Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Deku Tree sends Navi to get the boy without a fairy. On her short trip, what does Navi bounce off?

Answer: Fence

Navi does help, even if she nags. There are two reasons I can put up with her: z-target and this Navi-cam ride. She lives with the Deku Tree and acts as his messenger, because he is a tree and rather...stationary. She returns to live with the Deku Sprout, but that's much later. All Kokiri have a fairy, and one of the magical things about them is you see the fairy long before you see the Kokiri.
2. Navi wakes Link, and they depart from his house on their adventure. If you examine Link's tree house, you will notice a doodle. What does it depict?

Answer: Link and a monster

I love this detail! It depicts a small character with sword and shield standing against a monster under a sun. It reminds me of Ganon at the end, especially because Link is a hero, not an artist. You can go see for yourself. Everyone says that Zelda has visions! Link has a nightmare of the future, and doodles future battles. Hero of Time! :D
3. The Deku Tree has called Link to remove the curse. During one of the Deku Tree's speeches, Link does something that you glimpse as the speech ends. What does he do?

Answer: He sits down.

He sits down to listen to the story and you see him getting up as the Tree concludes. He frequently yawns and stretches, but not at this time. After the opening sequence, Link does not sleep unless you count the time Bongo-Bongo knocked him out. In "Wind Waker," Link will turn his head to watch the fairies in the fairy fountains. Here he mostly ignores her (as I suppose we all do).
4. In the Hyrule Castle Town, a little girl chases a cucco. What color is her dress, and can Link catch that cucco?

Answer: Yellow, no

The girl is wearing a yellow dress with a white apron and bonnet, and there is NO way to catch that cucco! My cousin chased it for a couple of hours once and failed. I discovered that if you wear a mask (I noticed with the bunny hood) the little girl stops running and will talk to you.

The cucco bounces away and calms down. If the mask is still on, Link can z-target the cucco, but he will not pick it up. When the mask comes off, the little girl goes after the poor cucco again.
5. In front of the castle, Link talks to Malon about her father and then dodges the guards to find Zelda. When will the guard out front accept a bribe?

Answer: From the second time you visit the castle area until after Jabu-Jabu is cleared.

After Link's first visit, the guard at the front gate will take a bribe if Link wants to pass through the outer gate (you still have to sneak past the other guards). After Zelda has left, the guard refuses to let Link through the gate. In this general area, you will also find the second Great Fairy Fountain (shudder). Because this creepy nut case grants Din's Fire, Link must endure the visit with her once.

It would make a good quiz question to ask which fairy she claims to be...but I never pay close attention to her anyway!
6. Link sneaks into Zelda's garden. Which window has pictures of other Nintendo characters?(You are facing Zelda from the entrance)

Answer: Right

A few "Legend of Zelda" games that include Mario characters are "Link to the Past," "Link's Awakening," "Ocarina of Time," and "Majora's Mask." Slingshot Mario and a rupee pops out; slingshot the left window and someone pitches a bomb at Link.
Link meets Zelda, and then he sees Ganondorf standing on the red carpet. :( This just might be the essential problem to "Legend of Zelda" history. Zelda greets Link, and the King greets Ganondorf. The King of Evil freely enters the court and walks the red carpet; the Hero of Time dodges guards and crawls in through the gutter.
7. After Zelda gives Link a letter of introduction, Impa escorts him out of the castle and teaches him his first song - "Zelda's Lullaby." What does Impa teach him with?

Answer: Whistle

She puts her fingers to her mouth and whistles the tune for him. Aw, that's cute-the first song he ever learns is "Zelda's Lullaby." A nice sweet title for it, considering the other title is "The Song of the Royal Family."
Music plays an important role in "Legend of Zelda" games. Not only is it inspiring, but it also sticks in your head, especially if you spend much time in the same place. (Getting lost in the Lost Woods fixed "Saria's Song" in my brain forever!) After learning "Zelda's Lullaby," Link can also learn "Epona's Song," "Sun's Song," and "Saria's Song." Each has a special effect.
8. Once Talon's awakened, Malon is at home and will teach Link a pretty song her mother taught her. If Link stands still after playing the song, what does Epona do?

Answer: She pushes him a few paces

She really likes Link. Link likes Epona. We all like Epona!
If Link stands still, Epona will push him until he hits the fence or wall. (This works best if Link takes one step toward the approaching filly) Malon is impressed. "She's grown fond of you, fairy boy!" No kidding...and please don't call him fairy boy!
9. Link gets a bottle full of milk at the ranch. "Milk: does a body good." How many hearts can a bottle of milk fill?

Answer: 10

A *bottle* of milk has two drinks in it, and each fills 5 hearts. "Got Milk?" Link does! This is a perfect promotion if I have ever seen one, BUT I respect Link (and Nintendo) for not selling out such a respected game. In-game promotion of milk will have to do. I'm so proud.
Until Link has nine or ten hearts, milk will be more useful than a fairy in a bottle. One fairy will fill up all of his hearts once, but milk will fill up five hearts twice. If you and Link are facing Barinade with less then ten hearts, you will probably need a refill. (If not then congrats, game pro!)
10. What does Talon initially offer Link as prize for winning his cucco game?

Answer: Malon

He initially offers a chance to marry Malon. Not a bad choice compared to Ruto (!), but Link is on this adventure for Zelda. Talon says that he's just joking and gives Link a bottle of milk, promising cheap refills. Playing "Epona's Song" for the cows is cheaper, of course. Link is given the horse later, when he returns from the future. Before you correct me, how do you suppose young Link rides off into "Majora's Mask" with Epona? He wouldn't steal it from Malon! :) And remember, Malon is also fond of the fairy boy.
11. The guard at Kakariko's front gate has a strange job. What does he do besides guard the town?

Answer: He tells time.

He tells time. This is convenient if you're trying to meet Dampe in time for his tour. Run in and out of town and check with the guard until he gives you a time matching Dampe's hours. Time does not move in the town, so don't waste your time there--switch that, waste your time outside the town! :) The guard at the Death Mountain gate laughs at Link and Zelda's "game" but advertises a shield from a shop in Hyrule Castle town.

His recommendation *does* get Link a discount. (You can get a shield free in the graveyard if you're willing to fight a redead for it.) Get the last laugh on the guard by giving him the "Keaton" (yellow fox) mask.

He wears it forever. Who's playing kid's games now?
12. After talking to the Death Mountain guard, Link can get the bunny hood. In "Ocarina of Time," what is the hood's special effect?

Answer: Traveling safely at night

Running faster and jumping further are effects that the bunny hood has in "Majora's Mask," not in "Ocarina of Time." If Link is running and you switch the hood on and off, his speed does not change. Link sells the hood for an amazing 500 rupees. The bunny hood scares or amuses people, but does not depress them.

The only real special effect the bunny hood has in "Ocarina of Time" is safe night travel for child Link. When Link is wearing the bunny hood, no Stalchilds will appear to attack him. Have you never noticed? Put it on, use "Sun's Song" to make it night, run around, and then take the hood off. Ack! Zombies! KTJ discovered this for me.
13. Link meets Darunia, but the Goron is in no mood to talk to a boy. Ah, the power of music. Which of these is something he DOES say about "Saria's Song"?

Answer: "What a hot beat!"

After Darunia's rudeness, his dance is hilarious. A useful shortcut connects Goron City and Lost Woods, blocked by boulders and bombflowers - convenient combination. Grab a stick, light the bombs, and run. The Goron sitting by the shortcut tells you that they all love the music from the tunnel. No wonder Darunia enjoys it so much, but how exactly does an ocarina have a beat? Any great song is likely to have a hot beat if a Goron likes it.

In "Majora's Mask" we learn a Goron's favorite instrument is the drum, and hot is their favorite temperature.
14. Link heroically defeats Dodongo's Cavern and Darunia comes to congratulate him. What does Link do while Darunia is speaking?

Answer: He lies flat on the ground.

When Darunia drops down to thank Link, he knocks Link over. Once Link stands up and turns around, Darunia thumps our hero on the shoulder. Link goes down and stays down for the entire conversation, and only gets up in time to receive the Goron's Spiritual Stone.

He really does spend the entire speech on the ground, because you see him standing up into the frame as Darunia concludes. Is that any way to treat the kid who just did something great for you?
15. How exactly does Link respond when the Gorons offer him a big Goron hug?

Answer: He runs and screams.

Link runs and cries out. Apparently, Link has had enough Goron brother-bonding already, after eating dirt during Darunia's speech. Darunia calls the others to see off their brother. Three of them drop down and trudge toward Link. "You did great! How's about a big Goron hug?" He turns away from them all and runs toward Kakariko, but another Goron drops down in front of him.

He falls down again, gets up and runs up the slope towards Goron City. This is a great time to go see the second Great Fairy (shudder).
16. The owl always offers child Link a ride down from Death Mountain's peak. What item can child Link receive only at the end of this ride?

Answer: Heart piece

The heart piece is in the cow's stall in Impa's house. That's interesting, a cow in the house...What was I saying? Oh! The owl sets Link down on top of the house. Link can drop onto the ledge and walk inside. This is child Link's only chance at this heart piece, but adult Link can use the hookshot. Before you ride down, get the heart piece and skulltula in the crater.

The skulltula is in the crate, and the heart piece is in the crater wall. Walk slowly over the edge of the wall, or instead of climbing down Link will jump (not good!). If you have trouble getting to the heart piece in the time limit, bomb the rock on the ledge. Hopping into the underground cave resets your timer. Also, because you get four seconds for each heart you already have, you can get more hearts and have more time to work with. Lastly, if you don't want to climb back up, go ahead and hop in the lava. Sounds crazy, but it resets you to the last door you entered. Or you can get the heart piece much later if you really don't care. :)
17. Although rolling will save Link from some falls, falling from greater heights will hurt him. What place has the highest height Link can jump from and not be hurt?

Answer: Gerudo Valley

In Gerudo Valley, Link can leap from the canyon wall and dive into the river in the canyon floor, sustaining no damage whatsoever. This, by far, is higher than any other jump he can make. (He has good form, too.) Unfortunately, if you jump carelessly off the edge, Link might dive onto the shelf below where the cow and Gerudo guard are standing. Ouch... KTJ takes credit for this act of recklessness. Even stranger, you might jump from the ledge and crash on the bridge (my mistake)!
18. Link finds Ruto's message in a bottle and then finds her inside Jabu-Jabu. She demands to be carried. What does Ruto do if Link is carrying her and stops to think (stands still)?

Answer: She loses her balance.

Ruto isn't very polite, but she doesn't slap Link either. If you stop and just let the game sit, she flails her arms and legs as though she is about to fall but regains her balance.
When Link leaves her behind, or drops her somewhere, she lectures him about being polite and demands to be carried again. Link needs her to sit on a couple of switches requiring extra weight to activate and constant pressure to hold. Link later uses a box in her place... Perhaps it does a better job.
19. Link defeats Barinade, the source of Jabu-Jabu's troubles, and leaves the fish. Ruto meets him in the warp circle and tries to be too...friendly. What does Link do?

Answer: He gasps and falls backwards.

"Whah?" Splash! There's nowhere to run, and he doesn't dive on purpose. He falls off the log backwards. Ruto is aggressive. She is the only child Zora you meet, and she is also the princess: she expects to get her way. Link "doesn't know what she meant by her most precious possession," but Ruto takes this as an engagement. This smells...fishy.
20. Just as Link returns to the castle, Zelda and Impa flee; and Link meets Ganondorf face to face for the very first time. What is the color of Ganandorf's horse?

Answer: Black

Probably not the hardest question I've asked. Ganondorf and Phantom Ganondorf ride a black horse. You can also see this detail if you watch the title screen for a bit.
Ganondorf asks Link which way Zelda went, and Link answers by drawing his sword and shield. (If you have the Hylian shield equipped, he moves to pull it, but it won't happen because he's not strong enough to use it.) From the very first, Link is willing to take Ganondorf on! The Gerudo King doesn't take Link seriously (he never does) and rides off. Unfortunately, he IS clever enough to return. Smart bad guys are the worst!
21. After Ganondorf rides off, Link can dive for the Ocarina of Time. What will Saria say if Link plays her song with it?

Answer: "Have you been practicing?"

She can tell that something is different, but she can't pin it down. The magic instrument must have a much nicer sound to it, because she assumes Link has been practicing. The "Can you hear me now?" joke was suggested by another "Zelda" fan.
If you play Saria's Song and choose not to talk to Saria, Navi will ask if you want to talk to her instead. This option lets you hear Navi's reminder when you want to hear it instead of when she feels like nagging.
22. For Link to win a heart piece in the fishing mini-game, he must catch a "lunker." How many pounds does the fish have to weigh?

Answer: 9

You know it's big enough if it's as big as he is! When you're fishing, Navi annoys more than she helps because she targets most of the little fish on the edges. The big fish is usually under the logs, but you might find one on the edge of the deep end that will take a bite. My record with child Link was 11 lbs. - no tricks or cheats.
23. How many notes does the scarecrow Pierre limit his song to?

Answer: trick question!

This is the trick question. Sorry, I know it's pretty evil, but read on. It is not Pierre who records and limits your song, but his buddy, Bonooru, who remains planted firmly by Lake Hylia. He won't let you record more than eight notes, and in the future he tells you to look up Pierre. Pierre will also dance to the music, but he does not record the song, and is not present in the future when you replay the song for the other. The only indication of Pierre's location is the way Navi takes off and turns green over a certain place-even then it might be difficult to draw him out. Pierre offers some shortcuts, and is the only way to get some skulltulas.
24. Which of these is the fastest way to get rupees as child Link?

Answer: By selling fish

The excited woman who appears to be begging in Castle Town is actually rich, hence she was chosen to be the banker in "Majora's Mask." She will immediately give you 100 rupees for any fish in a bottle (50 for bugs). "Sell me something with C." Conveniently, there is a "bombable" rock right outside the town gate with a cave and fish under it. Hop in and out, catch as many fish as you have bottles, and you have rupees for any mini-game you just cannot seem to get right.
25. What happens when Link pulls the Master Sword in the Temple of Time?

Answer: All of these

Ganondorf follows Link, mocks the poor boy, and tries to get the Triforce. Link wakes up seven years in the future. He was able to draw the Master Sword, which automatically makes him the Hero of Time. The goddesses sealed Link away until he was old enough to take on the responsibility of defeating Ganondorf. (If they hadn't, Link would have gone anyway! Bring it on, Ganon!) The Triforce broke under Ganondorf's touch, and he kept only Power. Link accepts the responsibility to banish Ganondorf and save Zelda and Hyrule. (I'm still wondering... What happened to King Hyrule?) If you liked the quiz, or would like to share more information, write me and let me know. Have a great ride and watch out for those big poes!
