Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these cities sometimes has the nickname of "the Pearl of the Orient"?

Answer: Hong Kong

Did you know that a rough translation of "Hong Kong" is "fragrant harbour"? Hong Kong was originally a small fishing village but was developed through the 20th century to become one of the most important financial centres of the world. A British colony for most of this time, it was handed back over to China at the end of a 99-year lease in 1997.

The name "the Pearl of the Orient" is also sometimes given to Manila, Philippines, and also Penang in Malaysia.
2. Taipei was once home to the tallest building in the world. What is its name?

Answer: Taipei 101

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan. Taipei 101 boasts one of the world's fastest elevators, which rockets vistors to the top floors at 60 miles per hour!
3. Which of the following cities is closest to Hong Kong?

Answer: Shenzhen

Shenzhen is just on the mainland Chinese side of China's border with Hong Kong, and is a popular destination for bargain-hunting shoppers.
4. Hong Kong is made up of four separate parts, but which of these is not one of them?

8. Xi An is home to thousands of terracotta warriors which were once buried beneath the ground. How is it said that they were originally discovered?

Answer: Farmers digging a well

Believe it or not, the terracotta warriors were allegedly found by farmers digging a well, who began digging up broken pieces of statues instead of finding water. Archaeologists are still putting together broken pieces of warriors today.

Locals believe that the outline of one of the archer statues closely resembles the outline of Shaanxi province, the province in which Xi An lies, so the archer is particularly auspicious.
9. Animals are popular symbols in many Asian cultures, but which city has taken the fictional "mer-lion" as its namesake?

Answer: Singapore

The mer-lion is a creation of the Singaporean tourist board and was only adopted as a national and city symbol in the last 50 years.
