Question 1 of 10
1. Mysteriously, this game manual will not tell you how many points you get if you beat the last boss. Here's the quotation.

"Bowser, King of the Koopa: The sorcerer king holding Princess Toadstool captive in the last castle. He comes at you spitting fire. There are several ways to kill him, but you only get points if you use fireballs. (--- pts.)"

What's the game?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Some manuals don't give you much to go on as far as strategies or even information regarding the villains of the game. One such manual only lists the points each boss is worth. Here is the information. "Grim Reaper: 7,000 points; The Count!: 50,000 points". The manual also states Queen Medusa is worth 3,000 points and Frankenstein and Igor are worth 5,000. What's the game? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. So this next game as one of the most infamous stages in all of video gaming: 6-2. I know once I beat it, I have to beat the final boss. The game manual says this about the final boss:

"Guardia de Mieux (Jaquio): He calls himself Jaquio. He is the almighty evil, determined to take over the world. He believes in the legends surrounds the evil temple at the ruins. He has taken over the temple to build an empire of evil."

What's the game?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. This manual doesn't have any information on the villains themselves, but it does have this interesting tidbit of information regarding an item you get if you beat one of the bosses. "Metal Man: The (M) Metal Blade is a gear. Up to three may be thrown in any direction the control pad is pushed. This is probably the best general purpose weapon and the energy lasts a long time." What's the game? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Some games require you to use special items to beat the final boss. This game's manual nicely clues us into the fact without a certain item, there's no way we'll finish the game. Here's the quote:

"Link's no match for Gannon and his might. Whatever attack Link uses, Gannon just repels him. But if Link uses the magical sword and some other object, he'll manage to topple the mighty Gannon."

What's the game?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. According to this game's manual, the boxer Glass Joe has 1 win, 99 losses, and 1 KO. He is from Paris, France, is thirty eight years old, and weighs a measly one hundred ten pounds. What game does this ferocious beast of a man come from? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Not all "villains" are truly villains. Some characters are actually on your side but you still hate anyway. One such game features a dog that jumps into bushes to scare a certain type of animal out of the brush. It is your job to kill these animals. And if you miss, man's best friend, the dog, does something rather annoying. The manual states: "The hound comes out and laughs at you." So much for moral support. What is the game? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. So I fired up the NES the other day and stuck in this cartridge that is remarkably like "Metroid". I get to one of the dungeons, and all of a sudden I encounter a fiendish enemy who turns me into some sort of vegetable. I break out the manual and find this entry:

"Eggplant Wizard: An inhabitant of the fortresses. It places a spell on Pit to turn him into an eggplant. In order to break the spell, Pit must go to the fortress hospital."

I head off to the fortress hospital to get healed.
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Most manuals will tell you the overall plot of the game. This game manual, however, essentially says if you fail, the aliens win and they will take over the entire universe. No pressure or anything, right? Here's the quote:

"You're about to come face to face against Red Falcon, the cruelest life-form
in the galaxy. His ultimate fiendish goal: domination of the entire universe.

Needless to say, playing hero won't be easy. But you have no choice -- you
must be a hero. Because if you fail, life as we know it will cease to exist,
and the vile Red Falcon will rule forever."

What would have been much more helpful than all that undue pressure (after all, back in the 1980s kids were primarily playing video games, not adults) is the famous Konami Code, which gives you thirty lives rather than the three the game starts you out with. What's the game?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The last game manual I found tells us about a mini-boss in the fortress levels of this particular title. Here's what it says:

"Boom Boom: This is the boss that controls the Mini-Fortresses. Boom Boom hurls himself at Mario with his arms swinging. Mario needs to jump on Boom Boom 3 times to defeat him. Be careful though, Boom Boom gets quicker every time he gets jumped on."

What's the game?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
(--- pts.)" What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario Bros.

"Super Mario Bros." is one of the best-selling games of all time. Nintendo released the title in 1985 and packaged the NES with the title.

Answer: Castlevania

The original "Castlevania" came out in 1987. The game is short and brutally difficult. There was an arcade version that doubled the damage you took by enemies, in order to eat as many the gamer's quarters as possible.
3. So this next game as one of the most infamous stages in all of video gaming: 6-2. I know once I beat it, I have to beat the final boss. The game manual says this about the final boss: "Guardia de Mieux (Jaquio): He calls himself Jaquio. He is the almighty evil, determined to take over the world. He believes in the legends surrounds the evil temple at the ruins. He has taken over the temple to build an empire of evil." What's the game?

Answer: Ninja Gaiden

Tecmo released the universally hailed classic platform action game "Ninja Gaiden" in 1987. Unfortunately, the last few stages of the game are nigh on impossible. If you do manage to beat the four levels in Stage Six, you will have to face three bosses. If at any time you die during the boss battle, you go ALL THE WAY BACK TO 6-1. The game's enemies also respawn constantly, creating one of the most difficult games in the entire NES catalog. Here's the epilogue from the manual:

"Epilogue: Cinema action "Ninja Gaiden" is depending on your skills to save the world. Can you do it? It is essential that you succeed! Awaiting you is an ending that you just have to experience for yourself. May the spirit of the Dragon be with you!"

Most people, whether the Spirit of the Dragon is with them or not, will never see the end of this game.

Answer: Mega Man 2

Kenji Inafune, Mega Man's principal designer, assembled a team to design "Mega Man II", the rogue sequel to the original "Mega Man". It was very much a pet project, which Capcom would not give him time for due to the sales of "Mega Man". Inafune and his team developed "Mega Man II" in their free time. It has long been considered one of the best NES titles ever published.
5. Some games require you to use special items to beat the final boss. This game's manual nicely clues us into the fact without a certain item, there's no way we'll finish the game. Here's the quote: "Link's no match for Gannon and his might. Whatever attack Link uses, Gannon just repels him. But if Link uses the magical sword and some other object, he'll manage to topple the mighty Gannon." What's the game?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

This section of the manual alludes to the fact you must have the Silver Arrows, found in Dungeon Nine (the final labyrinth), to bring down "Gannon". Oddly enough, the in-game text and all instances in the manual refer to Ganon as "Gannon". This spelling would be changed in all subsequent titles in the series.
6. According to this game's manual, the boxer Glass Joe has 1 win, 99 losses, and 1 KO. He is from Paris, France, is thirty eight years old, and weighs a measly one hundred ten pounds. What game does this ferocious beast of a man come from?

Answer: Mike Tyson's Punch Out

In 1987 Nintendo published "Mike Tyson's Punch Out". The game was a huge hit. In 1992, Nintendo developed a sequel to the game, but then stepped away from the production as they were not happy with the game play. The title would be released as "Power Punch II" and featured a science fiction setting. Critics and fans alike panned the quasi-sequel.

Answer: Duck Hunt

There were a lot of Nintendo consoles that came packed with "Super Mario Bros." and "Duck Hunt" on the same cartridge. The dog from "Duck Hunt" has become rather notorious in the gaming culture due to his constant laughter when you miss the ducks. More than one gamer wished you could shoot the dog in addition to the ducks. The dog makes a cameo in "Barker Bill's Trick Shooting", and you can shoot him there.

Due to new technology and how the zapper gun works, "Duck Hunt" on an original NES console will not work on some of the newer televisions.
8. So I fired up the NES the other day and stuck in this cartridge that is remarkably like "Metroid". I get to one of the dungeons, and all of a sudden I encounter a fiendish enemy who turns me into some sort of vegetable. I break out the manual and find this entry: "Eggplant Wizard: An inhabitant of the fortresses. It places a spell on Pit to turn him into an eggplant. In order to break the spell, Pit must go to the fortress hospital." I head off to the fortress hospital to get healed.

Answer: Kid Icarus

Still regarded as one of the most annoying video game enemies ever conceived by the human imagination, the Egg Plant Wizard will turn you into a Walking Eggplant. Depending on where you get transformed, you will have some serious hiking and backtracking to get healed. On top of that, as soon as you get back in that same room if you're not careful you'll get hit again. Shigeru Miyamoto said if they did a modern day installment to "Kid Icarus" they'd bring back the Egg Plant Wizard.

Here's what the manual says on the final boss Medusa:

"The big, evil gatekeeper who has occupied the Palace in the Sky. The goddess who was turned into an ugly monster by Palutena, she does all she can to be evil and nasty."
9. Most manuals will tell you the overall plot of the game. This game manual, however, essentially says if you fail, the aliens win and they will take over the entire universe. No pressure or anything, right? Here's the quote: "You're about to come face to face against Red Falcon, the cruelest life-form in the galaxy. His ultimate fiendish goal: domination of the entire universe. Needless to say, playing hero won't be easy. But you have no choice -- you must be a hero. Because if you fail, life as we know it will cease to exist, and the vile Red Falcon will rule forever." What would have been much more helpful than all that undue pressure (after all, back in the 1980s kids were primarily playing video games, not adults) is the famous Konami Code, which gives you thirty lives rather than the three the game starts you out with. What's the game?

Answer: Contra

"Gradius" is the first game to feature the famous Konami code. Almost all games in the "Gradius" series features the code in one way or another. The code also appears in the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" games. In the NES title "Gyruss", the code must be entered in reverse order.
10. The last game manual I found tells us about a mini-boss in the fortress levels of this particular title. Here's what it says: "Boom Boom: This is the boss that controls the Mini-Fortresses. Boom Boom hurls himself at Mario with his arms swinging. Mario needs to jump on Boom Boom 3 times to defeat him. Be careful though, Boom Boom gets quicker every time he gets jumped on." What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario Bros. 3

"Super Mario Bros. 3" is generally regarded as one of the best titles in the NES's deep and varied catalog. Ignoring the weird detour of "Super Mario Bros. 2", "Super Mario Bros. 3" goes back to the basics, and makes everything about the original "Super Mario Bros." bigger, better, and more epic.

There's not a better game to end a quiz about NES titles on.
