Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which generation of "Pokémon" games did Togepi first appear?

Answer: Second

Togepi also demonstrates other elements that first appear in the second generation of "Pokémon" games. For example, Togepi hatches from the first egg found in the video game series. Also, Togepi evolves by happiness, which is a method of evolution introduced in the second generation of games.
2. Which generation of "Pokémon" games was the first to require you to trade certain Pokémon for them to evolve?

Answer: First

Out of the original 150 Pokémon, four of them evolve by trading. The Pokémon that evolve in this manner are Kadabra into Alakazam, Machoke into Machamp, Graveler into Golem, and Haunter into Gengar. Other methods of evolution in the first generation are limited to leveling up and using evolution stones, but many other methods are introduced throughout the other generations.
3. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduces the move called Waterfall?

Answer: First

Waterfall was introduced as an attack in the first generation of games that only Goldeen and Seaking could learn, and that at a fairly high level. In the second generation of games, Waterfall became a move teachable through Hidden Machine. This move became necessary to navigate certain routes and dungeons in the second and later generations of games.
4. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduced Technical Machines numbered higher than fifty?

Answer: Fourth

With the increasing number of moves each generation came out with, it's no wonder that there are now 92 Technical Machines in the fourth generation of "Pokémon" games. Some of the moves teachable through TM in this generation have never been teachable through TM before.
5. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduced Pokémon Contests?

Answer: Third

Pokémon Contests pit your creatures against others in one of five areas. These are Beauty, Coolness, Toughness, Smartness, and Cuteness. Winning these contests will add to your ribbon collection.
6. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduced the Water/Bug type combination?

Answer: Third

The Pokémon referred to here is Surskit, introduced in Hoenn. Surskit evolves into Masquerain, and in doing so exchanges the water part of its type for flying. Masquerain then becomes only one in a long list of Bug/Flying types.
7. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduced breeding?

Answer: Second

The first breeder the player comes to in the series is just outside Goldenrod City in the Johto region. Breeding also opens the door to baby Pokémon, such as Magby, Smoochum, Cleffa, and many others. Although baby Pokémon are not the best to go take on the Elite Four with, they are known for their cuteness and help complete your Pokédex.
8. Starter Pokémon, through the fourth generation, are predominantly Grass, Fire, and Water types. Which is the first generation of "Pokémon" games to introduce subtypes for the starting Pokémon (for example, in the fourth generation, Empoleon is Water/Steel)?

Answer: First

In the first generation of "Pokémon" games, Bulbasaur and its evolutions are Grass/Poison, and Charizard is Fire/Flying. Interestingly enough, the second generation offers the only complete set of starters with no subtypes: Chikorita and its evolutions are strictly Grass, Cyndaquil and its evolutions are strictly Fire, and Totodile and its evolutions are strictly Water.

The third generation introduces Fire/Fighting and Water/Ground combinations for starters, and the fourth generation gives us Grass/Ground and Water/Steel combinations for starters.
9. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduces wireless communication between games?

Answer: Second

In the second generation of "Pokémon" games, the only thing a player can do wirelessly is exchange Mystery Gifts via the infrared sensor on the Game Boy Color. These capabilities have evolved immensely since then, as the fourth generation of "Pokémon" games allows players to trade and battle via Wi-fi around the world!
10. Which generation of "Pokémon" games introduced 2-on-2 battling?

Answer: Third

One criticism of this function when it first came out was that for all in-game 2-on-2 battles, the computer opponent used only two Pokémon. This tended to make 2-on-2 battles fairly easy in "Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire", including the gym battle with Tate and Liza. In the fourth generation 2-on-2 battles commonly include more than two opposing Pokémon, adding to the challenge.
