Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Karamu
Answer: December 31
It's actually Karamu Ya Imani and it's a large feast that's celebrated during Kwanzaa. Some people call it the Feast of Faith and is one of the seven days of Kwanzaa (which is another question in this quiz). Surprisingly this feast originated in the United States, specifically in Chicago in 1971.
2. Boxing Day
Answer: December 26
Boxing Day is celebrated by the people from New Zealand, Australia and United Kingdom, among others. If you ask someone why they celebrate Boxing Day, you'll get one of many answers and some people have no idea whatsoever, but they enjoy the day after Christmas without working. In all seriousness, the UK countries all keep the banks closed on this day.
3. National Cookie Day
Answer: December 4
This is a holiday in the United States, and was thought up by Matt Nader. We not only have "Cookie Day" but there's also "Oatmeal Cookie Day" on April 30th and "National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day" on August 4th. What do we do on Cookie day? We bake cookies. Bakers everywhere around the US and parents get their children involved as well. Pour a glass of milk and lets go get us some cookies. Make sure we freeze a few for Santa.
4. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
Answer: December 7
As I watched the movie, "Pearl Harbor" with Ben Affleck, I could not imagine what it was like on that fateful day in Hawaii. As I was sitting home on 9/11 and just the sheer shock of having been attacked by terrorists, sort of put it in perspective to me.
These people were out enjoying the sunshine and all of a sudden the bombings kept happening over and over, the Japanese sweeping the little island with bomb after bomb. Over 2400 people were killed due to the attack and one day that will live in our memories forever.
5. Kwanzaa
Answer: December 26 to January 1
This is a celebration for the entire seven days. It was started by a Professor, Dr. Karega in California. It doesn't really matter how you celebrate this holiday. Some sing and dance, some read or play instruments. It is of African culture though and teamed up with Karamu, which is held only one day on December 31.
Each day is teamed up with a different item. Some include an ear of corn, while one day has a candleholder. The last day is the day of gift giving. You want to give a gift of encouragement or success.
6. First day of winter in northern hemisphere
Answer: December 21 or 22
They select the date of winter in the Northern hemisphere from winter solstice. This day is actually the shortest day of the year. I like to look forward to the next day because it means summer is one day closer then.
The day could be one or the other based on time zone differences around the world. So no, the first day of winter is never the exact same date every year.
7. St. Nicholas Day
Answer: December 5th (eve) or 6th
St. Nicholas was a saint who sold all of his belongings and gave all of the money away to the poor. Some people think he was the man who inspired Santa Claus, aka St. Nick. This is more of a United States holiday, while Poland celebrates with Mikolajki, their form of the same day.
8. Immaculate Conception Day
Answer: December 8
This date is observed by the Roman Catholics. They observe this date for the Virgin Mary, who was the "Pure Mother of God". What do you do to celebrate this day? You dance, wear costumes and light off fireworks.
This date was called many different names, (family day) and was observed around the world over the years and more and more religious beliefs have also come to celebrate the date. Most of the countries that celebrate the event are in Europe, but not all, with Guam and Columbia also celebrating too.
9. Crossword Puzzle Day
Answer: December 21
The very first Crossword Puzzle appeared in the New York World newspaper on this day in 1913. You can see puzzles daily in the newspapers still today. You can also find crossword puzzles here in Fun Trivia. Give it a try, you may enjoy them.
10. Holy Innocents' Day (Catholic)
Answer: December 28
This day originated in the Biblical story of Jesus' birth, in which King Herod, in order to kill the young child, ordered all male children under the age of 2 to be killed. I really wouldn't call this a celebration, but a day to remember the families that lost their child.
