4. What type of sub-machine gun was issued to section leaders in the Battalion?

The Sten Machine-Carbine was issued to both British and Canadian section leaders, due to its ease of production and small, inexpensive 9mm ammunition. The Sten fired around 550 rounds per minute.
5. Which unit did command of the Battalion fall under?

Answer: British 6th Airborne

Once training was complete, the Battalion was shipped over to Britain, where command of the unit passed to the British 6th Airborne Division.
6. What was the name of the only member of the Battalion to win the Victoria Cross?

Corporal Fred Topham was awarded the Victoria Cross for exemplary bravery and selflessness while rescuing several men from a burning halftrack. He was shot through the nose himself, but refused medical attention until all the other casualties had been returned to safety.
7. Pick one other major offensive that the Battalion took part in.

Answer: Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing)

The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was a key element in the Rhine Crossing on March 24, 1945. They attacked alongside the 6th Airborne Division, and were supported by glider troops from the Air Landing Brigade.
8. Where was the first jump course held for soldiers with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion?

Answer: Fort Benning, GA

Troops from the Battalion were sent to Fort Benning, Georgia to train alongside troops with the 82nd Airborne. After that training, they were sent to England to train with the 6th Airborne. After that, they returned to Canada to develop their own course at Camp Shilo, Manitoba.
9. Who was given command of the brigade?

Answer: General S. James Hill

Brigadier-General S. James Hill commanded of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. He would go down in history for his simple, yet very effective training methods.
10. What pattern of web gear did the Battalion wear into battle?

Answer: Pattern 37

P37 Web Gear was issued to the Battalion, along with most other Commonwealth troops. The gear was surprisingly comfortable (I own a complete uniform of the Battalion) for the amount of gear that had to be carried in it. Being as paratroopers had to drop in far behind enemy lines, they required far more equipment than a standard infantryman, but still had to keep it light enough that they would not be injured on landing. I jumped out of a plane and hit the ground pretty hard, and I only had my street clothes on, let alone several weeks worth of equipment!
