Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Secunda mensa' means literally 'second course'. What is the understood meaning?

Answer: Dessert

'Mensa' actually means table, but the Romans put each course on a board and that board was the table. Thus, table could also mean 'course (of a meal)'.
2. What tense does one use when one uses the word 'if' in Latin (where the condition can actually be fulfilled)?

Answer: future (perfect)

In English we use the present tense: If I go to town, I will buy a dress. In Latin, the tenses are more accurate. They would have said: If I shall be going to town, I will buy a dress.
3. What does 'aut ... aut ...' mean?

Answer: Either... or...

'Aut' by itself means 'or', but if there are two 'auts' then the pair mean 'either ... or ...'
4. What is daughter (filia) in the dative (and ablative) plural?

Answer: filiabus

It is 'filiabus' because otherwise it would be the same as son: 'filiis'.
5. What is 'enemy' in its singular form always translated into?

Answer: hostis

Hostis is singular but sometimes used as plural. Hostes is plural. This noun may also mean 'a stranger'.
6. In Latin, how many (numbered) declensions of nouns are there?

Answer: 5

There are five declensions. Some have only feminine words, some masculine, feminine and neuter. It depends.
7. How many (numbered) conjugations are there in Latin?

Answer: 4

4 conjugations there are!
8. What does 'omnes' mean?

Answer: Everyone

It is masculine and feminine and it means 'everyone'.
9. What does 'omnia' mean?

Answer: Everything

For 'everything' Latin uses the neuter plural.
10. How do you say 'The daughter of the wretched farmer is loved'?

Answer: Filia miseri agricolae amatur

I know, I know. This was impossible unless you take Latin. But, I just had to throw it in there.
