Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Pandora's Box' was created by Alexey Pajitnov. What very popular game did he create? Hint - Don't fall down on the job, use your French head.

Answer: 'Tetris'

Pajitnov created 'Tetris'. 'Pandora's Box' was released by Microsoft in 1999. It was nominated for Game Of The Year.
Did the hint help? Don't fall down refers to Tetris pieces falling down the screen and the French word for head is tete.
2. Even though you may have never seen 'Pandora's Box', do you have any idea what type of game it is? Don't worry, I'll give you a hint. Hint - Don't let this question confound you.

Answer: puzzle

'Pandora's Box' is a game with ten different types of puzzles, some of which I have never seen in any other games. There is no ticking clock or count down timer so you can take your time and enjoy the artwork. You do have the option to time how long it takes to work each puzzle, to listen to music and sound effects, or not.
As for the hint, confound is a synonym for puzzle.
3. The puzzles in this game start with photographs of actual people, places, and things or pieces of art.

Answer: True

After you solve each puzzle, you get an info screen that describes where the photo was taken and by whom or the title of the art piece. All the pieces relate to the city you have chosen to travel to in the game. You also have the option to go back and admire the completed puzzle/artwork or move on to the next one.
4. Which of the following is NOT a type of puzzle in 'Pandora's Box'?

Answer: all are puzzle types in the game

Focus point is a photo or painting cut into several pieces that are not in focus. As you click on any two pieces to exchange them, if they are moved to the correct place, they become focused.
With image hole, a photo or artwork is completely covered except for a few shapes from the image that are cut out and float around the screen. When the shapes are over their matching image, clicking reveals that part of the picture.
For Jesse's strips, think of running a painting or photo through a shredder and then dividing the strips. The idea is to gather all the strips and recreate the art work.
5. As mentioned, there are ten different types of puzzles in 'Pandora's Box'. Which one of the following is NOT one of the puzzle types?

Answer: all are puzzle types in the game

Find and fill consists of many figures layered on top of each other. You use a paint brush to fill in each figure with a different color. The completed figure is removed from the pile and placed in the photo or painting.
Rotascope is a photo or art work with a large circle cut into it. There are rings within the circle. Your job is to click on adjacent pieces to complete the circle which then reveals the photograph or art.
With slices, art pieces are cut into layers. Your job is to reassemble them by rotating, flipping and stacking.
6. 'Pandora's Box' has seven sides which are divided into five pieces. Each piece is a major city somewhere on earth. Each side is associated with a trickster. Shanghai's trickster is Monkey, Santa Fe's is Coyote, and Vancouver's is Raven. The following tricksters are in the game but one is not associated with the right city. Which one is it? Hint - Wear a lei while drinking Mezcal and take a guess.

Answer: trickster Maui - city Mexico City

The trickster Maui's city is Honolulu. Maui is a cultural hero from Hawaiian mythology (and the name of the second largest island). The hint is obvious, leis from Hawaii and liquid refreshment that is native to Mexico. As indicated in the question, there are five pieces/cities on each of seven sides of the box.

In each city, you solve ten puzzles. After you have solved 50 puzzles for each trickster, you must solve their challenging puzzle which can be one to three related puzzles. Once you've done that, you capture the trickster and put him in the box.

When you have captured all seven, you've saved the world from chaos and can put 'Pandora's Box' away for awhile.
7. New York City is the first place you visit to solve puzzles. There is a heart wrenching cityscape which includes the Twin Towers Memorial.

Answer: False

This game was released in 1999. The Twin Towers collapsed on September 11, 2001. There is a city scape puzzle and it is heart-wrenching because the beautiful towers are in the puzzle picture, standing in all their glory.
8. Which of the following is a puzzle in 'Pandora's Box' but not associated with the correct city? Remember that the puzzle would be a photo or piece of art from or related to the city you have selected to visit.

Answer: Brandenburg Gate in San Francisco

The Brandenburg Gate is in Berlin. There is a beautiful picture of it to put together in this game. A picture of the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the puzzles from San Francisco. Many of the photos and pieces of art in this game are used in movies and documentaries.

After playing 'Pandora's Box' so many times, I now recognize certain buildings and landmarks and know where they are even though I've never had a chance to actually visit them in person.
9. The following puzzles are in 'Pandora's Box' but one is not associated with the correct city. Which one is it?

Answer: Nicholas II Equestrian Faberge Egg in Cairo

The Faberge egg was for Tsar Nicholas in St. Petersburg, Russia, not Cairo. The egg was a gorgeous green color, encrusted with diamonds and rubies and a large golden stone in the middle of what looked like an eagle. It was stunning.
Just FYI, what I assembled in Honolulu was a figure of their state fish - go ahead, try to say it.
10. There are over 500 puzzles to work in this game.

Answer: False

10 puzzles per city, 5 cities per trickster, 7 tricksters, and 1 to 3 challenge puzzles per trickster means 371 puzzles, max. You can work the puzzles from each city in any order you want and there is usually one per city that advances you on to the next city.

There are bonuses for working certain puzzles in a limited amount of time. You also win hints to help if you get stuck or game bonuses that let you completely skip a puzzle if you want. In the game of the year edition, Microsoft added 40 puzzles of the same types but they are not associated with any particular city or trickster.

They are just available for you to play and enjoy at any time.
