Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these buildings in New York City was the first one built?

Answer: Chrysler Building

The Chrysler building was completed in 1930, the Empire State Building was completed in 1931, and the World Trade Center was completed in 1972.
2. In January 2006, which of these buildings was the tallest in New York City?

Answer: Empire State Building

The Empire State building was the tallest in the world from 1931-1972. It then lost that title when the World Trade Center was completed. It regained the title of NYC's tallest building on September 11, 2001, but it never got back the title of the world's tallest building.
3. Which NYC building held the title of Tallest Building in World the longest?

Answer: Empire State Building

The Empire State Building held the title for 41 1/2 years - from 1931 to April 1972. Both the World Trade Center and the Chrysler building held the title for only 1 year. The WTC: 1972-1973, and the Chrysler: 1930-1931.
4. Which was the first building to be destroyed?

Answer: World Trade Center

The World Trade Center is the ONLY one destroyed. The twin towers were completed 1972 and destroyed 2001.
5. NYC has its share of planes and buildings. Which of these three buildings have had planes flown into them?

Answer: both World Trade Centers (north and south towers), and the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building didn't get hit as hard as the WTC, but it did get hit. On July 28, 1945 a B-25 Mitchell bomber accidentally crashed into the north side between the 79th and 80th floors. 14 died, but the building didn't collapse. The World Trade Center's towers were hit on September 11, 2001 by two hijacked commercial airplanes.

The south tower collapsed first, followed closely by the north one. Almost 3,000 people died. The Chrysler building has never been hit by a plane, and hopefully never will.
6. Which of these buildings is/was 1,048 feet high?

Answer: Chrysler Building

The Chrysler building stands 1,048 feet tall, the Empire State building stands 1,250 feet tall, and the World Trade Center stood 1,368.
7. Which of these buildings is/was 1,368 feet tall?

Answer: World Trade Center

The Chrysler Building is the shortest of the three, the Empire State building is second tallest and the World Trade Center was the tallest. Now, the Empire is the tallest, and the Chrysler is second tallest.
8. Which one of the buildings has/had lights on three levels of the roof, which are/were turned on for holidays and special events?

Answer: Empire State Building

The Empire State Building turns on its lights for holidays, e.g. for the 4th of July; the colors are red, white and blue.
9. As you already know, NYC has had its share in planes and buildings. But what about bombs and buildings. Which of these buildings had a bomb explode in the underground parking garage in 1993?

Answer: World Trade Center (north tower)

On February 26, 1993 a truck bomb exploded in the north tower of the World Trade Center's underground parking garage. This terrorist attack killed 6, and injured over 1000.
10. The Chrysler building is the world's tallest brick building.

Answer: true

Even though the Empire State building overtook the Chrysler building as the tallest, the Chrysler building still has some good records of its own. For one, it's the world's largest brick building, with 3,826,000 bricks. It was the first building in the world to exceed 1,000 feet.
11. There have been several films made about the giant ape, "King Kong". Which of these buildings did he climb in both the original 1933 movie and the 2005 remake (but NOT the 1976 version)?

Answer: Empire State Building

In both the 1933 and 2005 versions, King Kong climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, before tragically falling to his death. In the 1976 version, he climbs the South Tower of the World Trade Centre, before leaping across to the North Tower. So far, the Chrysler Building has remained safe from the ravages of a giant ape.
12. Which building has/had the highest-grossing restaurant in the United States inside of it?

Answer: World Trade Center (north tower)

Windows on the World was located on the 107th floor of the north World Trade Center. In 2000, its last full year of operation, Windows on the World reported it made $37.5 million United States dollars, making it the highest-grossing restaurant in the United States.
