Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Nihon" or "Nippon"?

Answer: Japan

Both names are widely used, although "Nippon" is the word that appears on postage stamps and is chanted at football matches!
2. How about "Osutoria"?

Answer: Austria

There are four distinct alphabets used in Japanese. Hiragana is a phonetic alphabet and the first form of writing that young children learn; Kanji consists of Chinese characters; Katakana is used primarily for foreign or borrowed (katakanized) words (and thus widely used for place names); and Romaji, or romanized text, is what you are reading right now!
3. "Itaria"?

Answer: Italy

Many letter Ls become Rs when Romanised.
4. Which Asian country do the Japanese refer to as "Chugoku"?

Answer: China

Only a few countries have names that are not borrowed from another language. Most of these, such as China, have been known to the Japanese since ancient times.
5. Ok, now to Europe: "Doitsu"?

Answer: Germany

"Doitsu" is the katakanized version of the German word for Germany itself, "Deutschland".
6. "Nyujirando"?

Answer: New Zealand

Katakana is a phonetic alphabet, and this is the closest approximation of "New Zealand".
7. Ok, back to Asia again: "Kankoku"?

Answer: South Korea

Place names have been a point of contention between Japan and Korea for many years. The Koreans, for example, refuse to call "The Sea of Japan" by this name, instead preferring "The East Sea". The South Korean government has petitioned several international bodies, demanding a worldwide name change!
8. "Oranda"?

Answer: The Netherlands

Taken from "Holland".
9. How about "Gana"?

Answer: Ghana

The word "Ghana" in Japan refers to a top selling brand of chocolate sold by the Lotte confectionery company.
10. "Rengo Okoku"?

Answer: The United Kingdom

More commonly referred to as "Igirisu" or (heaven forbid!) "Ingurando".
