If you played further into the game, you learn that it wasn't the real Lloyd but Decus disgused as him. He never actually saw Lloyd (the real one) until the battle in Lake Shinoa Cave. He met Richter in Luin.

Marta chose him to become a knight of Ratatosk, the Lord of Monsters. When he accepted the pact, his clothes changed, he gained amazing amounts of power, he gained the ability to make pacts with monsters, and he brought his "other-self" to the surface.

After you make a pact with the Imp and the Black Wolf, you are on your own with the monsters. You do gain other pacts that you have to make in order to complete the storyline. For example, you have to make a pact with Archelon in order to enter the Fire Temple.

Luin isn't that far away from the Tower of Mana. You exit with the switch behind Lloyd's poster and you come out of the Tower of Mana's basement. You see that the once-great Seal of Light (which takes forever to climb in the first game) is in ruins.

Marta liked Emil the instant she first met him. She had this image of him in her mind that was nothing like the real Emil. She saw him as a strong, courageous warrior, her "Knight of Ratatosk in Shining Darkness", but Emil was very shy and cowardly.

I don't want to spoil this and tell you exactly who the "human" is, but this line became important to Emil. Whenever he needed courage or when he was feeling the most lousy, he would flashback to this quote and pull through.

Emil moved in with his Aunt Flora (his mother's sister) and his Uncle Alba. Alba is afraid of Emil and thus treats him the worst of anyone else in Luin. If you join the Richter sidequest, you will meet up with Alba again before the end of the game.

You can try all you want but it will be useless. Lloyd is too strong. Even with the items you get from clearing the first "Tales of Symphonia", it isn't enough to take out Lloyd. No matter how much you hit him, his health does not go down.
