Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kamaitachi are whirlwind-riding weasels with nails the size of sickles. If that sounds familiar, it might be because it also describes which Pokemon?

Answer: Sneasel and Weavile

In old art, Kamaitachi appear to be weasels with sickeningly-large claws. They are said to inflict nasty yet painless wounds with their claws. They often move about places by riding around on a whirlwind. Sneasel and Weavile are weasel-like Pokemon with unusually large claws, and are said to attack opponents with ice and dark wind. Kamaitachi stories often come from cold, mountainous areas. Sneasel and Weavile are dark/ice types, and in the "Pokemon" games are normally found around mountains or areas that are snowing. Sneasel evolves into Weavile with the use of a Razor Claw.
2. What signature move of Meowth helps connect it to the luck-bringing Maneki-neko?

Answer: Pay Day

The Maneki-neko is a good luck charm of a cat holding a gold coin and beckoning with a usually-motorized arm. Meowth is a small cat, similar to the maneki-neko, that stands on two feet. The Japanese also have a saying, "neko ni koban," which is similar in meaning to "pearls before swine." Meowth has a gold coin -- a koban from centuries past -- attached to its head. Meowth is also famous for being able to use the move Pay Day (Japanese, "Neko ni Koban") in battle.

It does a little damage, and if the user wins the battle, picks up some extra money.
3. An old story about priests who asked women for bronze mirrors to melt is reflected in Bronzor which evolves into what?

Answer: Bronzong

Does the bronze mirror and zhong (ceremonial bell) connection seem random? "Of a Mirror and a Bell" is a story of priests who gathered bronze mirrors to melt them and turn them into a bell, and one woman whose mirror would not melt. Bronzor and Bronzong are steel/psychic types, and their abilities allow them to either levitate (and avoid ground attacks) or be heatproof (and resist fire attacks).

In Japanese, Bronzor and Bronzong are called Doumirror and Doutakun; similarly a bronze mirror is a Doukyou and a Doutaku is a large, ancient bell.
4. What signature ability do Zorua and Zoroark possess, that would be equally appropriate for a tricky Kitsune?

Answer: Illusion

Zorua and its evolution Zoroark are dark, fox-like pokemon, and Zoroark was the first Pokemon from the fifth generation to be revealed to the public. Like Ninetales, they are based on the trickster fox known as a Kitsune, but in very different ways. Among their other abilities, Kitsune are able to create vivid illusions. Zorua and Zoroark have the ability Illusion, which allows them to take the form of another pokemon in their user's party to fool an opponent.

Their illusion ability is also integrated into the story of Pokemon Black and White, where they appear to be humans until a special event is triggered.
5. Tsuchinoko is a thick, slug-like snake cryptid. Nokocchi is the Japanese name for what uncommon Pokemon?

Answer: Dunsparce

Nokocchi is an anagram of Tsuchinoko*. Tsuchinoko is a small but dangerous reptilian cryptid with a thick, slug-like body. Dunsparce has a thick, slug-like body with a large head and large eyes. It is also one of the few Pokemon that can use moves like Glare and Coil, which are generally usable only by Pokemon based on snakes. In the games, Dunsparce is relatively rare and difficult to find, much like the ever-elusive Tsuchinoko in real life.

*However, "tsu" became a "small tsu", which doubles the letter following it, in this case "c". Thus when written in English, it does not appear to be an anagram.
6. The horns, incisors, and tiger-patterned garb of the devilish oni are readily apparent in what black-and-yellow Pokemon?

Answer: Electabuzz

Though oni are rarely associated with electricity, elements of their design can clearly be seen in Electabuzz. Oni vary in appearance, but most have horns, thick incisors, and clawed feet. All these characteristics are readily noticeable on Electabuzz.

The tiger-striped clothes that oni sometimes wear may have been the inspiration to connect Electabuzz to lightning bolts and thus make it an electric type. Other parts of Electabuzz's design, like its tail, were probably also inspired by its vague association with tigers.
7. Much like Fuujin and Raijin, Tornadus and Thundurus are legendary sky beings commonly depicted with what fashion?

Answer: riding on clouds

Often depicted together, Fuujin and Raijin are the Japanese gods of wind and lightning. They are often depicted travelling on clouds, an image which has since been depicted repeatedly in modern Japanese culture. Much like the gods they are based on, Tornadus and Thundurus are considered legendary, and have associations with the sky. Tornadus is the first Pokemon to ever be a pure flying type, while Thundurus is an electric and flying type.

The ring of drums that surrounds Raijin can also be seen in Thundurus, though in the latter it is actually a tail. An equivalent implement was given to Tornadus.
8. Buddhists ring a bell 108 times on New Year's Eve to chase away 108 temptations. What Pokemon, composed of 108 spirits, is listed as #108 in the Sinnoh Region, weighs 108 kg, and has base defensive stats of 108?

Answer: Spiritomb

Jibakurei is a Japanese spirit that is strongly attached to a specific location. Spiritomb is a ghost/dark Pokemon said to be formed from 108 spirits and bound to a keystone. It's an Odd Keystone, an item that needs to be placed in the Hallowed Tower in order to summon and capture Spiritomb.

The repeated references to 108, such as its weight and its defensive stats, come from Buddhism, where 108 is the number of beads in a prayer bead chain, volumes of Buddha's words, questions Buddha was asked, and feelings.

A player also has to talk to 32 players in the underground to help summon Spiritomb; 2 and 3 are the prime numbers in the factorization of 108.
9. China is often referenced in regards to what mysterious and "legendary" Pokemon inspired by the lion-dogs of China?

Answer: Arcanine

Chinese guardian lions are a highly stylized sort of lion commonly called foo dogs in western description. In China, stone guardian lions have stood at the entrance of palaces, temples, and aristocratic residences for thousands of years. Arcanine is a large, fiery dog described as a "legendary" species.

In Pokedex entries, it is repeatedly described as a Pokemon that is "legendary in China," making it one of the few Pokemon that is attached to a specific real-world place by name.
10. Aligning with two brothers with different ideals, Reshiram and Zekrom are notably colored to represent what opposing forces?

Answer: Yin and Yang

Reshiram and Zekrom were introduced as the mascots of Pokemon Black and White. In the game, they were said to have originally sided with two opposing brothers, based on ideals (Zekrom) and truth (Reshiram). Both of them are legendary dragons. In Japanese, the species subtypes of Reshiram and Zekrom are given as White Yang and Black Yin, though their English translations call them Vast White and Deep Black.

The black Zekrom was designed to be more masculine in appearance, while the white Reshiram was intended to be more feminine. (However, black yin is said to be feminine, while white yang is supposed to represent masculinity.)
