The No-Croak Award is given at the end of each gaming year. Other than receiving game-related messages, some "Theme Hospital" players find the fax machine useful for cheating their way to the top! By typing in cheat codes on the fax machine, you can get pots of money amongst other perks.

If you click your computer mouse over a rat, you can shoot it. A handyman will conveniently dispose of any mess. One of the cheats accessible through the fax machine will take you to an extra level, where the aim is to shoot as many rats as possible.

Answer: Earthquakes

Look out for smoke pouring from severely damaged machines. without handyman maintenance, they can often explode rendering the machine and the room useless. In urgent cases, you can also pay to replace old machinery with new, resolving the problem before things get too far.

Answer: The plants are looking thirsty.

If you use the cheat codes then the receptionist will announce it, repeatedly saying "The hospital administrator is cheating! A cheat is running the hospital!" There is no impact on your credibility in the game but it can get annoying, so you might want to turn the announcements off until you're done...
