'Pokémon Blue', Fractured Trivia Quiz

Answer: Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur, a grass-type Pokémon which is assigned the number one on the Kanto Pokédex, is one of three Pokémon that is offered by Professor Oak at the start of the protagonist's journey. The other two Pokémon that are available are Squirtle and Charmander, a water-type and a fire-type respectively.

Answer: Pikachu

Pikachu is a well known Pokémon even amongst people who aren't a fan of video games. This is due to his visibility in both the anime television and film series as the sidekick of the protagonist, Ash Ketchum. Pikachu is not available as a starter Pokémon in 'Pokémon Blue' but is available in 'Pokémon Yellow'; in fact, Pikachu is the mandatory starter Pokémon in this version.

Answer: Kanto

Kanto is the name of the region in which the 'Blue', 'Red' and 'Yellow' versions of the game are set as well as being the region in which the remakes, 'FireRed' and 'LeafGreen', are primarily set. Kanto is home to the eight gyms which must be visited by a player in order for them to gain badges and to subsequently battle the Elite Four (Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha and Lance) on Indigo Plateau.

Answer: Boulder Badge

In 'Pokémon Blue', the first gym leader is the rock-type specialist Brock, who uses Geodude and Onix. This battle can be straightforward for a player who has selected Squirtle or Bulbasaur as their starter Pokémon as rock-types are weak to water and grass-type moves. Brock is a little more tricky for those who started off with Charmander, as rock-type Pokémon aren't strongly affected by fire-type moves. Once Brock is beaten, he will award the Boulder Badge which will allow the player to use a move called Flash.

Answer: Cerulean City

Cerulean City is the home of the gym whose leader is Misty, a character from the early days of the anime. When Misty is beaten she will award the player a Cascade Badge, which allows for the use of the Cut move outside of battle. Misty uses two Pokémon in the gym battle and they are both water-types: Staryu and Starmie.

This combination could be difficult for a player whose strongest Pokémon is the fire-type Charmander, as fire-types are weak to water-types.

Answer: Team Rocket

Team Rocket is a criminal organisation that is spread all over Kanto and they serve as the main enemy of the protagonist. The leader of Team Rocket is Giovanni, who is, in the 'Red', 'Blue', 'Yellow', 'LeafGreen' and 'FireRed' versions of the game, the leader of the eighth and final badge-awarding gym.

By the time that the protagonist battles Giovanni at the gym in Viridian City, he will already have faced the Team Rocket leader on multiple occasions.

Answer: Lavender Town

Lavender Town is one of the few settlements on Kanto that does not have a gym; the protagonist's home of Pallet Town is another such location. Despite the lack of badges that can be won in Lavender Town, there is still plenty of significant story arcs that must be completed. One of the main jobs is the ascent of Pokémon Tower, a building that is haunted by ghost-type Pokémon such as Gastly. Once the tower has been successfully navigated, the Poké Flute is awarded and this can be used to awaken sleeping Pokémon such as the normal-type Snorlax, who blocks the routes to other settlements.

Answer: Mewtwo

Mewtwo, one of the strongest Generation I Pokémon, can be found in Cerulean Cave, just to the left of Nugget Bridge. This is the one and only opportunity a player will have to catch the legendary beast and thus many people will save their one and only Master Ball (the well-known cheat notwithstanding) for this occasion as this particular ball is guaranteed to catch any Pokémon being faced.

Answer: Legendary

Joining Mewtwo in the club of legendary Pokémon in the 'Blue', 'Red' and 'Yellow' versions of the game are three birds: Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. These birds are tricky to catch and it can often take a large number of balls (Poké Ball, Ultra Ball and Great Ball) before the Pokémon submits itself to your ownership.

The graceful Articuno is an ice-type and flying-type Pokémon that can be found in the Seafoam Islands, an archipelago home to a cave full of annoying strength puzzles. The fierce-looking Zapdos is dual electric and flying-type and can be found in the Power Plant, a building packed with electric-type Pokémon, just off Route 10.

The dazzling Moltres is both a fire-type and flying-type Pokémon which resides in a cave on Victory Road, the route that leads to the Elite Four on Indigo Plateau.

Answer: Toe Toe Dial

Totodile is a Generation II water-type Pokémon that is not present in the Generation I games 'Blue', 'Red' and 'Yellow'. The first occurrence of Totodile is as a potential starter Pokémon in the 'Gold', 'Silver' and 'Crystal' versions of the game. The analog of Professor Oak in the Generation II games is Professor Elm (notice the arboreal theme) who resides in New Bark Town. It is Professor Elm who gives the protagonist a choice of three Pokémon and those Pokémon are Totodile, as already mentioned, the grass-type Chikorita and the fire-type Cyndaquil.

Magic Carp = Magikarp (A Pokémon that would be worthless if it didn't evolve into Gyarados).

Crab Be = Krabby (A slightly better water-type Pokémon to have than Magikarp but still not particularly great).

Coughing = Koffing (A well-known Pokémon due to its prominence in the anime. Not a bad addition to a player's group of six).
