Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every successful takeover requires a leader like Bowser to enlist the help of some highly-trained, elite minions. One of Bowser's elite minions has mastered the art of throwing other underlings at Mario as he tries to thwart Bowser's plans. In "Super Mario Bros.", what is the name of the Koopa that rides in a cloud and throws Spinies at Mario?

Answer: Lakitu

Lakitu's shell is green and he wears goggles. In games where he appears as an enemy, you can jump on him to defeat him if you can get close enough. In "Super Mario World" for the Super NES you can ride in his cloud after knocking him out of it. He has appeared in many "Mario Kart" games as a referee and carrying a traffic light, but you can choose him as a driver in "Mario Kart 7" and "Mario Kart 8".
2. Bowser counts on the support of his family and often sends his children to do his dirty work. The Koopalings appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3" as the bosses in each of the first seven lands of the Mushroom World. What do they steal from the rulers in each land when they take over?

Answer: Magic wand

The rulers of the lands of the Mushroom World have been turned into animals (and a plant) by the Koopalings who have taken over using their airships. Once either Mario or Luigi reaches the castle, he must confront the Koopaling that has attacked that land in order to return the magic wand to the king and turn him back into a human.

Though the Koopalings are no longer considered Bowser's children, they were originally labeled as such in their early appearances. The sibling set includes Iggy, Morton, Wendy, Roy, Larry, Lemmy, and Ludwig. Some of their other game appearances include "Super Mario World", "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", "New Super Mario Bros. 2", and "New Super Mario Bros. U".
3. Training is important in any conflict, and Bowser has trained his armies in the use of camouflage to make them appear as something they are not. Which of the following is not one of the enemies disguised as Bowser in the first seven castles of "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: Cheep cheep

In the first seven worlds of "Super Mario Bros." for the NES, Mario fights an enemy disguised as Bowser. In order, they are: goomba, green koopa troopa, buzzy beetle, spiny, lakitu, blooper, and a hammer brother. If Mario defeats them with fire, they turn back into their normal self before dropping into the lava pit below.

Cheep cheeps are the fish that appear in the water levels and have wing-like fins. Sometimes they may jump out of the water as Mario runs across a bridge in certain levels.
4. We can learn from Bowser's takeover tactics through his creative ways to try and stop Mario. In "Super Mario 3D World", we see Bowser develop some new technology to use against his nemesis. In the first fight with Bowser, "Bowser's Highway Showdown", which type of ball do the bombs Bowser throws at Mario resemble?

Answer: Soccer ball

During the fight, Bowser is riding backwards in the Bowser Mobile in order to throw the bombs and spit out some fireballs that leave pools of flame. The player then has to avoid the fire while kicking the soccer bombs back at Bowser in order to defeat him. This happens again in the second fight with Bowser in World Castle, though it takes a bit more to defeat him the second time around.
5. Taking over the world requires having a great deal of resources at one's disposal, and Bowser is known for having a variety of vehicles and other equipment in his arsenal. Which of the following first appeared in "Super Mario World" for the Super NES?

Answer: Koopa Clown Car

Even though it is called a 'car', the Koopa Clown Car looks more like a bowl with a face and helicopter blades on the bottom and is sometimes called the Koopa Clown Copter. During the fight with Bowser in "Super Mario World", Bowser drops enemies like mechakoopas and big steelies on the roof to attack Mario.

Bowser Jr. rides in the Junior Clown Car in "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", and the Koopalings appear in the Koopa Clown Car in "New Super Mario Bros. 2" for the 3DS.
6. Not only does Bowser have an extensive collection of weapons and vehicles, but he also has tactics to give himself an advantage even in what seems to be a friendly competition. In "Mario Party 10" for the Wii U, what does Bowser Jr. do to help out his dad after Bowser fails to roll the amount he needs to catch up to the other players in Bowser Party mode?

Answer: He gives him an extra die.

Each player takes turn rolling the die to advance on the game board. Once all players have taken a turn, Bowser then rolls his dice. He starts out having one die for every player, but if he fails to overtake the players Bowser Jr. gives him an extra die to use on his next turn so that he has better odds. If Bowser fails to overtake the players on his next turn, Bowser Jr. then gives him another die to use. Once Bowser catches up to the players, they play a random mini-game in which they have to avoid Bowser's attacks. If they are caught by Bowser's attacks they lose their hearts, and if they lose all of their hearts the game ends and Bowser wins.
7. Bowser's adaptive abilities have led to some powerful altered versions of the Koopa King in the "Mario & Luigi" series. Which of the following does Bowser turn into after eating Elder Princess Shroob's mushroom in "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time"?

Answer: Shrowser

Each game in the "Mario & Luigi" series features different versions of Bowser. In "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time", players fight against Baby Bowser, Bowser, and Shrowser. Shrowser is formed after Bowser eats the purple mushroom and becomes possessed by Elder Princess Shroob, one of the leaders of the aliens invading the Mushroom Kingdom. Shrowser looks like Bowser, only he's purple. Mario and Luigi cannot attack him directly during the fight and can only defeat him by countering his attacks.
8. Time travel is something that would give you an advantage in taking over the world, and Bowser successfully travels in time in "Yoshi's Island DS" when he travels to the past to try and kidnap the star children. He is unsuccessful in his attempts, however, and is defeated by the babies and the Yoshis. What do they use to defeat him?

Answer: Giant Yoshi Eggs

In the first part of the battle against Bowser the eggs are thrown at Bowser to flip him onto his back so he can be hit with a Ground Pound. The last part of the battle has four eggs brought in by a balloon for all four Yoshis to aim at once since Bowser has been made giant-sized by Kamek.
9. Bowser is not above resorting to tricks to foil Mario's rescue attempts. In which game does Bowser set up a cardboard cutout of Princess Peach to fool Mario into believing he has found the princess?

Answer: Super Mario 3D Land

In the first castle of World 8 in "Super Mario 3D Land", Mario defeats Bowser and finds Princess Peach's cage empty. After entering a door, he sees what he thinks is the princess, but it turns out to be a piece of cardboard made to look like the princess. Bowser shows up holding Peach and Mario has to chase after him. Mario then has to complete another level before getting to the second castle where Bowser is holding Princess Peach.
10. To successfully take over the world, a leader must ensure victory at any cost, even if that means defying death by coming back to life in an undead form. In the first castle of "New Super Mario Bros." Bowser accomplishes this after he falls into the lava pit during a fight with Mario. In which form does Bowser return after falling into the pit?

Answer: Dry Bowser

Bowser is defeated in World 1, but he returns as the boss of the World 8 castle in his Dry Bowser form. Much like the smaller Dry Bones, he is a skeleton. When he first appears in the World 8 castle, he falls apart but then reassembles himself to fight Mario. Dry Bowser also appears in several other Mario games, including "New Super Mario Bros. 2", "Mario Kart 8", "Super Mario 3D Land", and "Mario Tennis Open".
