7. To which of these languages or subtypes of languages is Pennsylvania Dutch closest?

Answer: German

The term Pennsylvania Dutch is a misnomer, as the term Dutch is an echo from the word Deutsch in this case. Most Pennsylvania Dutch came from areas near the Rhine or had travelled to Dutch ports via the Rhine. The language they spoke was however not typically Low German or Plattdeutsch.

Many came from southern areas i.e. High German areas such as the Palatinate, Alsatia, Switzerland. Though Muenster had been used as a stronghold by Anabaptists and Mennonites, the Anabaptists and Mennonites themselves should be seen as having been recruited elsewhere, and using Muenster as a place of shelter.

The correct term should be Pennsylvania GERMAN as explained at www.kerchner.com. Pennsylvania Dutch are of German heritage, not Dutch.
8. In normal every day written Hebrew ( magazines, books, signs, newspapers - primers for learning the language excepted )there are 22 consonants and _________ vowels?
