Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Formed in 1910, what was the exact date that the Royal Canadian Navy came into being?

Answer: May 4, 1910

Up to that point, British naval vessels helped protect Canada.
2. What was the original name of the RCN?

Answer: Naval Service of Canada

Operationally, it was known as the Canadian Naval Forces.
3. How many ships did the new navy have?

Answer: 2

The HMS Rainbow and the HMS Niobe were acquired from the British Navy. By the end of the WWI the fleet had expanded to six ships including two submarines.
4. During which period was the Canadian Navy at its largest size?

Answer: 1940-1945

During WWII, the Canadian Navy was the third largest navy in the world. Its primary tasks were in the North Atlantic, including convoy duty.
5. The name of the Naval Service of Canada was changed in 1911 to the Royal Canadian Navy. Who was the monarch who gave permission for the new name?

Answer: George V

The use of the word Royal must always be approved by the Monarch.
6. In 1968 a major change happened to the navy and caused great consternation. What happened to the Navy (and the army and air force)?

Answer: Unification

Most 'old timers' were opposed to the move. It created demoralization, and there were numerous resignations and retirements throughout all three branches of the services.
7. After which US weather crisis were Canadian naval forces among the first aid deployed along the Gulf of Mexico?

Answer: Hurricane Katrina

The Canadian Navy has been involved in relief efforts in a number of areas, including Louisiana and Haiti. In the case of Hurricane Katrina, ships from both the Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard were involved and about 900 Canadian Forces members, including 35 navy and army divers based in New Orleans, assisted in recovery operations.
8. Technically, the Royal Canadian Navy did not exist for 43 years. What was its (now defunct) official name during that period of time?

Answer: Canadian Forces Maritime Command

Canadian Forces Maritime Command (Marcom) became the navy's official name after unification in 1968. It again became the Royal Canadian Navy in 2011.
9. During which world crisis did Canada add the Red Ensign (along with the White Ensign) to help the separate identification of Canadian from British ships?

Answer: Suez Crisis

Since the Canadian government differed in its foreign policy from Britain, there was a need to make sure Canadian ships were identifiably Canadian. The Blue Ensign had been adopted in 1911, but was used mainly in port. Canadian ships began to fly the Red Ensign at the masthead. When the new Maple Leaf flag was adopted in 1965, this was no longer a problem.
10. During WWII, most of the names of the Destroyers in the RCN fell into three classes. What were these classes?

Answer: Tribal, Town, River

The Tribal group were all named for First Nations in Canada. They were HMCS Athabaskan, Haida, Huron, Nootka, Micmac, Cayuga, and the second Athabaskan (named after the first one was sunk). River and City ships were named for Canadian rivers and towns. There were also two V class destroyers named for First Nations (Algonquin and Sioux).
