Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you worked as an "anaunsaa", what would you be?

Answer: announcer

If you are a news anchorperson, then you would probably be labeled as an "anaunsaa". The word is often shortened to "ana" as well. So if your last name was Tanaka, you might be called Tanaka-ana.
2. If someone asked you about your "muudo", what would they be asking you about?

Answer: Your mood

"Muudo" functions just like the English word mood. It can be used to describe a person's mood, or a set atmosphere or environment.
3. If you live in Japan, someone might suggest that you get an "arubaito". What should you get?

Answer: a part-time job

Originating from the German word "arbeit" which means "work" (also "job"), "arubaito" has gone on to inherit the meaning of a part-time or temporary job. It also appears in a shortened form nowadays as "baito".
4. A friend in Japan might say that they feel like eating "gurume" food. What kind of food would they have a craving for?

Answer: gourmet food

As it sounds, "gurume" means gourmet in English. A lot of times "gurume" can be used in a general fashion to mean a more fancy type of food.
5. If I needed to go to a "sutajio", where would you lead me to?

Answer: a studio

"Di" will be commonly replaced with "Ji" in Japanese, and this can lead to some very hard to decipher gairaigo, since you do not know whether this switch has occurred.
6. What sport does the word "booringu" refer to?

Answer: bowling

As bowling is originally a Western sport that was introduced into Japan, there is no Japanese word for it, although now it is a popular Japanese activity.
7. It might be handy to own a "pasokon" while living in Japan. What might you want to buy if you plan on staying in Japan?

Answer: a personal computer

"Pasokon" is really two abbreviated words combined ("paso" from "pasonaaru" and "kon" from "konpyuuta"). More commonly known as a PC. Although from what I know, all computers used for personal purposes, whether it be a PC or a MAC, are referred to as "pasokon" in Japan.
8. If a child is wearing a "ryukku", what does he/she have on?

Answer: backpack

"Ryukku" comes from the word rucksack, otherwise known as a knapsack or backpack. Most commonly seen on pre-school to elementary aged children.
9. Your friend wants to see some "irasuto". What does your friend want to see?

Answer: Illustrations

"Irasuto" comes from the beginning of the word "illustration".
10. If someone gave you an "ankeeto", what did they just give you?

Answer: a questionnaire

Originating from the French word "enquete" which means an inquiry, "ankeeto" has taken on the meaning of a questionnaire or survey, and if you buy certain products, they might ask you to fill out an "ankeeto". Hope you learned something new from this quiz!
