Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Unlike the "House of the Dead" games before this, "The House of the Dead 3" arcade machine, although retaining much of the elements from the two prequels, featured a newer type of lightgun to fit the type of weapon used by the protagonists in the game. As opposed to the handguns used in the two prequels, what type of gun does "House of the Dead 3" feature?

Answer: Shotgun

Newer lightgun games were beginning to feature rifles, submachineguns, machineguns, and even sniper rifles, and so "House of the Dead 3" was the first in the series to move away from the handgun and feature a shotgun as the main weapon. Aside from the changes it's physical size would cause, this new feature had quite an impact in the gameplay as well; a player in the arcade would need to pump the shotgun to reload, and unlike the prequels, the guns actually took a few moments to reload ingame as opposed to the older handguns reloading as soon as the player shoots off the screen.
2. Preceeding the events of "House of the Dead 3", a undead began to horde the world, bringing humanity to the brink of destruction. This event is referred to as the "World Collapse". Over a decade and a half later, survivors of the world collapse identify a research facility as the source behind the undead, which brings us to the events that take place within the game. In what year does "House of the Dead 3" take place?

Answer: 2019

"The House of the Dead 3" takes place twenty-one years after the first "House of the Dead" game. Since that time, Thomas Rogan has had a daughter, who is twenty years old in 2019, and both Rogan and his former partner G both show signs of physical age since their debut in the first "House of the Dead".
3. The game starts showing "House of the Dead 1" protagonist Thomas Rogan, who is introduced as a "former" AMS agent, leading a team of commandos into the research facility. Chapter 0 begins with player 1 takes control of Rogan, and player 2 takes control of Dan Taylor, the last surviving member of Rogan's commandos. Do the players face a boss in this chapter?

Answer: No

Although the boss "Death" is seen briefly in the cutscene at the end of the chapter, the players never actually confront him until Chapter 1. When Rogan and Taylor reach the lab at the end, Taylor is immediately killed, and Rogan is later struck by Death's club. The Chapter ends with Rogan's vision blurring as he watches a mysterious figure (Later revealed as Daniel Curien) approach him.
4. Excluding Thomas Rogan and G, do any other characters from a previous "House of the Dead" game make an appearance in "House of the Dead 3"?

Answer: Yes

Aside from Rogan and G, the only other character from a previous "House of the Dead" installment is Dr Curien, the antagonist from the first "House of the Dead" game. During the climax of the first "House of the Dead", Curien was betrayed and killed by the untamed Magician, but cutscenes in "House of the Dead 3" show the events leading up to his madness. Dr Curien had spent his life trying to create for a cure for his son Daniel, who suffered from terminal illness. Curien's obsession to create a cure eventually drove him mad, but alas he did succeed in saving Daniel's life.

It was too late for Curien himself though, as we see in the first "House of the Dead", he has been driven into complete madness and had performed most of his experiments on his own scientists.
5. Like the previous "House of the Dead" games, "House of the Dead 3" features bonus items such as coins and golden frogs that the player can shoot to earn bonus points. One of the more valuable bonus items the player can shoot is the "Mini Magician", which is a miniature golden version of the boss "Magician" from the previous games, flying around speaking in a high-pitched voice. The sentence that the Mini-Magician speaks is something said by Magician in "House of the Dead 2". What is this sentence?

Answer: "I've been waiting for this time to come"

"I've been waiting for this time to come", is the first thing Magician says when he makes his return as the boss of Chapter 5 in "House of the Dead 2". The Mini-Magician speaks this line over and over, until it is either shot by the player, or is no longer visible on the screen.

"You haven't seen anything yet" is spoken by Magician after he is defeated in "House of the Dead 2" right before he explodes. "I shall destroy everything", although was never physically said by Magician, accurately describes his way of thinking, as opposed to bosses like Emperor, who plans to rule over everything, and the Wheel of Fate, who plans on recreating everything after it is destroyed. "Your fate is in our hands" is the late thing Magician says in "House of the Dead 2" right before the player(s) begin battling with him.
6. When Chapter 1 begins, who are the two characters that the player(s) take control of for the majority of the game?

Answer: Lisa Rogan & G

The players take control of Thomas Rogan & Dan Taylor during Chapter 0, but when Dan is killed and Thomas captured, Thomas's daughter Lisa decides to look for him, and Thomas's old partner G agrees to help her. The player(s) control these two all the way through Chapters 1-4, and the first half of Chapter 5, before Player 2 begins controlling Daniel Curien for the last part of Chapter 5 and the boss fight against the Wheel of Fate.
7. The first boss the player confronts is "Death", a large undead security guard carrying a club make from countless skulls. Death isn't killed in the same chapter the players face him however, but in one of the later chapters. Unlike the previous "House of the Dead" games, Chapters 2-4 offer three optional levels, which the player(s) can do in any order they wish. Which one of these three optional levels is one where you defeat Death?

Answer: Information Systems Dept. EAST Wing

The "Information Systems Dept. EAST Wing", or "WEST Wing" if you went through the entrance, is the level on the far right of the stage selection screen. As a change to the usual routine of facing a boss in one big fight at the end of a level however, the players confront Death immediately, which causes the entire level to have the boss BGM playing throughout.

The duration of the level is spent with the players running away from Death whilst confronting other undead, but Death chases them persistently, finally catching the player(s) midway through the level, and then later at the end of the level, where the player(s) finally finish him off.
8. The level where you face "The Sun", the plant boss, ends after the player(s) defeat it.

Answer: False

The Sun is faced during the "L2 BIO Plant" or "L3 BIO Lab" stages. Which one of these stages you play will depend whether you decided to head through the entrance or the parking lot in Chapter 1. The Sun is a giant tree growing out of a large pool of water, with faces all over it's bark, and countless skulls sticking out beneath it's pink and green petals.

It attacks with branches that come out the water until it's health is nearly drained, which is when it's real face will emerge.
9. Just as it has been for every other "House of the Dead" game before it, "House of the Dead 3" has multiple endings. How many endings in "House of the Dead 3" are there?

Answer: Four

Unlike the first two "House of the Dead" games, there are four endings in "House of the Dead 3" as opposed to the previous two games only having three. Where the first "House of the Dead" games have a good, a bad and a standard ending, "House of the Dead 3" has a good, a bad, a joke and a secret ending.

The good ending shows Lisa and Daniel emerging from the facility with Daniel talking about moving away from his past. When Lisa finally rushes off to meet up with G and her father, Daniel pauses for a moment and makes one last vow that if humans went down the wrong path, he'd return to the facility and continue what his father started.

The bad ending is set in the same scene as the good one, but Daniel is instead angry about his father's work being destroyed, and ends up transforming into a zombie.

The joke ending is once again set in the same scene, when Lisa and Daniel suddenly see their Land Rover being driven away. Thinking Rogan and G had left them behind, Lisa calls out to the driver, but hears her father behind her, and sees that G and Rogan are not in the car. The ending then shows that it is in fact a zombie who had stolen their car.

The secret ending takes place inside the facility, where a man in a black suit is shown limping across the room. The camera doesn't show a clear view of the man's face, leaving his identity unknown, as he picks up a phial saying "It seems he didn't understand it's true purpose", and that is all the ending shows.
10. The final boss in the game is "Wheel of Fate", Dr Curien's final legacy. Wheel of Fate is a metallic silver humanoid, with a small white star on his chest. Like all other bosses in the "House of the Dead" series, he also has a "Type" number, for example, Type-0011 Death. What is Wheel of Fate's type number?

Answer: 0000

Wheel of Fate is actually a resurrection of Dr Curien himself. He addresses Daniel like he is his son, saying to him "You need me", to which Daniel responds "You're not my father!".

To match his name, Wheel of Fate has a large metallic ring around him that always spins, and he also changes colour depending on the attack he is using, though these colours are always metallic. His overall fighting style can be compared to a combination of the previous "House of the Dead" final bosses, Magician and Emperor.
11. What is the name used in the console ports of "House of the Dead 3" for its standard Arcade Mode?

Answer: Survival

To fit with the theme of being in a zombie apocalypse, "House of the Dead 3" uses the name "Survival" as opposed to "Arcade Mode", which the previous two games used. In addition to the standard Survival mode, there is also "Time Attack", where the player plays through the game as normal but with a time limit, which increases with every zombie they kill, bonuses they shoot, and other features.

When the player is attacked, the timer will decrease greatly, and the only way Time Attack can end is if the player either completes the game, or their timer reaches zero.
12. One of the game's bosses is a large furry sloth with claws on its hands and feet that climbs around a circular cage at a great speed. What is the name of this boss?

Answer: The Fool

The Fool is the boss of the "EFI Genome Ward" and "D.B.R. Institute" levels. For the first half of the fight against him, he climbs around the cage trying to get closer to the player(s). The player(s) must shoot either one of the claws on his hands or one of the claws on his feet.

This will differ depending on the way The Fool is climbing, but will be highlighted so the player knows where to shoot. The Fool also has an attack where he shakes the cage, causing several corpses to fall down towards the player(s).

The player(s) must shoot the corpses to obliterate them and prevent them from being hit. The Fool's final attack has him leaping high into the air, trying to hit the player(s) with one of his claws. The player(s) must shoot the claw several times before it reaches them in order to stop themselves from losing a life.
13. What is the name of the final chapter?

Answer: Wheel of Fate

The final chapter in the game shares the same name as the final boss; Wheel of Fate. The display screen showing the chapter name shows images of Rogan and Curien, and their respective offspring Lisa and Daniel. It also shows an image of the Wheel of Fate boss and the Magician from the previous games, and then their genes to show that it was their genes that created Daniel's cure.

"The House of the Dead" and "The Original Sin" are the names of the final chapters from the first two "House of the Dead" games, 1 and 2 respectively.
14. Before one of the alternate endings is determined, the game shows a scene of G carrying the wounded Thomas Rogan out of the facility. After Rogan says to G "Thanks for taking care of Lisa for me", what is G's response?

Answer: "Actually, she did a pretty good job taking care of herself"

After saying this, Rogan talks about how it was the younger generation's future now, and how he was uncertain on whether things would change or whether things would be the same, and that everyone just needed to believe in themselves. Hearing Rogan say this, G comments that Lisa was starting to sound a bit like Rogan, to which Rogan replies that things were starting to change already.
15. And finally, when you receive your score in the "Time Attack" mode on the console and PC ports of the game, who is the character is that comments on how well you defeated the enemies?

Answer: Dr Curien

The Time Attack score is shown along with the average distance the zombies were away from you, and quickly you defeated them. Above this is a picture of Dr Curien, giving an appropriate comment depending on whether you killed the enemies more frequently at long range or close range, and how quickly you killed them.
