Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Pokemon, the doctor tells me, has an eating disorder. It will devour almost anything using its enormous tongue. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Lickitung

Luckitung is unusual, even among Pokemon. It is slightly chubby and pink in colour, but its most distinguishing characteristic is its 6'6" tongue, which is also its main form of attack in games like "Pokemon Red", "Pokemon Blue", and "Pokemon Stadium". Also in "Pokemon Stadium", Lickitung features in a special game called "Sushi-Go-Round" where it runs around and tries to eat the pieces of sushi of highest value, avoiding those which will burn its prized tongue.
2. Aside from being a floating ball with questionable skin, this next Pokemon has been diagnosed with halitosis, on account of the noxious gas it emits. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Koffing

Koffing is certainly not one of the "cutsie" Pokemon and is one that is favoured by the menacing Team Rocket. It is described as a poison gas Pokemon and it evolves into an even more unpleasant being known as Weezing. Both Koffing and Weezing are kept afloat by the poison gas inside them, which they can fire at enemies.
3. When the doctor tells me that this Pokemon has a fever, I think "duh, he's a fire Pokemon and will hopefully evolve into the mighty Charizard". Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Charmander

Charmander is one of the three Pokemon offered to you at the beginning of the "Pokemon Red/Blue" games, the others being Bulbasaur and Squirtle. The Pokemon you choose is important as this will be your only Pokemon for the first part of the game. Your rival, Gary, will choose the Pokemon that is most likely to defeat the one you choose.

For example, if you choose Charmander (a fire Pokemon), Gary will choose Squirtle (a water Pokemon).
4. The doctor quickly diagnoses this next Pokemon with a classic case of narcolepsy, and prescribes three doses of Poke-Flute each day. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Snorlax

Snorlax is a large green and cream monster that is usually sleeping. One of the best ways to wake up a Snorlax is to play the Poke-Flute. However, waking a Snorlax makes it angry...very angry - so why do it? For one thing, a Snorlax can often be found blocking important pathways in the "Pokemon Red/Blue" games and needs to be dealt with so you can pass. Also, if you wish to catch a Snorlax, you also need it to first wake up.
5. This spritely and cute Pokemon seems healthy, but the doctor tells me that it suffers from multiple personality disorder. Not only can this Pokemon evolve into Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon, but it can also evolve into several others if treated with the right stone. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Eevee

Eevee is based on the fennec fox, with its characteristic large ears. In the original 150 Pokemon, Eevee was able to evolve into Jolteon if treated with the Thunderstone, Vaporeon if given the Water Stone, and Flareon if given the Fire Stone. As the number of Pokemon grew, so did the number of ways in which the genetically unstable Eevee could evolve.
6. The doctor seems to think that this next Pokemon suffers from gender confusion. I explain, however, that there are two Pokemon with this name, and the males and females are distinguished by the gender symbol at the end of the name. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Nidoran

Many Pokemon can be male or female, but the two genders of Nidoran are two separate creatures. The male is denoted by the Mars symbol and the female by the Venus symbol. The two can be found in the Safari Zone in "Pokemon Red/Blue" and can evolve ultimately into Nidoking and Nidoqueen respectively.
7. The doctor swiftly hands me some skin cream for this next Pokemon, who is covered in hard plates, and a nail file for its oversized claws. Which Pokemon is this?

Answer: Sandslash

Sandslash evolves from Sandshrew and is described as the Mouse Pokemon, despite being more akin to a pangolin. Neither Sandslash nor Sandshrew really takes centre stage, but in "Pokemon Stadium" Sandshrew features in a special game called "Dig Dig Dig", where you are challenged to use this Pokemon to dig a hole as fast as possible.
8. As this next Pokemon proceeds to knock various medical implements from the shelves, the doctor puts his clumsiness down to a motor skills disorder. This is one of the less surprising diagnoses. Which billed Pokemon is this?

Answer: Psyduck

Psyduck is similar in form to the duck-billed platypus, and is equally as odd as its real-life counterpart. In the television series, Psyduck belonged to Misty and would often make life difficult with its clumsy behaviour. While you're at the Pokemon Centre, you may also wish to get some aspirin for the headache which Psyduck suffers from.
9. "Uh oh", says the doctor, "this Pokemon is a clear-cut case of Intermittant Explosive Disorder". "In English, doc!" I plead. This means that the Pokemon suffers from periods of extreme anger, which fits with the fact that it was unable to be held by the scientists in the lab. Which infamous Pokemon is this?

Answer: Mewtwo

Mewtwo is Pokemon #150 and was the result of a lab experiment gone wrong. Some accounts say that Mewtwo was born to Mew (Pokemon #151) and subsequently had its genome tampered with. However, this Pokemon was far more powerful than the scientists envisaged and could not be contained.
10. Just as I am about to leave the Pokemon Centre with my mountain of medicine, the doctor calls me back and says that my staunch determination to capture every single Pokemon seems a little extreme, and that I may suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. What is the name of the original Pokemon protagonist whose quest it is to "catch 'em all"?

Answer: Ash Ketchum

Ash is a happy-go-lucky capped figure that appears in the television series and several "Pokemon" games. His constant companion is Pikachu, with whom he has a close relationship, but he wants to catch every single Pokemon, recording them in the Pokedex given to him by Professor Oak.

This seemed an achievable task when there were only 150 Pokemon, but as the number grows, Ash's task seems more and more difficult.
