Island Closest To Hell may be a good place to encounter Malboros from which you get Malboro Tentacles requied for this quest, but it is not necessary. Malboros can be encountered in few other locations e.g. Island Closest to Heaven or near Esthar. Malboro Tentacles can also be refined from Malboro cards (4 cards into 1 tentacle)

You cannot steal Gaea's Ring from him. He drops it after the battle. You can steal 3x Cactus Thorn

If his HP is less than 2% he can escape from battle and be fully healed when you encounter him again.

Even character with a maximum of 9999 HP can be killed instantly (his "10,000 needles" attack deals exactly 10,000 damage)
