It's just you and the track in this mode with no computer controlled opponents to get in your way. It is just you racing against the clock. Even then, you can still get 2nd or 3rd place! I always thought it was fun to knock the other riders off their bikes but sometimes, they just got in my way.

When the race started, the green racer was on top and the two purple twins were in the middle. I never understood why Nintendo didn't color coordinate better. However I always aimed for the green racer because he was the odd one out. He must not have been that good though because there was never a green rider standing on the victory platform after the race.

In case you forgot, the red racer was the one you controlled.

That's right, if you just sit there, racers will constantly pass you by until you move. Conversely, no matter how many racers you pass, there is a seemingly unlimited number of opponents in front of you. Also, there is never more than one green or two purple opponents on the screen at one time.

The only question I have is how they got there if they didn't start the race with me? Hmmm, I suspect some shady business going on here.

Be careful, the computers could take you out just as easily using the same method. While changing lanes directly into the side of a computer will knock him down, it will also send you tumbling. That tactic was usually reserved for the computer opponents using it on you.

Although he would fall as well, it gave ample time for other CPU drivers to pass you. See, I told you there was some shady business in the game!

The computers go to the bottom and you go to the top. This is why I usually preferred to ride in the upper most lane. Less distance to slide and less chance of hitting a computer's bike right as he was getting up. Even then the top wasn't completely safe. CPU bikes could still come by and knock you down just as you were getting up.

It looks like a bad accident but he's all right folks! Even if you do hit an opponent, he will just slide back a few lanes and continue running toward the bike. No matter how many times you (or your opponents) crash and tumble, you always get right back up and run toward the bike. Speaking of running, did you know that if you repeatedly tap the A button after you crash, you will run back to your bike faster?

I don't know about you but I always seemed to crash and burn right in front of the TV camera! Hey wait a minute, the camera man looks an awful lot like Mario, doesn't he? Chalk up another background Mario appearance. Also there is a guy at the finish line waving a checkered flag but I didn't include him because you only see him once durring the race and he doesn't really react when you pass him.

These pieces were "numbered" A through S so that people could make a track spelling out their names. Just kidding, I don't know why the designers chose letters over numbers. The number of track pieces you could place was limited and depended on which track pieces were chosen. I lost track of how many hours I spent making my own tracks and challenging my brother to beat them. Now it seems kind of mild but back in the day, this was a break from the linear game play found in every other game.

There is one set of jump ramps, I call them the "H jump" because that was the letter used to pick it, which could only be placed in the top two lanes of the track. This jump would send a player soaring higher and farther than any other piece.

October 1985 to be specific. Since that time it has been re-released as it were on numerous other systems including Game Boy and Nintendo 64. Hard to believe that fans like myself have been enjoying this game for over 20 years! Kind of makes me feel old! Thanks for playing!
