Answer: Texas

Joel is from Texas, and this is where the games prologue takes place. Joel's origin is mentioned by secondary characters like Tess who calls him 'Texas' and his brother Tommy who talks of going 'back home to Texas'.
2. What is the source of the devastating outbreak that leads to the world being as it is in "The Last of Us"?

Answer: Fungal spores

The outbreak was caused by a killer fungi that release spores that control the brains of living organisms by mutating them and spreading the infection. There are many points in the game where you see clusters of fungi giving off spores and Joel has to wear his gas mask. The more-mutated enemies such as Clickers and Bloaters have the fungi visibly growing on their bodies.

The materials used for crafting are Blade, Binding, Alcohol, Rag, Explosives and Sugar. Although you do find jars of nails it constitutes the 'Blade' resource.

The "Planet Earth" episode 'Jungles', which shows an ant get infected by the Cordyceps Fungus, was the main influence. This REAL LIFE fungus caused the ant to develop growths on its head that took control of its body. The concept of "The Last of Us" is that in the not too distant future the fungus suddenly mutates and is able to infect humans...
