Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was on the very first cover of "Rolling Stone"?

Answer: John Lennon

The first issue of "Rolling Stone" was published on November 9, 1967, with John Lennon on the cover. However, the covers in 1967 and the first few months of 1968 looked nothing like the covers we know today. "Rolling Stone" originally looked more like a newspaper than a magazine.

The picture of Lennon on the first cover was surrounded by articles. The first issue of "Rolling Stone" with just a picture on the front page, no articles, was published on April 6, 1968, with a picture from the Monterey Pop Festival on the cover.
2. Which boy band appeared pants-less on the very first cover of the year 2000?

Answer: Backstreet Boys

I'm embarrassed to say that this picture was on my bedroom wall for quite awhile. It appeared on the cover of the January 20, 2000 issue. The Backstreet Boys had been voted Artists of the Year (1999) by "Rolling Stone" readers. From the waist up, the guys were very stylishly dressed in suits, but their pants were around their ankles.
3. Members from which band (or the whole band itself) have received the coveted cover page picture 25 times?

Answer: Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones have been featured on 25 covers, from 1968 to 2005. This includes all the covers of just Mick Jagger and/or Keith Richards. Mick appeared alone on ten covers, Keith alone on four, and the two of them together were on six covers. Mick also appeared on a cover from 1970 with Anita Pallenberg. One other of the covers that are credited to The Rolling Stones was a photo of Brian Jones, in 1969.

The full band (with their line-ups at the times) appeared on only three covers.
4. Whose picture was on the cover of the 2003 "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" issue?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Published as a Collector's Edition in August 2003, Hendrix was on the cover because he was ranked as the number one guitarist of all time on the issue's list. Chuck Berry placed sixth, George Harrison was 21st, and Slash was not included on the list (clearly a gross oversight).
5. Which of these characters was NOT featured on a "Rolling Stone" cover?

Answer: Ed the Sock

Jar Jar Binks, from "Star Wars", was on the June 24, 1999 cover. He was pictured reading an old copy of "Rolling Stone" that had the original "Star Wars" gang on the cover (an actual cover photo from 1977).

Bart Simpson was on the June 28, 1990 cover. He was also used on the November 28, 2002 cover as the naked baby in a spoof of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album.

Mike Myers has been on two covers: June 10, 1999 in full Austin Powers get-up, and March 19, 1992 with Dana Carvey as their characters from "Wayne's World".

Ed the Sock is a sarcastic, talking hand puppet most well-known for his work on MuchMusic in Canada.
6. In August 2001, five different versions of the same issue were printed, each with an individual picture of the members of a band; which band?

Answer: 'N Sync

All released on August 16, 2001, Lance Bass appeared on a green cover, JC Chasez on blue, Chris Kirkpatrick on purple, Joey Fatone on pink and Justin Timberlake on yellow. A sixth version of the August 16 issue was published, with a picture of all five of them together.
7. Was Kurt Cobain on the cover of "Rolling Stone" the week he died?

Answer: No

Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, died on April 5, 1994, as a result of suicide (though that ruling is still controversial). Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers was on the "Rolling Stone" cover that week, on an issue that was released on April 7, 1994.

The Cobain tribute issue did not come out until June 2, 1994. It was just a picture of Kurt and the only writing on the cover, other than the "Rolling Stone" banner was the simple "Kurt Cobain, 1967-1994".
8. In November 1988, "Rolling Stone" came out with "The Comedy Issue". Who was on the cover?

Answer: Johnny Carson and David Letterman

"The Comedy Issue" was published on November 3, 1988. Many other comedians have appeared on other covers, however. "Rolling Stone" categorizes 28 of their covers under "Comedians", including all of the others listed as incorrect choices.
9. Which "bad boy" had a snake wound around his neck for his cover photo?

Answer: Alice Cooper

This was pictured on the cover of the March 30, 1972 issue, with the words "Love it to Death". All of the other "bad boys" listed appeared on "Rolling Stone" covers, but most of their photos were relatively normal - with the exception of Marilyn Manson's 1998 cover in which he seems to be dressed as some sort of robot. In any case, it's odd.
10. Which of these did NOT appear naked or nearly naked in one of their cover photos?

Answer: 50 Cent

Rollingstone.com's archive of cover photos has 48 pictures in their "Getting Naked" section. Most of them are not bad, as many of the pictures included were simply photos of shirtless men, but there are a few that are pretty racy!

Jennifer Aniston's first nude cover was on March 7, 1996, in which she is lying naked, face-down, on a bed. She had a second cover in the naked section (March 4, 1999), but in this photo she is not so much naked as scantily clad.

Brooke Shields offered us a side view of her naked body on the October 3, 1996 cover.

Billy Idol got naked, except for a leather loincloth type of thing, in January 1985.
