Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which B-52 model was armed with a 20mm M61 Vulcan in the tail turret?

Answer: B-52H

The G and H model had the tail gunner's station actually up in the front of the aircraft with the rest of the crew. From here he controlled the gun turret remotely. The G model still used the 4 x .50 inch machine guns like earlier versions. The B-52H was the last model produced and the only one to carry the M61 Vulcan six barrel rotary cannon.
2. Which of the following is not a crewmember of a B-52 bomber?

Answer: Flight Engineer

It's amazing with that many engines that the B-52 did not use a Flight Engineer. Other crew positions are or were pilot, radar navigator and gunner.
3. How many wing-mounted jet engines does a B-52 bomber have?

Answer: 8

8 x Pratt & Whitney J-57s (or TF-33s on the B-52H).
4. For many years, until the early 90s, the B-52 served in this iconic USAF major command. Which was it?

Answer: Strategic Air Command

The Strategic Air Command (SAC) was the original home of the B-52. In 1992 the USAF had a major reorganization and B-52s were transferred to the new Air Combat Command (ACC). As of 2009 the B-52H serves in the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC).
5. Which of the following operations was NOT a B-52 tasking during the Vietnam War?

Answer: Frequent Wind

B-52s served in all these operations except Frequent Wind. Frequent Wind was the evacuation of US civilians and some South Vietnamese citizens from the Saigon area. It occurred at the end of the conflict in 1975.
6. What aviation company built the B-52?

Answer: Boeing

The Boeing company built B-52s from its Seattle, Washington and Wichita, Kansas production facilities.
7. In total, how many B-52 bombers were manufactured?

Answer: 744

744 built from 1952 to 1962!
8. The B-52 is a massive bomber but has it ever shot down another aircraft?

Answer: Yes

Two MiG-21s in the Vietnam war were noted to be shot down by the tail gunners of the B-52D model.
9. During the Cold War the B-52 was often based with which inflight refueling tanker?

Answer: KC-135

The KC-135 Stratotanker was an important part of the B-52s strategic alert mission. The KC-135 would provide additional fuel to B-52s on their way to far off targets.
10. The B-52H was the last model of this bomber to serve in the USAF, and by the second decade of the 21st century there were only a couple of bases with B-52s still based there. Can you identify which of the following bases NEVER had B-52s assigned?

Answer: Shaw AFB, SC

Shaw AFB never had B-52s assigned to it on a permanent basis. It has primarly been a training or fighter base since its creation.
