Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the man who created Wario?

Answer: Gunpei Yokoi

Lifelong Mario/Nintendo buffs such as myself know that Mario Segali was Miyamoto's landlord. He based his most famous creation, Mario, off of him. Wario is a creation of Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi. He lived from 1941-1997. Yokoi started working at Nintendo in 1965. Five years later, a passing Nintendo executive noticed a toy he created in his spare time, the "Ultra Hand." The toy became a big success.

When Nintendo began branching out into video games, it was Yokoi they turned to for many ideas. Yokoi also created the Game & Watch, which was released in 1980. Nine years afterward, the Game Boy, Yokoi's greatest creation, was released to the world. Sadly, he died in a car accident in 1997 when stopping to help someone who was in an accident. Yokoi should be forever remembered for his contributions to the video game world. Wario fans especially owe thanks and praise to him.
2. What is Wario's ethnic heritage?

Answer: Italian

Wario has an even thicker Italian accent than Mario. His voice is far more guttural and harsh.
3. In "Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins", Wario steals Mario's castle. After Mario gathers the six golden coins and opens the door to his castle, Wario has the place terribly booby trapped. How many giant gloved fist booby traps does Mario have to pass?

Answer: 3

"Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins" is the first game Wario appeared in. This happened back in 1992. The giant gloved fists have no official name from Nintendo. On the way to facing Wario, Mario encounters three of these booby traps. They resemble Wario's gloves.

They are attacted to a pole. They come crashing down to the floor if Mario steps on the wrong floor panel. Mario can avoid them all together if he jumps over the center floor panels which trigger the trap. If triggered on normal difficulty, they are almost impossible to evade. Mario also has to jump on six skull platforms that disintegrate when hopped on.
4. Also from "Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins", Mario winds up defeating Wario at the end of the game. What words pop up on the screen before the credits start rolling?

Answer: "Thank you, Mario. Your quest is over."

First, Wario attacks Wario in his normal state. Then, after three hits, Wario dons bunny ears and can now fly. After another three hits, he dons a fire flower. He can now shoot fireballs at Mario, making this his toughest state. Finally, after Mario hits him another three times, Wario returns to his normal size. Video gamers see for the first time what a temper tantrum crybaby he is.
5. Who does Wario fight at the end of his first adventure, "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3?"

Answer: a genie

In this 1993 game, Wario, being the greedy treasure hunter he is, is on the hunt for a life-sized golden statue in the semblance of Princess Toadstool. He must be crafty, for he knows Mario is looking for it as well. At the end of his journey, Captain Syrup sticks a huge genie on Wario, who is shocked to discover Syrup is a woman. Wario defeats the genie, and Syrup plants a huge bomb and bolts.

The castle is blown to cinders. Wario finds his precious statue. Unfortunately for him, Mario, piloting a small plane, nabs the statue and flys off. Wario is still able to bribe the genie with all the other treasure he found on his quest.

The genie makes him a magnificent castle.
6. "Wario Land 3" was the first Wario game of the new millenium. After Wario gets trapped in the music box, what does the "shadowy figure" claim to be?

Answer: a god

This game was released in 2000. The "shadowy figure" says that he was the god who protected the village. The "shadowy figure" begs and implores Wario for help. Wario must find the five music boxes so that the figure's power can be restored. Then and only then can the figure help Wario escape the music box.

After the intrepid Wario collects all five on his perilous journey, the "shadowy figure" turns out to be Rudy, the evil clown. He tries to kill Wario, but Wario defeats him by throwing his floating hands at his nose thrice.

It turns out Rudy transformed all of the people in the village into the creatures Wario faced in the game. They tried to stop Wario, for fear of Rudy's return. They never dreamed Wario was capable of defeating him.

Some people say that the game was not true to Wario's character, for he was helping someone else. This notion is ridiculous, as Wario believed he had to help the "shadowy figure" in order to escape the music box. Plus, the figure told Wario any treasure he found on his quest was his to keep.
7. From "Super Mario 64 DS", which of the following statements is true?

Answer: Wario is the only character to frighten a toad

It is possible for all four characters to get on the roof without the cannon. All characters can use the Metal Cap because all characters can put on Wario's cap to magically transform into Wario. Wario definitely is the strongest character in the game. Wario scares a toad, for he knows he is devious.

However, he knows that his power is needed to defeat Bowser. According to Nintendo, Wario is helping out to collect the treasure in the castle. He is still self-centered.
8. "Yoshi's Island DS" was the first video game Baby Wario appeared in. After what level did Baby Wario leave Yoshi?

Answer: 3-8

He left Yoshi to join the Bandits and use his magnet to find more coins. Interestingly, in 1995, Wario as a baby appeared in the German Club Nintendo comic "Warios Weihnachtsmärchen."
9. "Wario Land: Shake It!" was the first game in the "Wario Land" series to be released in nearly seven years. Which of these was not an enemy Wario faced in the game?

Answer: Venus Flytrap

There was no creature called a "Venus Flytrap." There was, however, a very annoying creature called a "Venus Guytrap." Other foes new to this game include: Volcannons, Nosedozers, Mummers, Recapitators, Bandideros, Peek-A-Booms, and the Jellopus.
10. "Mario Vs. Wario: The Birthday Bash" was a comic that appeared in "Nintendo Power Magazine" in 1994. Princess Toadstool's birthday was coming up in a few days. Both Wario and Mario saw Peach gawking at a Samus doll through a shop window. They both rush to buy it, and chaos ensues. What day of the week was Princess Toadstool's birthday that year?

Answer: Sunday

Mario and Wario both know that Peach wants this doll. Wario rushes to the store. The clerk tells Wario the last one had been sold to a guy with a mustache. Wario immediately assumes it was Mario. Wario buys a "gift" and asks the clerk to wrap it up to look just like the guy who bought the last doll's gift. The clerk laments to himself that he got two weirdos in the same day at his shop. The following Sunday, it is Princess Toadstool's birthday. When Mario goes to answer the door for the guests, Wario swaps his gift with Mario's. Wario gives Peach the gift. When she opens it, a wiggler jack-in-the-box pops out and smacks her in the face. Mario then gives Peach his gift, and the same thing happens. Mario and Wario are baffled. Peach is frantic and furious. She blames Mario and Wario for ruining her birthday. Luigi then gives Peach his gift. It turned out he had the Samus doll all along.

More interesting Wario information: Games from the "Wario Ware" series hint that Wario may have strong feelings for Mona. "Wario Blast! Featuring Bomberman!" is the only game Wario and Bomberman (or any character in the Mario universe, for that matter) ever appeared together in. "Wario World" was the only 3D Wario adventure in history.
