Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mass opens with "in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti." What are our opening words?

Answer: In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

It is customary to cross yourself as you say these words. Using the open right hand, start at your forehead (in the name of the Father), down to the base of your sternum (and of the Son), then from your left shoulder to your right (and of the Holy Spirit).

This is in the Latin Rite. The Eastern Rite churches do it a little bit differently.
2. When the priest says "Dominus vobiscum', what is the proper response?

Answer: Et cum spiritu tuo

The priest says "The Lord be with you", and your response is "And with your spirit".
3. Immediately preceding the Preface, we lift up our hearts. The priest says "Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro". What has he just said?

Answer: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

We give thanks to God, for his mercy endures forever. Psalms 136:1
4. After the Preface, we sing "Holy, Holy, Holy", otherwise known as what?

Answer: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus

I always love when we sing the Sanctus in Latin.
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.
or
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy Glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
5. "Gloria in excelsis Deo" - What is the opening line of "The Gloria"?

Answer: Glory to God in the highest

Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of goodwill.
6. When they receive Holy Communion, Roman Catholics receive corpus Christi and sanguis Christi.

Answer: True

In the sacrament of Holy Eucharist, Catholics receive the actual body and the blood of Christ. This is not a representation, but the real deal. Catholics believe that the bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood through transubstantiation.
7. During the breaking of the bread, preceding communion, we sing the "Agnus Dei". What is that song we sing?

Answer: Lamb of God

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi; miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi; miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi; dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; grant us peace.
8. One prayer, commonly used in the Rosary, begins "Ave Maria, gratia plena". Which prayer have we just begun?

Answer: The Hail Mary

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

How wonderful is it that we can ask the mother of our Lord to pray for us?
9. Commonly used in the Rosary, the Fatima Prayer begins "O Bone Jesu, libera nos a peccatis nostris". What are we saying?

Answer: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins

O Bone Jesu, libera nos a peccatis nostris;
libera nos ab ignibus gehennae;
perduc in paradisum omnes animas praesertim
eas quae plus misericordia tua indigent!

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell;
lead all souls to heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy Mercy!
10. At the end of Mass, we are dismissed with the words "Oremus: vade in pace" or "Vade ad amorem et serviemus Domino." What is our response?

Answer: Deo gratias

When the priest or deacon tells us to "The Mass is ended: go in peace" or "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord", our response is "Thanks be to God".

Amen = it is so
Ibimus = we will go
Ut vadas in pace = we go in peace
