Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Located above a huge lava field is what town in the "Dragon Warrior I"?

Answer: Mercado

A few changes were made for this GBC version of their NES game. One was to change the town name of Cantlin in the NES version to Mercado for the GBC version "Dragon Warrior I." The word Mercado usually refers to a market, and this town has plenty of markets.
2. There are three graves in the east of Mercado and the caretaker informs you of how they died. What does the caretaker say is the reason for these deaths?

Answer: Killed by monsters

The caretaker asked the hero to, "Pray for the souls of the three, they were killed by monsters." If they were killed by the monsters surrounding Mercado then they battled druinlords, werewolves, starwyverns, shadow knights and green dragons.
3. You have finally arrived at Mercado and a huge monster blocks your entry. How do you get rid of this behemoth?

Answer: Use the Pixy Flute

The huge monster is the Golem. This monster you will face only once in the game. As big as the Golem is, he just can't help but fall asleep when you play him a lullaby on the Pixy Flute. Zzzzzzzzz... now finish him off with your sword.
4. How many gold pieces must you pay to stay at the Mercado Inn?

Answer: 50

Have you seen these inns? I must say the prices of the other four are far more commensurate with the decor of the places. At 50 gold pieces, the price of the inn in Mercado has to be because of its remoteness. I'm sure few people want to venture into the depths of such monsters as green dragons and starwyvern. Just like all businesses today, they get their money one way or the other. Fifty gold to sleep on a bed under the stars. Oh well, at least you'll awaken totally revived.
5. What is the nickname of Mercado?

Answer: The Fortress City

The town of Mercado has quite a few shops and merchants in them. The town however, has only two people wandering the streets. A sentry on patrol by the Inn and a woman in the southwest, both of them tell you about the name of the city.

Mercado is a city with many natural boundaries. It is surrounded on the west/northwest by water. On the southwest and to the northeast are high mountains. Trees blot every inch immediately surrounding the walled town, except for the opening once protected by the Golem. I've mentioned already the huge Golem you must destroy to enter the city as it fills the gateway. To add to all this you must cross a bridge that takes you directly into a lava field to enter the outskirts of the city. Mercado is indeed a fortress.
6. I bought the D-Scale and the Warp Wing while in Mercado. How many gold pieces did I give the shop owner for my purchases?

Answer: 44

The Dragon Scale, listed as the D-Scale in the GBC version for text purposes, is fabled to have fallen from the body of a dragon long ago. It is said to be a fossil of greenish hue that can fit in the palm of your hand. The D-Scale is also said to have mysterious powers and the scale can increase your defensive power by 5 points. In all shops that sell the D-Scale, it will cost you 20 gold pieces, and you can sell it back for 10.

The warp wing is this game's express ticket back to Tantegel Castle. At 24 gold pieces each, it sure beats walking. Also known as the chimera wing, wyvern wing, or wings, in "Dragon Warrior I" it is simply known as the warp wing. If you decide to sell it you'll be offered half its price.
7. Can you buy Repellent in that quaint little booth in the northwest corner of Mercado?

Answer: No

You can buy repellent from the merchant whose booth is in the same location as the weapons and armor stall in the southeast of town. For the nifty price of just 12 gold pieces you can purchase a bottle of repellent that, when in use, will keep monsters at bay for about 30 seconds.
8. What's hidden in the dresser in the inn?

Answer: DEFSeed

I was nosy and snooped in the drawers. Yes! I found a DEFSeed. With this seed I can increase my GRD(guard) ability. It's only a slight increase of three or four points, but every little bit helps.
9. How many of the three weapons and armor shops in Mercado sell a sword?

Answer: Three

The copper sword can be purchased first in Tantegel Town at a price of 180 gold and will sell for 90. Buy it as soon as possible to increase your chances of dying less and leveling up faster. It's much more effective than the club and durable until the Steel Sword. The copper sword will add 10 points to your attack.

The steel sword will divest you of 1,500 gold pieces with a return of 750 if you sell it. You won't get the chance to grab this baby until you reach the town of Rimuldar. Once you equip the steel sword your attack will shoot up by 20 points.

The flame sword will cost you a pretty penny indeed. It will cost you 9800 pieces of gold if you want to battle the tougher monsters with this second best sword in the game. If you get tired of it, you can sell it back and receive exactly half its purchase price. The flame sword once equipped will add 28 points to your attack.
10. Which shop is in the extreme northwest corner of Mercado?

Answer: Storage

A storage service! What a great idea! If you recall in the original "Dragon Warrior" you had 10 spaces for items, excluding weapons and armor. However, in "Dragon Warrior I" weapons, armor and items like the D-Scale, torch and herbs all go into the same cache and it holds only 10 items. You can store items that you may not want to dump or sell at the storage service.
11. How many hit points will it cost you to speak to the elder directly due south in Mercado?

Answer: 56

This fiendish barrier took away 15 points per step in NES's "Dragon Warrior." The game makers made "Dragon Warrior I" a lot more player friendly. The elder is somewhat protected by the same green striped floor barrier however, it now takes away only 7 hit points per step.

Before you send me a correction note, I didn't ask how many HPs to speak with him and leave. I asked about speaking with him. You don't have to go back through the green striped floor to leave. You could leave by simply using the return spell or warp wing.
12. Someone in Mercado has a tale to tell about his grandfather. What is his grandfather's name?

Answer: Yukinov

The grandson tells a story about how his family moved to Mercado because of the monsters. However, before leaving his grandpa buried a treasure somewhere on the eastern side of the town.
13. The grandson in Mercado tells you of the treasure his grandfather hid. What was the treasure hidden by his grandfather?

Answer: Loto's Armor

Yukinov came into possession of Loto's sword because it was passed around from person to person. When the monsters began to raze the town of Domdora, Yukinov pulled up stakes and moved his family east to what is now the Fortress City of Mercado, leaving a lucrative business behind.
14. Unscramble "MUTTY NICS" to find the name of an item I found in a drawer in the southeast end of town.

Answer: MysticNut

If you happen to find a mystic nut, you can use it and add 3 to 5 MP (magic points) to your score. Of course, you can also sell it and add 100 gold pieces to your cache. I'd rather have the MPs.
15. What did Yukinov bury his treasure under?

Answer: A tree

When you're strong enough you can get Loto's Armor; it's in the town of Domdora under a tree. When you go after it be prepared to fight a tough battle. The armor is buried and you'll have to battle something called a mad knight to win the pleasure of finding the armor. That's right! After battling this awesome monster and winning, you'll have to look for the armor. Well, nothing is free anymore!
