Only Connect "Pokemon" Trivia Quiz

All of the questions in this quiz relate to various aspects of the "Pokemon" series. As an added twist, I've based this quiz on the BBC quiz show "Only Connect" (though no prior knowledge of the format is necessary to play). Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the connection between these four names?

Answer: They are Water-type Gym Leaders

Marlon is the leader of the Humilau City Gym in "Black 2" and "White 2". He has three Pokemon (four in Challenge Mode): Carracosta, Wailord, and Jellicent (Mantine joins the team in Challenge Mode).

Crasher Wake takes centre stage in the Pastoria City Gym in "Diamond", "Pearl", and "Platinum". He opts for Gyarados, Floatzel, and Quagsire in his battle.

Wallace leads the Sootopolis City Gym in "Ruby" and "Sapphire" and uses Seaking, Milotic, Luvdisc, Sealeo, and Whiscash. In "Emerald", Juan is the leader of the Sootopolis Gym, while Wallace features as the Champion of the Hoenn Pokemon League and trains Wailord, Whiscash, Milotic, Gyarados, Tentacruel, and Ludicolo.

Misty is the leader of the Cerulean Gym in "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow". She sends out a Staryu and a Starmie in her battle. She also tags along with Ash Ketchum in the "Pokemon" anime.
2. What is the connection between these four locations?

Answer: They are hometowns

Aspertia City marked the first time in the series that a hometown was actually a city, filling this role in "Black 2" and "White 2". Though it also appears previously in "Black" and "White", it is Nuvema Town that holds the title of hometown in these games.

Vaniville Town is the hometown in "X" and "Y", just south of Aquacorde Town. The player's house in Vaniville has a pet Rhyhorn outside, belonging to the mother, a former Rhyhorn racer.

Twinleaf Town features in "Diamond", "Pearl", and "Platinum" as the hometown on those games. There is a small pond in the south of the town, capable of being Surfed on and fished in.

Pallet Town is perhaps the best known of the hometowns, thanks to the "Pokemon" anime: Ash Ketchum, the central character of the anime, hails from this small town in the Kanto region. In the games, Pallet Town sits between Viridian City and Cinnabar Island, the latter only accessible once Surf has been obtained.
3. What is the connection between these four Pokemon?

Answer: They have palindromic names

Palindromes are words which are spelled the same both forwards and backwards.

Eevee is a cute little critter was the first Pokemon with a palindromic name and is known for its multitude of different evolutions.

As its name suggests, the giraffe-like Girafarig is a Normal/Psychic Pokemon that was introduced in Generation II, as is Ho-Oh, one of Johto's legendary bird Pokemon.

Alomomola joined the series in "Black" and "White" and is a Water-type Pokemon. Its heart-shaped body is not unlike Luvdisc, though Alomomola is more fishlike in the sense that it has fins.
4. What is the connection between these four locations?

Answer: They are places where a Master Ball can be obtained

The Master Ball is one of the most coveted Poke Balls in the series. With a couple of minor situational exceptions, a Master Ball is guaranteed to catch the Pokemon it is thrown at.

In "Black 2" and "White 2", Professor Juniper gives the player a Master Ball in Mistralton City after meeting for the first time. Juniper also gives the player a Master Ball in "Black" and "White", though this occurs in Opelucid City and only after all eight Gym badges have been won.

Like Juniper in "Black" and "White", Professor Elm gives players a Master Ball at his lab in New Bark Town after the eight Johto region Gym badges have been won.

In "Ruby" and "Sapphire", players can find a Master Ball amongst the corridors of their rival team's hideout. However, this needs to happen before defeating Tate and Liza, the leaders of the Mossdeep City Gym. After this, the entrance to the hideout will close, preventing any further access.

In "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", the President of Silph Co. gifts players a Master Ball after defeating Giovanni and freeing it from the clutches of Team Rocket.
5. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: 6: Palais Lane

These are the names of the routes in Kalos, going upwards from Route 3, Ouvert Way. Route 6's name is Palais Lane because it leads to Parfum Palace. It is here at the palace where the Poke Flute is obtained, so the Snorlax on Route 7 can be awoken.

Route 12 is called Fourrage Road and joins Shalour City to Coumarine City. It also provides access to Azure Bay, which contains the Sea Spirit's Den.

Route 17 is Mamoswine Road, so named because of the need to ride a Mamoswine across the snow-covered route.

Route 22 is also called Détourner Way and is located between Santalune City and Victory Road. Prior to obtaining HM03 (Surf), only the northern part of Route 22 is traversable. The aptly-named Chamber of Emptiness is located in the southern section of the route.
6. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Team Galactic

These are the names of the "villainous teams" featured in the series, going forwards from Generation I.

Team Rocket acts the team to batter in both Generation I and Generation II, first dealing as money-seeking criminals and later attempting to unnaturally evolve the Pokemon of the world through the transmission of radio waves.

Team Aqua is the rival team in "Sapphire" while Team Magma do their dirty work in "Ruby". Both teams have sinister goals: Aqua wants the oceans to grow bigger and awaken the legendary Water Pokemon Kyogre, while Magma strives for a greater land area in Hoenn and for the legendary Ground Pokemon Groudon to return to power.

Team Galactic are the bad guys in Generation IV, as they look towards the stars in the hope of recreating the universe using the legendary Pokemon Dialga and Palkia.
7. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: X/Y: Diantha

These are the Champions of the Pokemon League going forwards from "Diamond" and "Pearl". After the Steel-loving Steven and Water-favouring Wallace in "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald", these four Gym leaders tend not to favour a specific type, opting for a mixed bag of strong Pokemon.

Cynthia's team in "Diamond" and "Pearl" (and "Platinum" too) includes Spiritomb, Milotic, Garchomp, Roserade, Lucario, and Gastrodon.

In "Black" and "White", Alder sends out Accelgor, Escavalier, Volcarona, Druddigon, Bouffalant, and Vanilluxe.

Iris specialises in Dragon-type Pokemon in her role as the Opelucid Gym Leader in "Black" and "White". As the champion of the Unova League in "Black 2" and "White 2", half of her team are of the Dragon type (Hydreigon, Druddigon, and Haxorus). The other three Pokemon are Lapras, Aggron, and Archeops).

Diantha, a famous actress in the Kalos region, commands Hawlucha, Goodra, Gourgeist, Aurorus, and Tyrantrum. The sixth and final Pokemon in her team is Gardevoir, which she Mega-Evolves using its Gardevoirite.
8. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Sylveon

These are the evolutions of Eevee in the order that they appeared in the series.

Eevee's first three evolutions (Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon) were introduced in Generation I alongside Eevee and require the use of a Water Stone, Thunder Stone and Fire Stone, respectively.

Espeon and Umbreon appeared in Generation II, with the Psychic-type Espeon requiring levelling with high Friendship during the day to evolve and the Dark-type Umbreon needing it at night.

No new Eeveelutions were added in Generation III, so the next ones to join the gang were Leafeon and Glaceon in Generation IV. Levelling up Eevee near a Moss Rock produces a Leafeon, while levelling near an Ice Rock creates Glaceon.

Again, a new Eeveelution skipped a generation, with Sylveon appearing in Generation VI's "X" and "Y". Eevee needs to know a Fairy-type move and have at least two points of Affection (obtained in Pokemon-Amie) to evolve into Sylveon.
9. These three Pokemon have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: what type were they changed to in Generation VI?

Answer: Fairy

Clefairy, Togepi and Snubbull were all Normal-type Pokemon before Generation VI rolled around. With the introduction of the Fairy type, these three (along with their evolutions in both directions where appropriate) were among several Pokemon whose main type was either changed Fairy or who gained Fairy as a secondary type.

Fairy-type moves deal double damage against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting Pokemon, but a Fairy-type Pokemon will receive double the damage from Poison and Steel moves.
10. These three Pokemon have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: what comes fourth in the sequence?

Answer: TRTWG

These are the Grass-type starter Pokemon going forwards from Generation I. Bulbasaur is the first, Chikorita the second, and Treecko the third. This means that the fourth Grass-type starter is Turtwig. If the sequence were to continue, Snivy would come next, followed by Chespin.

While the holy trinity of Grass, Water, and Fire has long been given to each group of starter Pokemon, the Electric-type Pikachu was a starter in "Yellow" due to the game being based on the events of the anime. Friends and rivals have also received starter Pokemon of other types, including Blue's Eevee in "Yellow" and Wally's Ralts in "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald".
