Super Mario 64 Trivia Questions

1. What is the main hub in this game?

From Quiz
The Ultimate "Super Mario 64" Quiz

Answer: Peach's Castle

Delfino Plaza is the main hub in "Super Mario Sunshine" for the Nintendo Gamecube. The Comet Observatory is in "Super Mario Galaxy" for the Nintendo Wii. Starship Mario is in "Super Mario Galaxy 2", which is also for the Nintendo Wii.

2. Guarding the second key, what can Bowser in the fire sea actually do?

From Quiz Super Mario 64 [2]

Answer: Teleport

Bowser is different than the first fight here. First of all, you can't grab him by running around him; he's too fast. So, you have to get as far away from him as possible without falling to make him charge you. When he does this, run away and grab his tail while he's sliding and fling him into a nearby bomb.

3. In the beginning of the game, what gift does Peach offer to Mario?

From Quiz Super Mario 64 [1]

Answer: A cake

In the beginning cutscene, Peach sends Mario a letter saying she's baked a cake for him. When Mario discovers Bowser has stolen Peach AGAIN, he sets off in his first 3-D platformer.

4. Level 1: Bob-omb Battlefield How many of the stars in this level require Mario to travel to the floating island (not counting the 100 coin star)?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64": One Per Level

Answer: Three

Star Three ("Shoot to the Island in the Sky") gets everything started. Mario must simply use a cannon to shoot himself to the floating island, and retrieve the star from inside a ! box. Star Four ("Find the Eight Red Coins") requires Mario to travel throughout the level to find eight red coins. Once he finds all eight, a star will appear in the field containing four wooden posts. One of the red coins is located on top of the tree on the floating island. Star Five ("Mario Wings to the Sky") requires Mario to once again travel to the floating island, then collect the center coin in the five rings of coins just off the tip of the island. This is accomplished by using the cannon on the island, and preferably the Wing Cap. It's tough to collect the star without the Wing Cap, but it can be done.

5. Through what method does Mario enter the castle grounds in "Super Mario 64" when you start a brand new game from scratch?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Outside the Castle

Answer: He enters through a warp pipe

Ever since the Mario games first began, Mario's preferred method of quick travel has been those classic green tubes (or warp pipes). This has been a classic element of the Mario games ever since the original "Super Mario Brothers" for the NES. In the case of "Mario 64", this is one of only a few times one of these items will be seen or used in the entire game.

6. Along with defeating the Big Bob-omb, what other star can be the first one that you attain?

From Quiz Super Mario 64

Answer: 'Behind Chain Chomp's Gate'

Koopa the Quick does not appear until after you defeat the Big Bob-Omb, so the star you get from him cannot be your first. Likewise, the Bob-omb Buddies only open the cannons after you defeat the Big Bob-omb, and one of the eight red coins is on top of the floating isle, which makes it impossible to get without the use of a cannon. Chip Off Whomp's Block is a star in Whomp's Fortress, which you need a star to enter, meaning that you can only defeat the Whomp King if you have already earned your first star.

7. Who created Mario (one of their many famous Nintendo characters)?

From Quiz What's In a Name? "Super Mario 64" Character Names

Answer: Shigeru Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto also created Link and Donkey Kong and Star Fox, just to name a few. Hajime Yajima, Daiki Iwamoto, and Toshio Iwawaki were all programmers on the "Super Mario 64" team, but they did not create the famous Italian plumber. Miyamoto has presented for Nintendo at many of the "E3" video game and electronics conventions. Without Miyamoto, platformers may not exist, and Nintendo would probably have been out of the console gaming business for a long time.

8. How many Piranha Plants are fought in the first task on "Tiny-Huge Island"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 13-15

Answer: Five

In the task 'Pluck the Piranha Flower' in the "Tiny Huge Island" stage, you need to either cross to the piranha plant area of the level while you're big, then shrink using the pipe, or you must circle the entire island while you're small. Once there, all you need to do is punch the five flowers while you're small, and you'll get the star. Watch out though, the flowers can shoot fire and bite at you.

9. What is not an enemy found in "Snowman's Land"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 10-12

Answer: Snufit

Snufits are more commonly found in "Hazy Maze Cave". Money Bags often contain money, but you can't see them until you go near them. When they appear, jump on them for about four coins. Amp is also in the level, but like always, he can't be defeated, and there is one Fly Guy usually floating around near the Amp.

10. How many Little Bullies must you defeat in the 'Bully the Bullies' task in "Lethal Lava Land" before you can fight the Big Bully?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 7-9

Answer: Three & 3

You must defeat the Big Bully in not only the second task, but also in the first task, 'Boil the Big Bully'. To defeat Big Bullies or Little Bullies, the strategy is the same; jump on them until your hits push them into the lava. When this happens, you'll usually get a coin or a star for your troubles.

11. How many stars require you to take the slide in the cottage in "Cool, Cool Mountain"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 4-6

Answer: Two

To complete the tasks 'Slip Slidin' Away' and 'Big Penguin Race', you need to take the slide. If you want to complete the track quicker, there's a 'somewhat' hidden path through the wall of the track, but you can only take it to get the first star. If the secret path is used in the 'Big Penguin Race', you'll have to redo the course.

12. How many times must you throw the Bob-omb King to defeat him in "Bob-omb Battlefield"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 1-3

Answer: Three

In the very first level task of "Bob-omb Battlefield" called 'Big Bom-omb on the Summit', you need to go to the highest point of the level and fight the Bob-omb King. To throw him, you need to run around behind him and lift him with the B-button. If you throw him over the edge of the mountain, he'll jump right back up, so you need to throw him right onto the ground. If you remain in front of him, he'll end up picking you up and throwing you.

13. What is the name of the big purple ball that has three red balls as legs?

From Quiz Super Mario 64

Answer: Chuckya

Chuckya will try to pick you up and throw you over the edge. To kill him, run behind him and punch him. You will then have picked him up and you must throw him by pressing "B" again. After this you will earn five coins.

14. How many times must you hit the eel in Jolly Roger Bay to kill him?

From Quiz The Ultimate "Super Mario 64" Quiz

Answer: None

You can't kill the eel in Jolly Roger Bay, as this is not needed. In case you didn't know, he can kill you, so be sure to be careful around him.

15. Wall Kicks Will Work is a mission in Cool, Cool Mountain that is rather hidden. What number mission is it?

From Quiz Super Mario 64 [2]

Answer: 6 & six

Wall Kicks Will Work is the final mission of Cool, Cool Mountain, along with the hundred coin star. To get here, Mario has to speak with the Bob-Omb Buddy and get him to open the cannon. Blast to the other side, and go along the thin path until you reach a spot with a heart. Wall kick up the first two walls, then do a triple jump before doing another wall kick. When you reach the bridge of ice, be careful not to slip then snag your prize.

16. When Mario enters Bob-Omb Battlefield, which character does he meet near the first cannon?

From Quiz Super Mario 64 [1]

Answer: Bob-Omb Buddy

Bob-Omb Buddies are vital in this game, as unlocking cannons must be used for several stars throughout the levels. Some levels don't have cannons, so therefore there is no Bob-Omb Buddy in them.

17. Level 2: Whomp's Fortress Which flying animal does Mario need to hitch a ride on to gain access to one of the stars?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64": One Per Level

Answer: an owl

Said owl (popularly named "Hoot") appears in the first tree right at the beginning of the level, after you've collected the first three or so stars in the stage. After Mario awakens the owl from his nap, he offers Mario a ride to the top of the fortress. The owl is not the easiest thing to control, but it's one of the only ways to obtain Star Five ("Fall Onto the Caged Island"). Mario must ride with the owl to gain access to the star on the caged island. It's also possible to use the cannon, but it's slightly more difficult.

18. "Super Mario 64" was one of two US launch titles for the Nintendo 64. What was the second launch title?

From Quiz Let's Play 06: "Super Mario Bros. 64" Part 1

Answer: Pilotwings 64

In Japan, there was a third launch title called "Saikyō Habu Shōgi" which is simply a board game. Miyamoto assisted the development team with "Pilot Wings 64".

19. According to the story, why does Mario come to the castle in the first place?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Outside the Castle

Answer: Princess Peach sent him a letter

When you choose a new game for the very first time, a brief cutscene plays before you begin the game. In this scene, you are given the opportunity to see a letter sent from Princess Peach to Mario inviting him to the castle. She says she has baked a cake for him. Of course, as it turns out, Peach is in trouble once again and Mario must save her but that is not his original purpose in coming to the castle.

20. What is the name of the fellow who follows Mario with a camera throughout the game?

From Quiz What's In a Name? "Super Mario 64" Character Names

Answer: Lakitu

Yes, Lakitus have been around since "Super Mario Bros." They used to throw those pesky red Spineys at Mario. Camera Creepers do not exist, Fly Guys are just Shy Guys with helicopter blades on their heads, and Paratroopas are Koopas with wings. The Lakitu in this game seems to be a part of a reporting company of some kind called the "Lakitu Bros." Lakitus appeared as enemies in this game as well, appearing in Rainbow Ride and Tiny, Huge Island.

21. In "Whomp's Fortress", where can you find Hoot the Owl?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" - One Per Course

Answer: In a tree

After obtaining the first two stars in the level, you can find Hoot the Owl in the tree next to the starting point. If you wake him up, he will fly you to the fifth star of the level. Once you're holding onto his talons, you can control him to fly you over a small cage containing the star. When you're confident that you can land into it, you can drop down and claim the star.

22. How many stars in "Tiny-Huge Island" are claimed while Mario is small?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 13-15

Answer: Five & 5

'Pluck the Piranha Flower', 'The Tip Top of Tiny-Huge Island, 'Rematch with Koopa the Quick', 'Wiggler's Red Coins', and 'Make Wiggler Squirm' are all completed while Mario is small. The only one where Mario is big, is the 'Five Itty Bitty Secrets' task. In it, you must find five small holes in order for a star to appear on a floating platform.

23. What will block the Snowman's breath when you are going for the 'Snowman's Big Head' star in "Snowman's Land"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 10-12

Answer: A penguin

On the journey for the level's first star, you'll need to climb up the giant snowman in the center of the level. When you reach the bridge in front of his face, he'll decide to blow you off, and if he's successful, you'll fly back to the start of the level (and your hat will be blown off). To pass by the wind, hide behind the heavy, big penguin as you go across and continue your climb.

24. How many movable slide puzzle pieces are in "Lethal Lava Land"?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 7-9

Answer: Fourteen

The sliding pieces rearrange themselves to form a picture of Bowser in the end. When this happens, a bunch of coins will sprout out of the center of the puzzle. The area is ventured to in the third task, '8-Coin Puzzle with 15 Pieces' although only fourteen actually move. The fifteen holds the star when the red coins are picked up.

25. How many little penguins can be found in the "Cool, Cool Mountain" level?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 4-6

Answer: Two

The one penguin at the start of the level needs to be returned to his parent at the base of the mountain in the 'Li'l Penguin Lost' task, but you can find a second penguin on top of the cottage at the base of the mountain. If you return this one to the parent, it says that it isn't hers.

26. During the 'Footrace with Koopa the Quick' stage in "Bob-omb Battlefield", what is on the top of the mountain?

From Quiz "Super Mario 64" Stages 1-3

Answer: A flagpole

In this second stage of "Bob-omb Battlefield", you need to race Koopa the Quick up to where the Bob-omb King was fought. A quick way to beat Koopa is by going around the level and taking the warp in the cave on the side of the mountain. If you touch the flagpole first, you win the star. Note: You must get the first star of this level before you can attempt this task.

27. What is the difference between a "Goomba" and a giant "Goomba"? (they are only seen in "Tiny-Huge Island")

From Quiz Super Mario 64

Answer: The Giant Goomba is only bigger, but it can also give you a Blue Coin if defeated a certain way

There is not much of a difference in battle, he's just a little bit harder to get on top of. You can jump, stomp, slide, or a kick to kill it. It is easier to kill than it looks. Ground Pounding it, however, will produce a blue coin.

28. How many levels (not counting bonus ones or Bowser ones) are there?

From Quiz 'Mario 64' Mania

Answer: 15

Rainbow Ride is the 15th Level.

29. There is a secret star level that you can access by jumping in the hole in the wall across from Rainbow Ride. What is the name of this level?

From Quiz The Ultimate "Super Mario 64" Quiz

Answer: Wing Mario over the Rainbow

This level lets you use the wing cap to collect eight red coins. Many players struggle with this level as it can be very tricky.

30. Which Toad gives you a star?

From Quiz Super Mario 64 [2]

Answer: The one near the entrance to Hazy Maze Cave

A few toads give you stars through the game. Once they give them to you, they can't make a darker already-obtained star. So make sure you talk to the toads!
