Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known as "Cheatsy", rumoured to be named after U2's drummer.

Answer: Larry Koopa

Larry is the youngest of the Koopalings and is usually up to some form of mischief. He will try to win by any means, be they fair or foul, hence the nickname "Cheatsy". He enjoys sports and can be spotted playing fireball tennis in "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga".

There was an article written about his name in the British Official Nintendo magazine that indicated the inspiration was the talk show host Larry King whilst another indicated that it remained within the musical theme of the other Kooplalings and that it stemmed from Larry Mullen Jr., the drummer for U2.

Then again there was an interview with a Nintendo employee on the website Kotaku that indicated that "he just looked like a Larry".
2. This "ring-in" is the mayor's secretary from "Animal Crossing".

Answer: Isabelle

Isabelle (yes I know, "ring-in" as a clue was a terrible pun) is a dog character who looks like a Shih tzu. That's probably because she is a Shih tzu. She made her first appearance in the Nintendo 3DS game "Animal Crossing: A New Leaf". "Mario Kart 8" marks the first time that she appears anywhere as a playable character.

In this series she is one of the heavier lightweights and her signature vehicle is the City Tripper.
3. "Big Mouth" in the cartoons he's named after Sean Downey's stage name.

Answer: Morton Koopa Jr.

Morton is the largest of the Koopalings and, in accordance with his size, is very strong. He also talks a lot (hence "Big Mouth") and he can be a bit of a grouch if things don't go his way. He is the only one of the Koopalings with brown skin and he carries about a ruby coloured wand. His namesake, Sean Downey, is best known by the stage name Morton Downey Jr.
4. The only female Koopaling; wields a purple wand.

Answer: Wendy O. Koopa

Wendy's predominant colour is pink (surprise) and she wields a mean purple wand. This little lady is no lady at all. She's very much a tomboy that's been pampered too much but don't get on her wrong side, she has a temper that rivals Donald Duck and the Hulk. Her namesake is Wendy O. Williams, the former lead singer of the punk rock band The Plasmatics.
5. This character is really Mario wearing a special suit.

Answer: Tanooki

Tanooki showed his face for the first time in "Super Mario Bros. 3". To tell the truth he's really Mario in another guise. Just like Mario can turn into Raccoon Mario with the help of the Silver Leaf, Mario takes that a step further and turns into Tanooki with the aid of a special suit.

This suit has the power to turn him into an invulnerable statue. In "Mario Kart 8" Mario and Tanooki appear as separate characters. Tanooki, whose signature vehicle is, naturally, the Tanooki Kart, is a middleweight.

However, he has greater acceleration in his vehicle to Mario because of the added weight of his special suit.
6. Named after the Big O, also known as "Bully".

Answer: Roy Koopa

The Big O is Roy Orbison of "Pretty Woman" (the song, not the movie) fame. Just like the Big O Roy is constantly wearing sunglasses. Here's the thing, Roy's sunglasses are pink. Yes, you heard right, big, bad, mean and tough Roy sports a pair of pink sunglasses. Sorry Roy but after that the black wand you hold just doesn't cut it. Roy however, is comfortable with the image.

He's fairly laid back and he talks in a cool, calm and collected manner.
7. Hyperactive yellow wand wielder; named after The Stooges' frontman.

Answer: Iggy Koopa

Named after Iggy Pop he is the twin brother of Lemmy Koopa. Iggy can be childish, at times a little demented and he's totally unpredictable. In the Nintendo "Adventure" books he is known as a bit of an inventor but most will tell you "he's a bit out there, man".
8. Named after Motorhead's founder; uses a green wand.

Answer: Lemmy Koopa

Lemmy is a tiny fellow. He's not necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed and there's a naïve quality about him. He enjoys a bit of tomfoolery but he will get serious when the need arises.
9. You may know me from "The Legend of Zelda" series.

Answer: Link

Alongside Mario Link is one of Nintendo's most popular video game characters and, as a result, he tends to crossover and make appearances in a range of the Mario series' games. In "Mario Kart 8" he is the first non-Mario series character to appear in "Mario Kart". Because of his height he slots into the heavyweights in the race and his bike has been modelled on a combination of his Master Sword and his horse Epona.

As an acknowledgement to his home kingdom there is a Hyrule Circuit built into the Triforce Cup events.
10. "Kooky" was named after a classical composer.

Answer: Ludwig Von Koopa

Ludwig is the eldest of the Koopalings and claims to be the most intelligent. I reckon that Iggy is likely to argue the toss over that one though. Despite being a composer like his namesake (Beethoven) and a little bit of a cultured fellow Ludwig also has the capacity to be cruel. I'd keep an eye on him.
