hold her own in a fight. Over the years, many several actresses have provided the voice for Lara in the video games, and Angelina Jolie has even played Lara in the live-action films 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' and 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life', though these were less well-received than the games.

The 2013 reboot showed Lara in her vulnerable, early days before she became the kick-bottom character we've grown to like so much.

Answer: Wii Sports

Arguably the Wii's highest seller, due in part to it being bundled with almost every console sold, 'Wii Sports' showed off what Nintendo's then-new motion control tech could do. It featured five sports (golf, tennis, boxing, baseball and bowling) and well and truly ushered in an age of swinging limbs around in living rooms all around the world. 'Wii Sports Resort' arrived in 2009 along with the Wii MotionPlus peripheral which enhanced the Wii Remote's motion sensor tech, allowing for even more precise translations in movement from limb to screen.

Answer: Jet Set Radio

Rollerskating has never been cooler. In 'Jet Set Radio', players take to the streets of a Tokyo-esque city and graffiti until there's no tomorrow. Tricks and stunts can performed on the skates to get some extra boost. Various gangs can be defeated by out-graffiti-ing them and taking over territory in Tokyo-to.

While this game was originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000, its sequel, 'Jet Set Radio Future', was an Xbox exclusive.

Answer: Black and White

'Black and White', released in 2001, is Lionhead Studio's earliest game and brainchild of hypemaster general Peter Molyneux. Billed as a "god game", players were able to control various villages, with the ultimate aim of controlling them all. Performing certain acts would cause the villagers to believe in you, this god figure, and you can either be regarded as benevolent or anarchic. Several follow-up games appeared in later years, interspersed with Lionhead's popular 'Fable' games.

Answer: Crash Team Racing

Commonly abbreviated to CTR, 'Crash Team Racing' is considered by some to be the superior karting experience, compared to more popular games like the 'Mario Kart' series. 'Crash Team Racing' followed a handful of popular 'Crash Bandicoot' games by developer Naughty Dog, and this formula seemed to continue with their 'Jax and Daxter' series. 'Jak X' was a combat racing spinoff of the main series. Given this formula, the internet has humourously suggested that 'UnKarted' may be on the cards, a spinoff of the hugely popular 'Uncharted' series.

Answer: Rock Band

'Rock Band' followed the success of the 'Guitar Hero' franchise, enabling players to play a wider number of instruments. The drum kit peripheral was created especially for this game, allowing you and your friends to join in on the skins, lead guitar, bass guitar and vocals and belt out some of your favourite rock tunes.

A host of musicians have supported the series by allowing their songs to feature in the games, including the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Foo Fighters and the Rolling Stones.
