Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What early plant is used to generate sunlight?

Answer: Sunflower

The Sunflower is the first seed packet you obtain in the game, simply by completing Level 1-1 in your front yard by stacking Peashooters where necessary. While sunlight will always generate from the sky on a regular basis it is far from an ideal option for your battle plan to be without Sunflowers. Every short while they will generate 25 Sun; you can upgrade the Sunflower by speaking to Crazy Dave and buying a Twin Sunflower from the Twiddydinkies shop in the back of his station wagon.

They cost 50 Sun to plant.
2. One early plant in the game can be used as a barricade to slow down advancing zombie hordes. It's based on what existing tough nut?

Answer: Walnut

Dubbed the 'Wall-nut', this charming little plant simply likes to help out, and doesn't mind being chomped on (until it's too late, at least). Costing only 50 Sun, the Wall-nut will create a barrier for all zombies that can't simply vault overtop (and there are pole-vaulting zombies). Later on in the game, in the third stage (in the backyard), you'll also find a seed packet for the Tall-Nut, a Wall-Nut which grows at double the height; it needs 125 Sun to be planted and can only be passed by flying foes.
3. What mine plant, found in the first stage of the game, will explode like a bomb when zombies come down the lane?

Answer: Potato Mine

With a big "SPUD-OW", the Potato Mine will cause massive damage to any zombies in the immediate vicinity by performing a suicide mission. You can plant a Potato Mine for only 25 Sun, but it does take a short amount of time for the thing to activate, leaving it vulnerable for about fifteen seconds as it roots.

The more-powerful Cherry Bomb is obtained earlier. For 150 Sun it explodes in a large square area, killing zombies in three lanes. This is an immediate explosion-- no rooting in.
4. At night, what nocturnal plant doesn't require Sun to be planted?

Answer: Puff-Shroom

Two stages of the game-- the second and the fourth, are completed at night-time (because zombies do not care to perceive time!). As such, certain plants will not grow as they require sunlight to flourish. Instead, you will develop an arsenal of nocturnal mushrooms and unique flora to assist you in the yards.

The first of these is the Puff-Shroom, a small projectile-firing mushroom which fires at short distances. It doesn't need Sun to be planted. You won't get a longer-ranged shroom until the Fume-shroom appears a few levels into stage two.
5. What nocturnal plant will turn zombies against one another?

Answer: Hypno-Shroom

The Hypno-Shroom costs 75 Sun to be planted and, as stronger zombies start appearing in the yard, it may make sense to plant a few to get them to turn around in their lane and take out any other zombies following behind. The power of the Hypno-Shroom doesn't become apparent until a zombie chomps into it, but it can become a useful tool in turning the zombies against one another and using the foes to your advantage.

There is no daytime equivalent for this plant.
6. What entry into your flower arsenal allows you to plant on top of your pool?

Answer: Lily Pad

The Lily Pad is the first new plant found in the third stage of the game and it's one of the most important utility plants to have. Without it you can't create new plants on top of the water in your backyard pool, leaving you open to attacks from water-bound zombies (in inner tubes, on zombie dolphins, etc.). For only 25 Sun, you can pop a Lily Pad onto the water and then create new plants of all sorts on top.

There are also several water-based plants like Tangle Kelp and Sea-Shrooms which you can plant in the water to the same effect; both work directly to stop water zombies, but you can't plant on top of them.
7. Which of these plants enhances the firepower of a projectile?

Answer: Torchwood

Torchwood, found in the third stage of the game, is placed in front of projectile-firing (pea-shooting) plants to set them ablaze, doing more damage to zombies further down the lane. Planted at a steep 175 Sun, they can easily be worth the cost since they double the firepower.

They do not work when you need to use mushrooms to shoot zombies. Only Peashooters, Repeaters, and Three-Peaters will apply. They also disperse a little bit of fog as it rolls in in Stage Four of the campaign.
8. What is required to use plants on the roof of your house?

Answer: Flower Pot

Although you don't start with the Planter as soon as you begin Stage Five of the game on your roof, it shows up soon after and at a cost of 25 Sun per Planter it becomes a necessity as you finish off the adventure. Since there is no dirt/lawn/Lily Pad on the roof of the house, planters are needed to give a firm base to all flora, even if it doesn't need to take root.

As such, Bungee Zombies can drop in and steal them, they can be shattered, and you can simply start with too few. In later stages, Planters are required to expand your side of the map and get some ground back from the horde. Weirdly, it is also a plant.
9. In the final stage of the game, since you are fighting on a slope roof, which of these catapults will not be used to fight the zombies?

Answer: Corn-pult

You start Stage Five with the Cabbage-Pult but soon expand the arsenal to the buttery Kernel-Pult, which can slow enemies, and the Melon-Pult, which also does splash damage to zombie foes. The Cabbage-pult and Kernel-Pult both cost 100 Sun to be created, much like the standard Peashooter, while the Melon-Pult, one of the most powerful projectile plants in the game, costs 300 Sun to plant on the roof.

While there is no Corn-Pult in the game, you can buy the Cob Cannon from Crazy Dave for $20,000.

While it is the most powerful flower in the game it is also the slowest to reload and replant (and the costliest).
10. What plant will allow you to use nocturnal mushrooms during the daytime?

Answer: Coffee Beans

The Coffee Bean is introduced in Stage Five and opens up the arsenal to include nearly all of the plants in the game. When a mushroom is planted during the day it will promptly fall asleep because it normally can't be used in the sunshine. Giving it a Coffee Bean, however, will wake up up for the battle.

It doesn't seem to mind being consumed. It costs 75 Sun to be added into the battle. This tactic may not be worth your time in the heat of battle since it requires another seed slot to be taken up, but it can result in some interesting achievements.
