Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what date did Canada officially enter the World War II?

Answer: September 10, 1939

Parliament hesitated to declare war because this was the first war in which Canada was completely independent, and thus had the power to declare war. In WWI, Canada automatically declared war when Great Britain did because Canada was not yet fully independent.

Five thousand Canadians participated in the raid, along with 1000 British and 50 American Rangers. About half of the Canadians did not return. There were some 900 KIA as well as many prisoners. Few objectives were actually met, but this proved to be a costly but necessary lesson for the upcoming Normandy invasion. Two Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their service.
3. What beach were the Canadians responsible for on the June 6, 1944 invasion of Normandy?

The U.S. took Omaha and Utah beaches, and the British took Gold and Sword beaches.

One Canadian was awarded a Victoria Cross for the battle at Hong Kong.
