Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each race builds a different set of ships for each size class. Each race also names their ships differently. Which category best describes the names of ships created by the Teladi, a race of snake-like merchants?

Answer: Birds

Odd, but the snake-like Teladi name most of their ships after different kinds of birds. These include the Harrier, Buzzard, Falcon, Vulture, etcetera. The Boron name their ship after fish, Paranid give them greek mythology names, and most (but not all) Split ships are named after reptiles or other creepy-crawlies.
2. Which of the following types of lasers has the fastest projectile?

Answer: Alpha Impulse Ray Emitter

The Alpha IRE is also the weakest laser in terms of damage. It fires very quickly and flies very fast through space, making it very useful against small, fast fighters.
3. Which of these missiles is "Dumbfire"? (That is, it doesn't track the target, but rather flies straight forward)

Answer: Dragonfly

The dragonfly has no target-tracking system, therefore it's best to fire it at slow targets or from an optimal firing angle. All other missiles on this list have infra-red tracking (though they may get confused by the sun or even by other ships and missiles).
4. Which of these sectors does not contain a Pirate Base?

Answer: Profit Center Alpha

Pirate bases buy illegal goods, and they also sell some equipment which cannot be found elsewhere. However, Pirate Bases are dangerous - when you leave the station you might suddenly find that a bomb has been planted on your ship, which will explode after a short while. Nasty.
5. Which of these sectors is controlled by the Boron?

Answer: Rolk's Legacy

All sectors named "Rolk" belong to the Boron. This peaceful race lives on mostly watery planets, and each of their space-stations requires BoFu (A chemical) which is used by Boron to breathe (much like we use Oxygen). Montalaar and Omicron Lyrae are both Argon (Human) sectors, while Thynn's Abyss belongs to the Split.
6. Which of these is not a Xenon ship?

Answer: Xenon TZP

The Xenon are ruthless, and you would want to avoid their sectors if possible until such time when you have a ship strong enough to raid them, or construct a fleet that can assault their sectors directly. It is rumored that you can capture a Xenon ship during one of the bulletin-board missions (specifically, a taxi mission in the later stages of the game).
7. Which of these fighter variants is commonly the fastest?

Answer: Raider

Raider ships (Nova Raider, Harrier Raider, Octopus Raider, etc.) have a souped-up engine that makes them fly faster than other variants of the same ship type. In exchange, they have a smaller shield capacity, and often also reduced cargo space or weapon energy.
8. What is the lowest price at which stations buy or sell Energy Cells?

Answer: 12

12 is the lowest possible price for Energy Cells. Economy in this game works according to availability: A Solar Power Plant that has produced too much energy will sell it for 12cr (cheap!). Similarly, a factory that has purchased too much energy already will buy it at 12cr (not a good price).

The trick is always looking for stations with lots of product, and selling that product to stations running low on resources.
9. Which is the most expensive piece of software, and a prerequisite for initiating a Sector or Universe trader mission?

Answer: Trade Software MK3

Trade Software MK3 is sold at TerraCorp HQ in sector Home of Light (and a few other undisclosed locations). You will also need some other things in order to start a Sector or Universe trader, but the MK3 is the most expensive one. Fight Software MK3 and Navigation Software MK2 do not exist in the unmodded game. System Override Software is bought at Pirate bases and allows the player to claim enemy ships without having to force the pilot out first.

It is illegal, and will be detected by patrol craft if they manage to scan your ship.
10. Which of these factors will always help you convince enemy pilots to eject?

Answer: Luck

Unfortunately, as the game developers have claimed several times, ejections are largely random. There are ways to increase the probability of ejection though, by increasing the number of times the enemy pilot checks to see whether he should consider ejecting (I.E. trigger the random-number-generator). One way to do this is to use weaker weapons to drop the target's shields, then fly away while they recharge, and repeat. Each time the shields drop, and a little damage is done to the enemy's hull, he'll consider ejecting and may randomly decide to do so. With weaker weapons installed, there is less risk that you'll destroy the target's hull in the process, which would lower the ship's value and eventually destroy it. So weaker IREs or PACs are a better choice. Gamma Photon Pulse Cannons are extremely powerful, therefore unsuitable - they're used to destroy enemy capital ships. Alpha IREs are a common choice, and some people use Mass Drivers to weaken the hull first, because they don't destroy the target's onboard equipment.
