Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This US airport was rated the world's busiest every year from 2000 to 2014. Which peach of an airport is it?

Answer: ATL - Atlanta

According to the Airport Council International, Atlanta had over 96 million passengers in 2014. Followed by Beijing (2nd-86 Mil), London (3rd-73 Mil), Tokyo (4th-72 Mil) and Los Angeles (5th-70 Mil).

Chicago (7th-70 Mil ) and Dallas-Fort Worth (9th-63 Mil) are also in the top 10.
2. Most large airlines use a 'hub and spoke' system in key cities. This is where they have a major presence and are usually the busiest airline. From 2000-2012, which airline had large hubs in both Newark New Jersey (EWR) and Houston Texas (IAH)?

Answer: Continental

Continental, which was based in Houston, had a major hub in Newark for many years. It merged with United Airlines in 2012. Avoiding JFK and LaGuardia airports, many people will take a plane from Houston to Newark and then catch the train (from the airport) to Penn Station in New York City.
3. America West Airlines merged with another large airline in 2010. Which east coast airline (one that had a major hub in Charlotte) was this?

Answer: US Airways

Although America West was the controlling airline, they decided to go with the name US Airways and discontinue the AWA name. A few years later, in 2015, US Airways itself merged with American Airlines.

The airline business is very competitive and dynamic, often going through feast and famine cycles. Consequently, we can expect to see more mergers in the future.
4. Boeing corporation has built quality passenger jets for several decades. Some of the most popular airplanes were the Boeing 727, 737, 747 and 757. Which of these has three jet engines?

Answer: 727

Known as the 727 Tri-jet, the airplane has 3 jet engines. The 737 has 2 engines, the 747 has 4 engines and the 757 has 2 engines.
5. Located close to the Salt river, in which city would you find Sky Harbor Airport, which handled over 20 million passengers in 2014?

Answer: Phoenix

Sky Harbor has 3 terminals (terminals 2, 3, and 4) with the busiest being terminal 4. Both US Airways and Southwest airlines have hubs there.
The Salt River is usually dry by the time it gets to Phoenix as there are several up river dams and the water is diverted for other uses.
6. Which large airline had its headquarters and the largest presence at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport (DFW) since it opened in 1973?

Answer: American Airlines

Located between the two cities, the Dallas-Fort Worth airport is American's home base and major hub. Southwest Airlines headquarters are also in Dallas but they are located at Love Field.
7. Which defunct airline, having gone bankrupt and subsequently acquired by American Airlines, was once owned by Howard Hughes?

Answer: Trans World Airlines - TWA

Similar to Pan AM, TWA was once a major airline serving the US, Europe and other international destinations. Prior to his selling TWA, Howard Hughes made several important advances in the commercial airline business.
8. Which airline has its headquarters in Chicago and a major hub at the Chicago O'Hare International airport?

Answer: United

This is United's home base. One of the busiest airports in America, O'Hare handles over 70 million passengers a year.
Chicago also has another significant airport (named Midway), into which Southwest Airlines flies.
9. Confusing for many flyers, what is the 3 digit airport code for Louis Armstrong International Airport located in New Orleans?

Answer: MSY

The MSY code was derived from Moisant Stock Yards. Daredevil aviator John Moisant died in 1910 in an airplane crash on the airport site and hence the code. An earlier New Orleans lakefront airport, still in use, retained the 'NEW' IOTA code.
10. As one of the original 'low cost' airlines, Southwest controlled their maintenance costs by flying one Boeing aircraft almost exclusively, reducing the need for extra engine spares and expertise. Which Boeing aircraft, the world's best selling airliner, was this?

Answer: 737

The 737 has many passenger models but all have the same basic design. It is the best selling airplane in history and considered one of the safest and most reliable jet liners.
