Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As you go through the levels, you kill enemies, get items, and collect coins. What must you collect as you go through to be able to unlock all of the worlds?

Answer: Star Medals

There are three Star Medals in every level, and you can also get Star Medals in Mystery Boxes. These Star Medals are similar to the Star Coins found in "New Super Mario Bros." for the Wii. You can use them to unlock certain levels, Mystery Boxes, and the special worlds.
2. As you work your way through the first eight worlds, what special item do you get to assist you if you die five times in one level?

Answer: Invincibility Leaf

Once you have died five times in a level that you haven't beaten, a yellow box with a white and gold striped leaf on it appears. Using the Invincibility Leaf inside will give Mario a special Tanooki Suit that makes him invincible for the rest of the level. Unfortunately, this help is not available in the special worlds.
3. If the help you receive from the special power-up you get after dying five times isn't enough and you continue to die, you are given a P-Wing after ten deaths. What does this allow Mario to do?

Answer: Fly straight to the flagpole.

The P-Wing first appeared in "Super Mario Bros. 3" for the NES where it gave Mario and Luigi the ability to fly. Here, it is only available after ten deaths in one unconquered level, and only in the first eight worlds. Once you have died ten times, a box with a P-Wing on the side of it will appear. Touching the item will store it, but you can touch the screen to use it. Once you do, Mario will be transported immediately to the flagpole, skipping the rest of the level.
4. At the beginning of the game, you can only play as Mario. How do you get the ability to play as Luigi?

Answer: You must rescue him.

Once you have defeated Bowser in World 8 and rescue the princess, you receive a picture and note showing that Luigi has been captured. You are then able to play the special worlds, and you rescue Luigi after defeating the castle in Special World 1. Once you have rescued him, you are then able to play as Luigi and can switch back and forth between the two brothers.
5. The special worlds in "Super Mario 3D Land" are considerably harder than the regular ones. One enemy that makes some of the levels challenging is an evil Mario look-alike. What is he called?

Answer: Cosmic Clone

Mario's Cosmic Clone first appears in Special World 1-2. He follows your every move and deals damage if he touches you. Sometimes the Cosmic Clone is referred to as a Shadow Clone since he looks like a shadow with a purple outline that mimics everything you do.
6. Another challenging aspect of some of the levels in the special worlds is the amount of time you are given to complete the level. In some levels you are given only thirty seconds at the start and must collect Plus Clocks to keep from running out of time. Which color Plus Clock will add ten seconds to your time?

Answer: Blue

There are two different colored Plus Clocks: blue and green. The green ones are larger than the blue, and they award 100 seconds. The blue Plus Clocks are more common and only award ten seconds. In some levels they are just laying around, but in others you must kill enemies to get the clocks.
7. While playing in the special worlds, beware of the Poison Mushroom. Though it follows you, it can be destroyed. Which of the following is NOT a way to get rid of a Poison Mushroom?

Answer: Using a Super Mushroom

The Poison Mushrooms are purple and pink and have a sinister glow about them. They follow you until they either fall off a ledge or you get to a place where they get stuck and can't follow you anymore. If you want to get rid of them sooner and not have to worry about them anymore, you can hit them with Fireballs and Boomerangs. If you have a Statue Leaf, you can use the Tanooki Suit it gives you to turn to stone, which will cause the Poison Mushroom to disappear if it touches you.
8. In some levels, there are hidden Toads that give special items. How do you find them?

Answer: Using the binoculars

The binoculars in a level let you look around the level to see what is coming up. You can zoom in and out with the binoculars to get a better look. If you happen to spot a Toad, he will throw out either a Star Medal or a 1-Up. If you don't zoom in on a Toad that throws out a Star Medal with the binoculars, you will not be able to get that particular Star Medal since it won't appear on its own.
9. Since Bowser is defeated in the castle of World 8, who appears as the boss in castles in the special worlds?

Answer: Dry Bowser

First appearing in "New Super Mario Bros.", Dry Bowser is a skeletal version of Bowser that blows out blue fire while moving toward Mario. He also jumps to create a shockwave and will try to hit Mario with his tail. To get rid of him, Mario must hit the switch to make him drop into the lava.
10. What are the names of the two enemies that Mario must fight in the airships?

Answer: Boom Boom and Pom Pom

Boom Boom is orange-yellow with a red shell, while Pom Pom is pink and has a yellow ponytail. Boom Boom has somewhat large arms that he uses to hit Mario while spinning. He can also retreat to his shell and spin around the room. Pom Pom uses a boomerang and hovers over Mario's head after she is hit. In some airships, Mario has to fight both Boom Boom and Pom Pom at the same time.
