Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He must rescue the Star Rod to save the Fountain of Dreams from King Dedede and Nightmare.

Answer: Kirby

"Kirby's Adventure" was released in 1993 for the NES. It followed in its plot the 1992 release of "Kirby's Dream Land" which was released on the Game Boy. In it, the Fountain of Dreams has been corrupted giving everyone a bad night's sleep. King Dedede stole the Star Rod and distributed the pieces in Dream Land, and Kirby, out protagonist, has to retrieve the pieces and restore the fountain.

However, the true nemesis, Nightmare, is revealed and has to be defeated by Kirby.
2. Starting at Tantegel Castle, he must defeat the Dragonlord and rescue Princess Gwaelin, or does he...?

Answer: The descendant of Erdrick

"Dragon Quest" is a role-playing game that was released on the NES in 1986. It tells of the evil Dragonlord who has captured Princess Gwaelin, and your role as the descendant of the ancient hero Erdrick is to defeat the Dragonlord and save the kingdom. The funny thing about the game is that you don't even have to save Princess Gwaelin in order to win the game.
3. She hunts Space Pirates on the planet of Zebes.

Answer: Samus Aran

Samus Aran is one of the best-known female video game heroes. Her story happens in the game of "Metroid" which was released on NES in 1987/1988, and is an action-packed adventure that spawned a series of games, television series, manga, and more. In the original game, Samus has to save the Metroids before the Space Pirates can turn them into weapons, and she goes through the planet Zebus in search of them.

She starts out with very few powers and abilities, but, as the game progresses, she is able to upgrade herself.

The most memorable is her ability to roll in ball form and get through tight spaces.
4. He is Luigi's brother that is tasked with saving Princess Toadstool.

Answer: Mario

"Super Mario Bros." was a very successful game that became the game most identified with the NES. It was released in 1985 (or perhaps very early in 1986) on the gaming system, though I remember it from its 1988 release when it was packaged with "Duck Hunt" in one cartridge. It follows the adventures of Mario (and his brother Luigi, in the two-player mode) as he travels through the Mushroom Kingdom and defeats the forces of Bowser and his Koopas. He has to rescue Princess Toadstool and to pass several levels before he can reach Bowser himself and save her.

The game was innovative in its design because rather than waste valuable disc space on creating a tutorial for the game, level 1-1 has everything that a player needs to know to figure out the mechanics of playing. In it, the player can understand the different abilities that Mario has as he advances through the level and the different power-ups that he can gain.
5. He must overcome the minions of Dr. Wily while trying to save Dr. Light.

Answer: Mega Man

The "Mega Man" franchise was started with the 1987 release of the first in the series. It follows the quest of Mega Man (or Rockman in Japan) as he tries to free Dr. Light from the clutches of the evil Dr. Wily and his six minions, each one with a unique ability. Once Mega Man defeats one of these underbosses, he gains the ability to use a weapon inspired by them. Subsequent underbosses may be more prone to attacks from specific weapons gained making the progress through the game nonlinear and, therefore, up to the player.
6. Along with Nana, he must climb the mountain to get vegetables taken by a condor.

Answer: Popo

Popo and Nana are the characters from the game "Ice Climber" which was released on the NES in 1985. Popo and Nana are parka-wearing mallet-wielding ice climbers who must gather the vegetables (mostly eggplants) from the evil condor. Though players can play Popo and Nana cooperatively, the bonus levels pit them one against the other.

This game enjoyed a resurgence in interest when Popo and Nana were added to "Super Smash Bros." as a playable character.
7. He must infiltrate into Outer Heaven to destroy a weapon of mass destruction and save a Cold War Earth.

Answer: Solid Snake

In a Cold War future, the West realizes that the East is developing a weapon that will be nearly unstoppable, the "Metal Gear", which is also the name of the game. When they lose contact with their agent on the inside, they send in a rookie, Solid Snake, to infiltrate into the lab, Outer Heaven, and destroy the weapon before it can be fully built. With increasing difficulty, Solid Snake realizes that the traps that are laid out for him are far too precise. He is being set up... but by whom?

"Metal Gear" was released on the NES in 1987.
8. He is the hero of Hyrule who has to save Princess Zelda and pieces together the Triforce.

Answer: Link

When "The Legend of Zelda" was released in 1986, nobody really knew what amazing impact it would have on the video gaming world. It was so successful that within a year there was a sequel, and numerous other sequels and remasters over the years. The original game was a two-dimensional adventure where the hero, Link, has to save Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. Link grows in abilities as he acquires items and gains experience, and magical artifacts let him access different screens on the map. While there was a logical progression to the game, it also allowed players to make their own fortune and advance the levels as they saw fit.
9. He must evade four ghosts and eat the dots to save himself.

Answer: Pac-Man

"Pac-Man" was released on the NES in 1984. The hero, Pac-Man, has to go through levels without the four ghosts, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde, get to him first. In order to pass a level, Pac-Man has to eat all of the dots on the level without getting caught by the ghosts.

There are power dots on the board as well that allows Pac-Man to eat the ghosts and sends their eyes back to the middle of the board where they regenerate. "Pac-Man" became a classic and has spawned spin-offs and even a television series.
10. He has to rescue the three sacred treasures of Angel Land to save Palutena.

Answer: Pit

"Kid Icarus" was released on the NES in 1987. Pit, a minor angel, is tasked with saving the Goddess of Light, Palutena, who was imprisoned by the Goddess of Darkness, Medusa. Pit uses his bow and arrow to defeat enemies in order to recover the three sacred treasures, the Mirror Shield, the Light Arrows and the Wings of Pegasus, and to rescue Palutena and restore her.
