Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these starter Pokémon is not particularly effective against the first gym?

Answer: Charmander

Charmander (Fire-type) is not very effective against the first gym (Rock-type) but Bulbasaur (Grass-type) and Squirtle (Water-type) are super effective against Rock-type Pokémon.

Note that you can catch Mankey (Fighting-type) at Route 22 which is also super effective against Rock-type Pokémon if you chose Charmander.
2. Which set of these Pokémon does Misty have?

Answer: Staryu and Starmie

Misty, the second gym leader, uses Water-type Pokémon and has a Level 18 Staryu and a Level 21 Starmie.

Misty's Starmie is very strong with its Water Pulse. If Bulbasaur isn't your starter Pokémon, you can obtain a Pikachu from Viridian Forest to fight against Misty for badge.
3. Some Pokémon evolve through trading with items. Which of these Pokémon does not need an item to evolve?

Answer: Machoke

Machoke does not need any items to evolve while trading. Onix needs a Metal Coat, Poliwhirl needs a King's Rock and Seadra needs a Dragon Scale.

Other than Machoke who turns into Machamp through trading, Kadabra, Graveler, and Haunter will also evolve through trading into Alakazam, Golem, and Gengar respectively.
4. Magikarp will only have two moves before it evolves into Gyarados, one of them is Splash, what is the other one?

Answer: Tackle

Magikarp will always have the move Splash and when it reaches Level 15, it will learn Tackle and after that, no moves can be learned until it evolves into Gyarados at Level 20.

Although Magikarp is listed as a useless Pokémon, its speed is very fast, especially in rain. Its speed may be as fast as Gyarados'.
5. How can you evolve a Kabuto to a Kabutops?

Answer: Level up to Level 40

You can evolve a Kabuto into a Kabutops by leveling it up to 40. It doesn't need any items or happiness to help it to evolve.

You can get Kabuto or Omanyte through obtaining fossils during the first time you get pass Mt. Moon. After defeating a trainer, you will gain the choice to choose between Dome Fossil and Helix Fossil. You can get Kabuto by choosing Dome Fossil and Omanyte by choosing Helix Fossil.
6. In Celadon City, beside the Game Corner, there is an old man who you can reach by surfing through the pond. What does the old man do?

Answer: Teaches Softboiled to one of your Pokémon

The old man will teach you a move, Softboiled, which allows a Pokémon to restore life during battle.

You can trade your Poliwhirl for Jynx from a guy in Cerulean City.
You can get TM22 (Solarbeam) from Pokémon Mansion.
7. You can catch one of the legendary dogs later on in the game depending on your starter Pokémon. If you chose Charmander as your starter, which legendary dog will you get to catch?

Answer: Suicune

If you chose Charmander, you get to catch Suicune. If you chose Squirtle, you get to catch Raikou and if you chose Bulbasaur, you get to catch Entei later on in the game.

Other legendaries like Lugia, Ho-oh and Deoxys are only available during Nintendo's events, but you can search for cheats which lead you to them.
8. Which of these HM moves cannot be taught to a Tyranitar?

Answer: Waterfall

Tyranitar can learn Strength, Rock Smash, and Surf. It sounds ridiculous that it can learn Surf, but it is true.

Tyranitar can also learn some powerful moves such as Blizzard, Hyper Beam, Thunder, Earthquake and Fire Blast.
9. Which of these Pokémon cannot be caught in the Safari Zone?

Answer: Ponyta

Tauros and Chansey are available to catch by grass encounters, Dragonair is available to catch by surfing but it is very rare. You can also get Kangaskhan and Pinsir ("LeafGreen") or Scyther ("FireRed") from the Safari Zone.

Ponyta is only available to catch in Mt. Ember (where you can catch Moltres as well) at One Island.
10. Which of the statements below is not true?

Answer: Chesto Berry is used to restore 10 HP

An Old Rod can be obtained from a fisherman in a house beside the Pokécentre in Vermilion City. You can get Gold Teeth from the Safari Zone, give it to an old man in Fuchsia City and in trade, he will give you HM04 (Strength). Three legendary birds can be caught in Seafoam Island, Mt Ember and Power Plant at Level 50 each. Chesto Berry is used to wake a sleeping Pokémon up and an Oran Berry is used to restore 10 HP.
