Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which video game developer published this game?

Answer: Bally Midway

Later known as Midway, the company was known as Bally Midway when "Xenophobe" was released in 1987. Originally involved with amusement manufacturing (think products like pinball machines), Bally Midway has a connection to other popular games such as "Space Invaders" and "Rampage". The company was also connected with pinball machines such as "Mr. and Ms. Pacman" and "Gilligan's Island".
2. Which is NOT one of the forms of "Xenos" that the player counts in the game?

Answer: Gremlins

Gremlins are the titular focus of the popular 1984 horror comedy film of the same name.

Xenos evolve through several forms in "Xenophobe". Pods are the first form the player encounters and develops from an egg. They next become Critters, which are able to drain a player's health by grabbing onto him or her. Critters become Rollerbabies, which can more actively move their bodies by rolling. Rollerbabies (shaped somewhat like large caterpillars) can jump and spit a harmful substance. One additional form in some versions of the game is a Festor, which has the power to hypnotize players and toss Xeno eggs from one room into another.
3. How many players are able to participate in the game at the same time?

Answer: Three

In this game, three players can play at the same time. The screen that shows the game is divided into thirds with each player highlighted in one of the thirds. While each player has a set of characters to choose from, the differences between the characters are more aesthetic than a difference in powers or abilities.
4. The characters controlled by the players are somewhat color-coded. Which character would NOT be seen with a RED shirt?

Answer: Dr. Udderbay

With the video game, the characters with red shirts are controlled by the player standing on the left side of the game: Mr. M.Brace, Dr. Kwack, and Col. Poupon. The player standing in front of the game controls the characters in yellow shirts: Mr. Fogg, Col F. Truth, and Dr. Udderbay.

The characters with blue shirts are controlled by the player standing on the right side: Mr. Eeez, Dr. Zordirz, and Col. Schickn.
5. What is the main goal of the game?

Answer: Destroy the aliens

While you might steal some alien weapons during game play, the ultimate goal is destroy the aliens. This fits well with the name "Xenophobe" which translates as fear or hatred of aliens. Whether encountered on a moon, spaceship, or space station, your score is largely calculated from how many and which type of aliens you have destroyed.
6. With what sort of weapon do players begin?

Answer: Phaser

The phaser releases small, short-range energy pulses. A robot will issue you a new phaser if you lose your old one. It is possible for the weapon to be knocked from your hand. There are also some other types of weapons for players to acquire during the game.
7. What type of video game is "Xenophobe"?

Answer: Side-scrolling shooter

The screen was divided into thirds from top to bottom. A player moved through the base from left to right. When playing the game, the three players had their controls left to right.
8. Is there a time limit in some levels of "Xenophobe"?

Answer: Yes

Depending on when you hit a particular button it is possible to halt the destruction of the base you inhabit or restart it. If you work together well, it is possible to eliminate the aliens from a base before it destructs.
9. Is the player on the screen always standing or moving upright?

Answer: No

It is possible to make your avatar jump (all in the upper part of the screen) or crouch (all in the lower part of the screen). There is some advantage to crouching since your avatar is harder to hit. The downside to crouching, however, is a reduced travel speed.
10. How do the avatars move from one base to another in "Xenophobe'?

Answer: Beaming

While a ship is also used to move players from one base to another you actual beam from a disc that come out of the ship. You earn a large point bonus if you completely clear a base of alien presence before it self-destructs.
