Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I know this quiz is about Grunty's Lair, but we're going to start outside, in Spiral Mountain. What do Banjo and Kazooie need to do before they can even enter Grunty's Lair?

Answer: Learn all of Bottles' moves in Spiral Mountain so he'll fix the bridge.

There is a bridge in Spiral Mountain, connecting the top of the mountain to Grunty's Lair. It starts of broken, but Bottles will fix it. New players may elect to have Bottles teach them all the basic moves before venturing forth. If that's the case, he'll not fix the bridge until all his moves have been learned. This training can be skipped (useful for experienced players), and Bottles will immediately fix the bridge.

There are no notes, note doors, or transformations in Spiral Mountain. There are six Empty Honey Comb pieces that can only be accessed by the new moves Bottles teaches. Collecting all six will extend the health bar by one slot.
2. All the worlds in Gruntilda's Lair are ordered, and usually players will progress through sequentially. Sometimes this is forced. Which of the following do Banjo and Kazooie NOT have to do in Mumbo's Mountain (the first world) or Grunty's Lair, before traveling to Treasure Trove Cove (the second world)?

Answer: Learn to shoot Blue Eggs

In order to enter Treasure Trove Cove, players will need to get up a steep slope (Talon Trot), unlock the first Note Door (50 Notes), and then complete the Treasure Trove Cove puzzle (two Jiggies). Technically this could be done by collecting only one Jiggie from Mumbo's Mountain, and getting the second one from just above the world entrance as a termite.

Shooting Blue Eggs and the Beak Buster are both very useful moves throughout the game, so it's best to pick them up early, while in Mumbo's Mountain.
3. Which of the following moves from Treasure Trove Cove (the second world) do Banjo and Kazooie need to learn before they can access Clanker's Cavern (the third world)?

Answer: Shock Jump Pad

In the area with the Clanker's Cavern world entrance, players need to cross a body of water by raising pipes. This is done by hitting the appropriate switches with the Beak Buster (learned in Mumbo's Mountain, not Treasure Trove Cove). One of the switches is out of reach unless players can use Shock Jump Pads (learned in Treasure Trove Cove). There are no flying pads in the area.
4. Which of the following moves from Clanker's Cavern (the third world) do Banjo and Kazooie need to learn before they can access Bubblegloop Swamp (the fourth world)?

Answer: Nothing

A bit of a tricky question. The puzzle can be accessed just after learning the Talon Trot. The only other obstacle is the 180 Note Door, which means players have to explore at least two of the three available worlds before venturing into Bubblegloop Swamp. Players will need to know the moves from previous worlds to complete Bubblegloop Swamp.
5. Banjo and Kazooie can complete any world (collect all Notes, Jiggies, and Empty Honey Comb pieces) in one session, provided they learned all the moves from all the previous worlds. Except one. Which world do the pair have to return to after learning a move from a later world?

Answer: Freezeezy Peak (Fifth World)

The first break in the forward momentum is Freezeezy Peak. Players can collect everything in the world except for one Jiggie. Boggy the Polar Bear would rather race on his sled than spend time with his children. The first race is completed using the Walrus transformation, but the second requires the Turbo Trainers (learned in the next world, Gobi's Valley).
6. For most of the game, Bottles the mole will be teaching Banjo and Kazooie new moves as they explore new worlds. Which world is the last one in which Banjo and Kazooie learn a new move from Bottles?

Answer: Gobi's Valley (Sixth World)

The player learned three moves in the first world, two in the second, and one in each of the third through sixth worlds. The last move learned is the Turbo Trainers, which make Kazooie's Talon Trot very fast for a limited time. The last three worlds test the player's skills without adding any new moves.
7. In some worlds, Mumbo Jumbo will use his magic to transform Banjo into a cute critter with special abilities. Most of these transformations can be taken outside their worlds, into Grunty's Lair, but only for a short distance. Which transformation MUST be taken into Grunty's Lair in order to progress through the game?

Answer: Pumpkin

In the Mad Monster Mansion world entrance area is a crypt that can only be entered as a Pumpkin. Mumbo is inside to transform the Pumpkin back into Banjo. Inside the crypt is the first important water level switch, which raises the water in the Rusty Bucket Bay area.

It's required to hit the second switch, which lets players reach the Rusty Bucket Bay puzzle and the Click Clock Wood entrance (and beyond).
8. Throughout Grunty's Lair, her abused spellbook, Cheato, is hiding. Cheato can be found three times in the Lair, and will give Banjo and Kazooie a cheat to double their maximum consumables. Which Cheato is NOT accessed while in a Mumbo Jumbo transformation?

Answer: Gold Feathers Cheato

The Termite and the Bee can both be used in Grunty's Lair to grab a Jiggie each. The Crocodile is the only thing small enough to travel through the tunnel to the Blue Eggs Cheato. The Pumpkin is used in Grunty's Lair to raise the water level and to access the Red Feathers Cheato.

The Walrus is not used at all in Grunty's Lair. The Golden Feathers Cheato is accessed by Banjo and Kazooie hitting the highest water level switch.
9. After exploring the worlds, but before fighting the witch herself, there is a small game called Grunty's Furnace Fun that Banjo and Kazooie have to play. They have to navigate a game board, answering different kinds of questions about the game and completing challenges. The scariest tiles are the Sudden Death tiles, because if a wrong answer is given, then the duo are instantly thrown into the lava below. Is it possible to navigate Grunty's Furnace Fun without ever activating a Sudden Death Tile?

Answer: Yes

Grunty's Furnace Fun is a giant quiz game, with different tiles representing different categories. Some are generic questions about the game, some focus on images or sounds. Others still have the pair attempt again timed challenges from the game. The most notorious tiles were the Gruntilda tiles, on which Grunty would ask players about her life. Grunty's sister, Brentilda, could be found throughout the lair, providing these answers, but they were always randomized when a new save was created.

When a player answered incorrectly (or failed the time trial), one point of health was lost, except when on a sudden death tile. The sudden death tiles could take a question from any category (or time trial), with an incorrect answer tossing the pair into the lava below. The last three tiles were all sudden death tiles.

Also on the board were Joker tiles. Answering these correctly would get players two Joker cards, which could be spent to skip any tile. It is possible to amass enough Joker cards to skip every sudden death tile.
10. While Banjo and Kazooie usually went through the lair sequentially, they did not always have to, and could sometimes skip worlds entirely. Do Banjo and Kazooie have to explore every world in Grunty's Lair before fighting Grunty herself at the top?

Answer: Yes

There are a total of nine worlds plus Grunty's Lair, each with ten Jiggies, for a total of 100 Jiggies in the game. The final puzzle comes after Grunty's Furnace Fun, and requires a full set of sixteen Jiggies, bringing the total number of spent Jiggies up to 94. With a margin of only six (100-94) Jiggies, players will have to visit and collect Jiggies from every world.

There are four optional Note Doors just before the final fight. Three will replenish the player's Blue Eggs, Red Feathers, and Gold Feathers. The last will lead to a final puzzle that requires four pieces to double the player's health.
