Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. EXAMPLE: A 2010 Quantic Dream game centered around the Origami Killer mashed with the first game in a series based on Tom Clancy novels. The two games in question are "Heavy Rain" and "Rainbow Six". Thus, the answer you would enter would be "Heavy Rainbow Six". Keep in mind that there is to be NO punctuation used throughout, and note the number of words required in each answer. Got the hang of it? Good luck. The Italian plumber's first SNES game mashed with Blizzard's epic MMORPG series.

Answer: Super Mario World of Warcraft

Mario's first outing in the 16-bit era was in "Super Mario World". The game is also notable for the debut appearance of Yoshi the dinosaur.

Blizzard has dominated the MMORPG genre for many years with its hugely popular "World of Warcraft". With over 15 million players worldwide, it has certainly stood out as the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
2. One of Rareware's first-person shooters featuring a character called Joanna mashed with a 2010 third-person shooter by Airtight Games.

Answer: Perfect Dark Void

Rareware perfected the FPS with "GoldenEye 007" in 1997, and "Perfect Dark" is considered to be a spiritual successor to that. Based around a special agent called Joanna Dark and her mission to stop a conspiracy by the dataDyne Corporation, "Perfect Dark" has spawned several sequels and novels. In 2010, it was re-released with graphical and gameplay enhancements on XBox Live Arcade.

In a unique third-person shooter, "Dark Void" sees players taking the role of William Grey as he tries to destroy an alien threat known as the Watchers. Although the game sold well (and a film version has been hinted at), critics weren't as impressed.
3. One of the first generation "Pokemon" games mashed with Rockstar's 2010 Western-themed open world game featuring John Marston.

Answer: Pokemon Red Dead Redemption

One of the first three games that started the "Pokemon" dynasty, "Pokemon Red" was released in Japan for the Game Boy in 1996. It was a whole two years before North America received the game. In 2004, both "Pokemon Red" and fellow first-generation game "Pokemon Blue" were remade for the Game Boy Advance as "Pokemon FireRed" and "Pokemon LeafGreen".

As a pioneering game developer in the open world action game market, Rockstar released "Red Dead Redemption" in 2010 to rave reviews. Players take the role of John Marston, a retired outlaw in 1911, who seeks to find a former fellow outlaw so he can see his wife and son again.
4. Isaac Clarke in his first interstellar adventure mashed with the classic arcade game involving shooting continually descending aliens.

Answer: Dead Space Invaders

I say this right now: I'm too scared to play "Dead Space", even though my friends say it's great and they recommend it. Anyway, developed by Visceral Games, the game focuses on Isaac Clarke aboard the USS Ishimura, a starship overrun by horrible, scary, reanimated human corpses called Necromorphs. A sequel hit shelves in early 2011.

Anyone who knows anything about gaming knows about "Space Invaders". Anyone who knows nothing about gaming knows about "Space Invaders". It is the classic arcade game played by millions around the world, and is considered one of the earliest proper games created.
5. Insomniac's flying purple reptile in his first game mashed with Bioware's RPG series beginning in 2009 with "Origins".

Answer: Spyro the Dragon Age

"Spyro the Dragon" started out on the PlayStation 1, created by those geniuses at Insomniac Games. So popular was Spyro that he, along with a few other characters, become synonymous with the PlayStation brand. Insomniac went on to create the next two games in the series, before handing it on to other developers.

Bioware has a track record of creating great RPGs, and "Dragon Age: Origins", the first game in the "Dragon Age" series, is just that. Taking place in the mythical country of Ferelden, the player must gain the assistance of all the country's factions in order to fight the Darkspawn, a malevolent race of creatures who attempt to take the continent of Thedas.
6. A PlayStation game based around vehicular combat mashed with Solid Snake's first 3D game.

Answer: Twisted Metal Gear Solid

The aim of "Twisted Metal" is to destroy all other vehicles to be the last one standing. This can be done through driving into enemies, blasting them with various weapons, and utilising the environment to bring about their demise. The first game in the series was released in 1995 for the PlayStation 1 and sold well, despite garnering mixed reviews from critics.

"Metal Gear Solid" was the first 3D entry in the "Metal Gear" series, created by gaming visionary Hideo Kojima. As with previous titles in the series, the gameplay involves stealth, and remaining undetected by enemies whilst infiltrating a research facility.
7. Link and Zelda's first 3D quest on the Nintendo 64 mashed with a series of rail shooters for both consoles and arcades.

Answer: Ocarina of Time Crisis

Undoubtedly one of the greatest games in history, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" set the standard for all 3D games. Once again, Link must set out to save the land of Hyrule from the clutches of the evil Ganondorf.

"Time Crisis" first appeared in arcades in 1995, and was later ported to the PlayStation 1. The series is based around rail shooter combat, with a terrorist organisation posing a threat to the world, and through the player's actions, it must be apprehended.
8. A Nintendo smash-and-bash series mashed with Gearbox Software's first-person shooter series based in World War II.

Answer: Super Smash Brothers in Arms

Who wouldn't want to pit Yoshi and Mario against each other in a fight to determine the last man (or dinosaur) standing? Well, you can do exactly that in the "Super Smash Bros." series. Featuring characters from a wide range of Nintendo titles, as well as a few from other companies in recent years, it's the original smash-and-bash we've all come to know and love.

Gearbox Software is known for its range of FPS titles - from the early days of "Half-Life" to more recent titles like the sci-fi shooter "Borderlands" and the cringeworthy "Duke Nukem Forever". However, their own "Brothers in Arms" series has proved to be a hit as well. Taking place in WWII, gameplay is more focused on tactics and strategy rather than the shooty-pew-pew style of similar games set in this period in history.
9. A 2008 Wii hack-and-slash title later ported to the PS3 and 360 mashed with a real-time strategy game by S2 games with heavy similarities to "Defense of the Ancients".

Answer: No More Heroes of Newerth

"No More Heroes" follows Travis Touchdown as he seeks to become the number one ranked assassin in an organisation using his prized beam katana. The game was ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 throughout 2010 and 2011, with a sequel being released in 2010, again for the Wii.

Such was the popularity of the "Warcraft III" mod "Defense of the Ancients" that a wave of similar games were created, in a genre that is now known as the 'DotA genre'. One notable game in this category is "Heroes of Newerth". "HoN", as it is affectionately known, is an action real-time strategy game based around two teams vying to destroy a central building in the opposition's base.
10. Kirby's "8 games in one" venture on the SNES (I need the American name for this one) mashed with the series famous for telling players to "do a barrel roll!".

Answer: Kirby Super Star Fox

"Kirby Super Star" (or "Kirby's Fun Pak", as it is known in Europe) features eight games in the one SNES cartridge. Most of these games are platforming-based, although there are a couple that are more appropriately described as mini-games. It was released in NTSC regions in 1996, and PAL regions in 1997. The game has also been made available on the Wii's Virtual Console.

The "Star Fox" series has long been one of Nintendo's flagship series, starting out in 1993 for the SNES, and having iterations on the Nintendo 64, GameCube, DS, and an enhanced remake of the 64 title on the 3DS. A range of developers have contributed to the series, including Rare and Namco.
