Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bahamut and Tiamat are both dragons that appear throughout the series. Though they sound similar in origin, they are not. Tiamat came from which of these mythologies?

Answer: Assyrian

In Assyrian lore, Tiamat was the female dragon of Chaos. She first appeared as a random boss battle in the first "Final Fantasy", and has been around ever since.
2. This estranged family in "Final Fantasy VIII" does have one thing linking them together; Squall, Laguna and Raine are all different types of what element?

Answer: Water

A squall is another term used for a storm, especially at sea. Laguna literally translates to lagoon in Spanish, and Raine is... well, rain.
3. This mountain hamlet town from "Final Fantasy VII" was burnt to ashes by Sephiroth in an insane rage. In Norse mythology the town's name means 'frozen hell'. What is the town's name?

Answer: Nibelheim

Nibelheim was Cloud and Tifa's home village, surrounded by frigid mountains and set ablaze by Sephiroth (frozen Hell). It also translates to "Home of the Clouds" in Norse.
4. Ramuh has always been the man we turn to when someone needs a zap. He controls lightning, and is also been referred to as Rama in what religion?

Answer: Hinduism

In Hinudu stories, Ramuh was an incarnation known for his chivalry. This is apparent in "Final Fantasy IX" when he kindly helps a scared and alone Dagger regain her sense of purpose by telling her a story (of Josef from "Final Fantasy II", by the way) in Pinnacle Rocks.
5. Sephiroth's Masamune was named after an actual living person.

Answer: True

Masamune was the name of a legendary sword smith in Japan. He specialized in katanas.
6. Terra is a recurrent name for both characters and places in "Final Fantasy". In Latin it means 'Earth'. It was the main heroine's name in "Final Fantasy VI", but what character from "Final Fantasy IX" tried to destroy the world he came from also called Terra?

Answer: Kuja

Kuja in Hinduism is a god, and his name means 'son of the earth'. He is also known as Mars and said to resemble a red peacock creature, in the game Trance Kuja turns red head to toe and sports feather like hair.
7. Aerith/Aeris is seen in more than one language and folklore. In Latin, aeris literally translates as "air; atmosphere; cloud; aether". But there is yet another tie between Aerith and Cloud's names as well. Exact in pronunciation, Eris is a goddess of discord in what mythology?

Answer: Greek

In Greek myth, Eris is the goddess of Discord, Disharmony and Strife! In Japanese, Aerith also means earth, or protector of earth.
8. There are two ladies in the series that share the surname Crescent, albeit one's origin is much more cheerful than the other. In "Final Fantasy IX" Freya Crescent (Freya being the Norse goddess of Love) was a fierce dragoon. Who was the other woman to bear the name Crescent in a previous installment of the game series?

Answer: Lucrecia

There is a poem by Shakespeare called "The Rape of Lucrece", this is a strong allusion to the way Lucrecia conceives her child, Sephiroth in "Final Fantasy VII" (though it's never said Hojo forced Lucrecia in the game, but what they did to their child was inhumane...).

In both their cases, the women were so ashamed and appalled that they vanished into obscurity, and either died (in the poem Lucrece committed suicide) or hid in shame (as Lucrecia did until Vincent found her).
9. Even Catholicism has made small cameos in "Final Fantasy". Ark (which looked like a ship) was used By Dagger as an Eidolon in "Final Fantasy IX". And again Arks reappeared in "Final Fantasy XIII", but what was their purpose?

Answer: Used as training grounds in Gran Pulse

In the Bible it was always referred to as Noah's Ark, a large ship to escape the 40 day flood. In "Final Fantasy XIII" however, Fal'Cie contained monsters within Arks to train the l'Cie to fight in the War of Transgression.
10. Sephiroth is actually another name for the ten parts that make the Tree Of Life in some religions.

Answer: True

This is found in Kabbalaism and Hebrew Mysticism. Sephiroth is actually plural for the paths taken to perfect one's attributes, ideals and complete understanding of oneself to achieve perfection or godlike status. In "Final Fantasy VII" Sephiroth tried to gain knowledge and divine power, via the Lifestream to become a God.
