Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a two-player game, who does the second player control?

Answer: Luigi

You can choose to start a one-player or two-player game from the start screen, but the game isn't really affected regardless of the option you choose. The aim of the game is to proceed through the levels and get to Princess Toadstool to save her from Bowser, and to do that you need to dodge obstacles and jump across platforms without losing lives.

In a two-player game, only one player acts at a time. If Mario loses a life, then Luigi takes a turn until he loses a life.
2. Most seasoned players of the game know about the ability to warp to later levels. How do you do this?

Answer: By entering a pipe

The first such warp area is found towards the end of World 1-2; you need to get up and over the ceiling of the stage near the end of the underground area to gain access to the three pipes. You get the choice and there's no going back. You can teleport yourself to the start of World 2, 3, or 4 with no fuss.

There are also two Warp Zones in World 4-2 (to take you to worlds 6, 7, and 8 and another that just takes you to World 5).
3. Who is the final boss?

Answer: Bowser

Every world of the game has four levels and the fourth always takes place in a castle filled with pitfalls, lava, and fire. The closer you get to the end of each castle, the more fire you'll encounter as it's fired from Bowser's chamber. The first seven of these castles feature a Bowser lookalike (one of his henchmen) but the last one will ultimately feature the King Koopa himself. To beat Bowser you just need to hit the axe at the back end of his bridge and send him falling into a pit of lava.
4. Who is Mario able to save at the end of the castle in World 1-4?

Answer: Toad

While the goal of the game is certainly to save Princess Toadstool, actually reaching her is a bit tougher than just showing up at the first castle and getting to the end of it. Every world visited in the game ends with a castle in its fourth stage and each final room-- a pit of lava covered by a retractable bridge-- contains an antechamber containing a prisoner. All but the last of these all contain one of Princess Toadstool's Toad servants. Only the last features Princess Toadstool.
5. When Mario collects 100 coins, what does he get?

Answer: A one-up

Coins aren't overly plentiful in this game, but they can be accumulated both out in the open and from question mark blocks scattered throughout each stage. Although some stages feature one-up mushrooms hidden in the question mark blocks, the only other way to improve longevity is by either not dying or collecting one hundred coins.

A typical one-up mushroom in later "Mario" games would be green. In this game, its spots are green.
6. The majority of levels in the game end when Mario reaches which of these?

Answer: Flag

Each stage of the game ends with Mario reaching a flagpole, and when hit it will start the animation to close out the level. The first three levels of any world contain the flagpole, even if the level is underground or underwater (in which case Mario will take a pipe to the surface).

The flagpole, besides signifying the end, also contributes to Mario's point total. The higher on the flagpole Mario can reach before lowering the flag, the more points he'll have added to his cumulative total.
7. All items collected in this game will increase Mario's point total.

Answer: False

Although this is certainly the case for the majority of items in the game, Mario won't gain any extra points from collecting a one-up mushroom. Coins, regular mushrooms, and fire flowers all contribute point values with coins producing the least (due to their frequency) and mushrooms and fire flowers contributing a total of 1,000 points.

Other methods of accruing points include reaching the flagpole, defeating enemies, and finishing a level with time on the clock.
8. How many worlds are featured in the game?

Answer: Eight

The game contains eight worlds, each of which has four stages. Each world featured in the game has a different aesthetic that shifts into different styles as you progress. In nearly each case, the first stage of a world will be a pretty consistent, flat level while the second and third might take on a new game mechanic (eg. swimming) or increase pitfalls for the sake of difficulty.

The fourth level is always a castle stage.
9. Completion of the game unlocks which of the following?

Answer: Hard Mode

Completion of the game involves getting through all thirty-two levels by any means and killing the real Bowser at the end of World 8-4. When this is done, the real Princess Toadstool will finally be reached and she will congratulate Mario on a job well-done before giving the option of visiting the worlds one more time at a harder difficulty.

These new versions of the earlier levels will replace Goombas with Buzzy Beetles and add a few more tough spots and obstacles to amp up the challenge but, otherwise, the game is done.

There's nothing more to gain.
10. In many regions, "Super Mario Bros." was released in a cartridge with which other NES game?

Answer: Duck Hunt

Primarily sold in North America (but also showing up in other regions as a region-locked exclusive), the "Super Mario Bros."/"Duck Hunt" set came in two forms, the first being in an 'Action Set' bundled with the NES Zapper and the second being in a cartridge with a third game, "World Class Track Meet". "Duck Hunt" is known for being the main game on the console to make use of the light gun; it had little traction with other titles on the console and was replaced by the Super Scope on the SNES.
