Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For what console was "Mario Kart 64" originally released in 1996 and then later made available on the Wii Virtual Console?

Answer: Nintendo 64

"Mario Kart 64" was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 game console. The game consisted of four different game modes: Time Trial, Vs., Battle, and Grand Prix. The game has since been made available for the Wii Virtual Console along with several other titles in the "Mario Kart" series.
2. Which of these characters did NOT appear in all of the first seven games in the "Mario Kart" series?

Answer: Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was actually left out of the first game in the series ("Super Mario Kart"), but did make an appearance in the following six games. The Donkey Kong character was originally created as a opponent of Mario in the original "Donkey Kong" game. Later, Nintendo would go on to create a series in which Donkey Kong became the hero.
3. How many characters made an appearance in all of the first seven games in the "Mario Kart" series?

Answer: Six

Yoshi, Toad, Princess Peach, Mario, Bowser and Luigi appear in all seven of the games. Donkey Kong and Wario appear in six of the seven games. Both were left out of the initial game in the series.
4. In "Mario Kart 64", the top three finishers in a Grand Prix competition all receive trophies and appear on the podium. What happens to the fourth place finisher?

Answer: They are shown driving down the path away from the castle and are blown up

The fourth place player is shown driving down a yellow pathway and apparently his a bomb, while the top three finishers enter the winners circle to receive their trophies. The last place finisher in each race is also blown up once the seventh place racer crosses the finish line.
5. In "Mario Kart 64" battle mode, players compete to be the last player standing. Each time a player his hit with a weapon they lose one of which of these?

Answer: Balloon

Each time a player is successfully hit with an object, for example: shell, banana, or they fall off of an area that causes them to flip over/be retrieved from outside the playable area, they lose a balloon. Characters like Yoshi and Toad lose a balloon just from running head first into one of the heavier characters like Donkey Kong or Bowser.
6. A total number of how many human players could play Grand Prix at any one time in "Mario Kart 64"?

Answer: Two

Although four players could play "Mario Kart 64", the Grand Prix mode was only designed for two human players. Groups of three or more were limited to VS. and Battle modes only.
7. Which of these was not one of the battle stages in "Mario Kart 64"?

Answer: All of the them were battle stages

There were four Battle stages in "Mario Kart 64". The battle stages were designed for combat; no races took place on any of the four stages. Each stage contained item boxes scattered throughout for players to pick up items for both attack and defense against other players.
8. What did the Thunderbolt item do when used in "Mario Kart 64"?

Answer: made all the opponents smaller and slower

The Thunderbolt, sometimes referred to as the lightning bolt, was usually acquired by the last place or near-last place player. It enabled the player using the item to get back into the race. Players who had gone off the course and being placed back on track when the item is used are not effected. Also, once players have been squished, by making contact with another player while shrunken, they are returned to normal size after a brief delay.
9. Which of these was not part of the Flower Cup Grand Prix in "Mario Kart 64"?

Answer: Kalimari Desert

Kalimari Desert is part of the Mushroom Cup. There were four different Grand Prix events: Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup and Special Cup. Each cup increased in difficulty with Mushroom being the easiest and Special being the most challenging.
10. When selecting a Grand Prix cup in "Mario Kart 64" and the difficulty level players may choose from 50cc, 100cc and 150cc, which determines the difficulty based on engine size (150cc is the hardest). Once a gold trophy has been earned for each of the four Grand Prix Cup events, there is a special difficulty that becomes playable. What is so special about it?

Answer: Tracks are all reversed

When playing the special difficulty all of the tracks are reversed. This makes for some tricky navigation. For example, on Toad's Turnpike, all the cars are now coming at you as if you're driving on the wrong side of the road.
