Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After seven years, Link returns to the Temple of Time. He had several things with him when he was sealed away, but number of new things come out of nowhere or are given to him. What does he NOT automatically receive WHEN he returns that he didn't have before?

Answer: New weapons

When Link appears in the future, Rauru declares him the Hero of Time and gives him the Medallion of Light. *Link had the Master Sword when he was sealed away, but receives no new weapons.* He has grown to about seventeen years old, and now has bigger clothes and earrings. Also new are the sword's sheath and pants/leggings.

The "pants" could also be called tights, I suppose, but I'm not going there-ever. :P When Link leaves the Temple, Navi tells him that he can't use his old weapons. Deku sticks, slingshot, and boomerang are useless to Adult Link, but bombs and Deku nuts are still available.
2. Link first meets Sheik in the Temple of Time. This character has a very noticeable facial feature. What is unusual about Sheik's face?

Answer: Red eyes

Blue hair? Um, no... Part of Sheik's hat is blue. Sheik's nose and ears are hidden by the disguise, but the eyes are visible and red. You might find them a little disturbing if you look at them for too long. Sheik is a very mysterious character, but you might have enough clues after the Water Temple to figure out the secret. Of course, if you've already played the entire game you don't need hints.
3. After leaving ruined Hyrule Castle Town, Link can visit LonLon Ranch and ride a horse. How many carrots represent the horse's stamina?

Answer: Six

Experts recommend using only the first two carrots, because if you have more carrots, they return faster, and you can use them more often. Use the second carrot whenever it returns, and the rest if necessary. The seven years have been rough for Malon, and Ingo is mistreating the horses. For setting things right, Link gets Epona. Pay to ride, play "Epona's Song," and hop on the mare. From horseback, you can challenge Ingo to a race (you have to jump the two fences in the corral first). If you win, Ingo will bet the horse (Epona) on a rematch. If you win the rematch, he panics. "How did you tame that wild horse!" Answer: "She's grown fond of you, fairy boy!" (said by Malon) Epona really likes Link.

She willingly leaps the wall for him, and he rescues Epona from belonging to Ganondorf.
4. After rescuing Epona, Link can return and play a hurdle race mini-game. When Link beats the course record, what does Malon give him?

Answer: Cow

Because the hurdle race can be difficult to beat, a heart piece would have been nice. Instead, Malon gives Link one of her milk cows, and it then lives in Link's treehouse. O_o Couldn't it live on the front lawn instead? What do the Kokiri think about this? Milk is great, but fairies and potions are more useful by now.

This odd gift might be explained by a couple of gossip stones. One tells you Malon is waiting for her knight to come, and another says that Malon set the course record herself. :) Malon is fond of Link.

She probably gives him Epona to ride into Termina with. Epona is much better than a cow! :)
5. In Kakariko, Link begins a very beneficial trading sequence. What item begins the sequence?

Answer: Cucco's egg

The Anju/chicken lady gives Link a fragile little egg to hatch because she wants to see how well he cares for cuccos. The best way to make a cucco happy is to let it wake a lazy bum. Visit the home of the bearded lady and wake up Talon, for there never was a lazier bum in all Hyrule! You trade the cucco back to her for the blue rooster.
Kakariko has become a refuge for the survivors of Castle Town including the "rich beggar" who will still buy fish! A convenient pit behind the potion shop has fish-bottle them and sell them for 100 rupees each.
6. If Link completes the trading sequence, he gets Biggoron's Sword. What dungeon do you have to clear before you can get the sword?

Answer: No level, just rescue Epona

Previously, I had Fire Temple as the answer. After many comments, I discovered one simple difficulty in getting Biggoron's Sword that can be overlooked. Use Epona to get the broken sword from Gerudo Valley and approach Biggoron. Equip the broken sword to a C button *before* he stands up (otherwise, he might not react).

He will stand up rubbing his eyes and moaning. He'll give you his prescription for eyedrops and the rest is following the directions and racing the clock. Make sure you have that bean plant growing in the mouth of Dodongo's cavern. (If you don't, you CAN still make it-I once ignored the plant I *had* grown and ran the whole way!) Biggoron's Sword is an awesome two-handed weapon that does double damage and is nearly as long as Link is tall. With the double power of the jump attack, it deals four times the damage of an ordinary sword attack! That is why I'm not afraid of redeads anymore. :)
7. When Link enters an area, its title appears on the screen. What is the wording of the windmill's title?

Answer: ?

The "?" is actually the correct choice. If you chose this answer because you didn't know, you're welcome for the freebie! :) Not every building has a title, but game shops usually do. The windmill is connected with Dampe's cave tour which uses the "?" title. I hate Dampe's cave race, and often leave his heart piece to the last minute. I don't like being set on fire or buried alive for some reason. I have little advice to give for this task, because I usually roll like crazy and cut around the rocks and pillars to avoid Dampe's little flares of death.
8. Link learns the Song of Storms in order to enter the well. Who (in game) takes credit for creating the "Song of Storms"?

Answer: This is a trick question

"In game" only means I didn't want the game creator who wrote it. Many games and shows have featured this unique paradox of time travel. The events are linked through time travel so that each learned it from the other, creating an unusual loop. Adult Link gets the song from Guru-guru/organ grinder, who accuses child Link of playing it first. Link has never heard the song before, but he takes it to the past where the organ grinder is working on a song to describe the windmill.

When played with Ocarina of Time, the Song of Storms wreaks havoc on the windmill, and the organ-grinder learns the song.

But wait-if you...and he...then where... I have a headache. (I realize that the organ grinder appears to play the song before Link teaches it to him, but he gives Link the credit for the tune.)
9. No matter how Link enters Lost Woods on the way to the Forest Temple, Mido stops him. What does Mido have to say to Link?

Answer: He is sorry for being mean to Link

Play "Saria's Song" to make him move, and talk to him a few times. He is not so bossy as he once was. "You remind me of him... If you ever see him, tell him...tell him I'm sorry, okay?" Mido was always mean to Link because Link didn't have a fairy. When the Deku Tree died, Mido accused Link of causing its death, and the Kokiri believed him (a few of them will mention it). Now they have changed their minds and hope Link will come back. Link returns to the past before this change of heart, and might not be able to stay in Kokiri Village.

In "Wind Waker", the Kokiri sage hopes to atone for the wrongs of his ancestors. Wow, Mido really did feel sorry.
10. When Link brings medicine for the poacher in Lost Woods, a Kokiri girl takes it away. What monster does the she refer to?

Answer: Stalfos

My siblings and I have dubbed her the "creepy Kokiri girl." She says something like this: "Everyone who gets lost becomes Stalfos; everyone-Stalfos. Does that mean you... hee, hee" Shudder. NO! The woman in Kakariko also referred to this disturbing fact when she gave you the medicine. "It won't work on a monster." Shudder again.
11. The Forest Temple has four Poes as mini-bosses. Which statement about them is FALSE?

Answer: Joelle uses puzzle blocks.

Joelle and Beth play an annoying game of peek-a-boo, hiding in pictures until Link gets too close or in direct view. Amy likes slide puzzles, and she'll even reset the puzzle and give Link more time. (I usually need the extra time.) Meg multiplies herself around Link, and pirouettes once before joining her copies in playing ring around the rosie.

After all four Poes "play" with Link, they open the way to the basement. If you have trouble remembering the Poe sisters, see if this helps you. Meg Multiplies Many times (M's go together) and is purple. Amy looks like "Army" in green; she drills you with her puzzle.

The other two are Joelle and Beth, and they are red and blue. Beth is Blue (B's go together). Joelle is the hard one to remember, so I leave her to last. I hope it helps, but you can always come up with your own. If you don't care, that's fine; it's only another detail.
12. Link descends to the basement of the Forest Temple and finds a fenced platform. When he tries to leave, the gate flies up, and the battle begins. Which of these statements about the battle is FALSE?

Answer: The rider can hit Link no matter where Link stands.

The title is "Phantom Ganon", and the real Ganondorf calls it a waste when you beat it. (Ganondorf is watching you- creepy, right?) If that's not bad enough, there's an illusionary Phantom, a fake of a fake! The first stage of the battle can be wicked if you can't tell which phantom is "real".

In the pictures on the walls, the real one is brighter on one side because light touches his shape, but you don't have much time to see it. If you choose wrong, the Phantom leaps from another frame and zaps you-unless you're standing in the corner! The lightning will miss you. Pick a corner and stand on the little Triforce mark. Don't worry about the pictures behind Link, just aim at the pictures you can see and let the phantom come to you. You can afford to wait! In the second stage of the battle, you practice the honored "Zelda" tradition of batting an extremely dangerous ball of energy around until someone misses. (This tradition is sometimes called tennis.) Z-target Ganon and try sidestepping to change the camera angle and make the timing easier.
13. After Link clears the Forest Temple, he is warped to the foot of the old Deku Tree where he finds the Deku Sprout. What does Link do when he first meets the Sprout?

Answer: Falls down

He listens to the sprout after he picks himself up. When the Deku Sprout bursts out of the ground, it sends Link flying backward in a shower of dirt. Link IS a bit danger-prone... :) The Deku Sprout confirms that Link has never been a Kokiri (so Mido was right in assuming Link wasn't Kokiri, even if completely wrong in his attitude).

While Kokiri remain children forever, Link has grown up because he is a Hylian war orphan that the Deku Tree took in. Link's mother died in a war involving Ganondorf.
14. When adult *Link* visits Goron City, he meets a small, rolling Goron. What is the Goron's name?

Answer: Link

His name will be the same as yours, and I was careful to include *Link's name* in the question. After Link cleared Dodongo's Cavern, he became a Goron national hero. Darunia even named his son after Link! ("What a wild adventure! It will make an incredible story...") Link of the Gorons is really upset because Ganondorf captured the other Gorons.

The easiest way to stop the Goron's rolling (since bombs are hard to time) is to shoot an arrow at a bombflower when the he rolls by it. Talk to him and he will give you the Fire Tunic for free and reveal the secret entrance to the crater.
15. When Link rescues the terrified Gorons from the Fire Temple, they give him hints. What strange name do they use for an ordinary weapon?

Answer: Goron's special crop

Gorons consider bombs and bombflowers their own special crop. The explosive plants only grow on Death Mountain and a few dungeons, usually in dark places. When Link first visited Death Mountain, he met a Goron sitting next to that single bombflower on the edge overlooking Dodongo's Cavern.

He told Link about bombflowers and said he was shading this one because sun would light it. (He didn't give it much shade when lying down though.) Link could also have visited the Goron shop to learn that they were completely out of bombs- their special crop.
16. In the Fire Temple, Link encounters a new and frustrating enemy called a like-like. When a like-like grabs Link and throws him away, what should Link do?

Answer: Destroy it and get his stuff back

Like-likes are the squishy monsters that swallow Link and spit him out after removing his shield and fire/water tunics, earning themselves the title of most aggravating enemy ever. XP (Evil, disgusting monster! Gimme back my stuff!) You should never have to buy a tunic.

When a like-like swallows Link, tap the buttons until it spits him out, then immediately hack into the monster. It leaves behind the shield and tunic. I never wait to see what happens if the like-like has time to digest Link's belongings, and you needn't wait either- just get them back! "Song of the Sun" paralyzes the zombie "redeads", and wallmasters take Link to the beginning of the dungeon.
17. When Link thaws King Zora out of the red ice, the King gives him a gift. What is the gift?

Answer: Tunic

Link does not use scuba gear in this game; he uses a magic blue tunic. (In "Link's Awakening" and the "Oracles," Link uses flippers, and in "Oracle of Ages" he can upgrade to a "mermaid" suit.) The frog is part of the trading sequence for Biggoron's sword and is not a gift to Link. I buy the blue fire in Kakariko so I can thaw King Zora and get Biggoron's sword before I even set foot in the Ice Cavern. Even though buying blue fire might be a waste of money, selling fish makes it easily affordable.
18. Equipped with iron boots and a blue tunic, Link enters the Water Temple. How many water levels are there within the Water Temple?

Answer: Three

There are three water levels, and three "switches" activated by "Zelda's Lullaby." The first switch empties the main room, the second fills it halfway, the third fills it back to normal. This is probably the worst level for getting mixed up. Link always ends up standing in front of a locked door while I flip through the map to figure out where I missed a key. Link must change water levels several times and his boots a few dozen times, especially if he misses something.

Shellblades, tektites, spiky balls, floating platforms, and more add to the insanity. Experts say that this is the most difficult level in the game. No kidding-I'm still waterlogged from the last time I tried it...
19. Ruto makes a surprise appearance in the Water Temple and talks to Link. In Ruto's opinion, is Sheik a 'he' or a 'she'?

Answer: He

Ruto explains that Sheik (referred to as "he" soon after), rescued her from the ice in Zora's Domain. It may also be that Ruto's "he" is meant to be neutral because she really doesn't care. By this point in the conversation the Zora princess has already scolded Link for being a bad fiancé. I love Link's startled reaction to this claim-after all, he was a child a few days ago, and he never made any promises.

After the chat, Ruto somehow manages to get herself lost while swimming upward (I personally don't mind).
20. Link meets the mini-boss of the Water Temple on an illusionary lake. What could Link do that would give Shadow Link an amazing advantage?

Answer: Use Navi's Z-target with a sword

Do Not Z-target with a sword. (I've been told z-target will work with other weapons.) Random swinging will help you more, honest. This might be a simple question for some of you, but you didn't see my first battle with him! There are many other ways to fight Shadow Link, but if Link Z-targets him while using a sword, the shadowy mimic can dodge everything Link throws at him.

It practically lets the enemy Z-target Link! In one stunning move, Shadow Link can leap up, stand ON Link's sword, and strike Link.

The animation does not slow down, so you have to pay attention to catch this startling move.
21. Ruto gives Link a hint in addition to the Medallion. What is the encouragement?

Answer: Zelda is nearby.

Link may be a bit clueless, but he's not an idiot either- after all, he did just figure out the Water Temple! (Did I mention that I'm still soggy?) When he returns to the surface, Link walks past Sheik and watches the lake fill up. Usually he stares at the mysterious character, but he doesn't seem as curious now as he was before.

Sheik watches Link while he watches the water rise. After some monologue, Sheik sneaks up the tree and dives into the water. This is about the only time Link can get through a meeting with Sheik without being blinded! :)
22. Fishing in the future rewards Link with bigger fish and the Gold Scale. How much must the fish weigh, and how far can Link dive with the new scale?

Answer: 15 pounds, 8 counts

The fish must be 15 pounds, and it will look nearly as long as Link is tall when he holds it up. The fisherman says that he hasn't had a customer in seven years, and he's glad to see Link. I rather like the fishing game if Navi leaves the fish alone; I once caught a 21 pounder- "I kid you not!" The Gold scale gives Link eight counts, letting him touch bottom in the Lake Hylia Laboratory to get a heart piece.
23. The man who runs the fishing mini-game refuses to give Link another lure. Is there any way to get a different lure?

Answer: Yes

It's called the sinking lure. When Link puts it down, he loses it; and the owner will label it a cheat, but you still get the prize! My sister and I have found it on separate files, child and adult. If you have not found it and are going to look for it, try the following. Pay to fish and then talk to the owner "about something" or say "let's talk." He will refuse to give Link a lure. Walk away and mount the log that arches out of the water, walking all the way up to the pointed branch. If you find the lure, the discovery music will play. **Sometimes you will not find it,** but try anyway. (FunTrivia member Cadrian adds that it may also be hidden in the grass.) After you get a prize winning fish, you might also talk the owner into giving the lure to you if you haven't found it. Use the sinking lure to catch big fish from the deep end, but remember the owner thinks it's a cheat (if you haven't won the prize yet) and you will lose the lure. I have made catches of 11 and 21 pounds without the sinking lure, but it allowed KTJ to haul in a 20-pound lunker very easily.
24. A strange looking man living just within the gate of Castle Town buys Poes. What does the Poe Merchant NOT give Link for the Big Poes?

Answer: Heart Piece

There are no heart pieces in the Poe business. You get paid for each Poe, and also get points for Big Poes. When you have a thousand points, you get a bottle.
The Poe Merchant is what is left of the guard: he had taken an eerie interest in ghosts just before Link left. If you waste enough time here, you will hear a loud clunk. The merchant is not trying to hit Link with that staff; he's keeping the ghosts from drifting away. They float in and out of their cages until it seems they are about to run away- CLUNK!
25. Link can hunt down ten Big Poes that haunt different locations of Hyrule Field. How many times must he shoot a Big Poe to bring it down?

Answer: Two

The Big Poe side-quest requires Epona (who doesn't like it when Link shoots between her ears). Because a few of the Big Poes appear near walls and quickly fade into the stone, they can be very hard to catch. The two near Gerudo Valley are the hardest ones for me, driving me crazy each time I do this side quest. Try to approach them at an angle that "spooks" them away from the wall when they appear. If any Big Poe heads toward a wall, turn Epona that way and it'll drift the other direction in response. Believe it or not, it is possible to chase one all the way across Hyrule field. I know...I've done it! O_O My sister laughed at me the whole time. Take care now, and don't mess with that Peahat-now you've done it... Run! Before the spores get you!
