Sinterklaas, the Children's Saint Quiz

It's that time of year when I roam around the country and make children happy with presents and other stuff. I thought it was most appropriate to show you in this quiz how I work, for isn't it all about Public Relations?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is a coincidence that your truly (that is, Sinterklaas) has a kind of colleague, who bears almost the same name and who gives away presents as well.

Answer: False

The "colleague" I'm talking about is Santa Claus of course. Dutch settlers in the America kept the tradition of celebrating my birthday, but you know how it goes. When you are a minority and somebody takes over your tradition, it is adapted to suit the majority. My name changed from Sinterklaas to Santa Claus, my black servants disappeared and my horse was replaced by reindeers. I got a big belly, I got my home at the North Pole and festivities started around Christmas instead of the start of December. Well, I guess it had to be.

But now you know where Santa comes from. I am so to speak his uncle! I am THE Santa.
2. Although I'm also known outside the Low Countries, I still have a special bond with them. For instance, they call me Sinterklaas, a nice pet name if you ask me. But how did I get that name?

Answer: It was derived from Saint Nicholas.

And did you know that I am a patron saint of many ports, Amsterdam being one of them? They have erected a church there in my honor, would you believe?
3. I have lived in Spain for quite a while. But am I a native of that country?

Answer: No, I am from Asia Minor

My age is almost 20 centuries as I was born in Patara in AD 280. Later in life I became the Bishop of Myra which was close to my place of birth.
4. I have some black servants, who help me with everything I do. After all, I am a very old man. I'm sure, that at birth they gave me a Christian name, but when they come to work for me, they adopt the same name. What name is that? (I'll give you the Dutch name, with the English name in brackets)

Answer: Piet (Peter)

As the centuries have passed, I really have forgotten how they came to be my loyal servants. If I have to believe them, they are Moorish, hence their black skin. But from other sources I hear that they were originally demons, who were forced by me to do good deeds. Anyway, they have become indispensable.
5. With my assistants, I spend most of the year buying and packing presents for the young folk. A hard job, but you have to do it. Then, at the end of November, I leave for Holland. How do I travel?

Answer: On a steamboat

I cannot disappoint the young children as they expect me to arrive that way. A locomotive through the Pyrenees? No thanks. On a sleigh? That's for the other Santa! A plane? I suffer from aerophobia, thank you very much.
6. So I buy a lot of presents. But there are some sweet goodies for the children as well. Dentists have a field day after I've left. One of the things they get from me and my assistants is chocolate in a particular form. What form?

Answer: A letter

It should be the letter their name starts with - that's optional of course. Don't think these letters are tiny. They can weigh from 2 to 7 ounces. Ouch, do I feel a hole in my tooth?
7. It comes with the job that I have to travel up and down the country in just one day. So it is most fortunate that on my real birthday (December 6th) I can rest. Anyway, what most reliable means of transport do I use for this arduous job?

Answer: My faithful grey horse

As old as I am, I am prone to keep a tradition. Hot air balloons are younger than yours truly. I've never heard of a vessel that can fly, and a sleigh is for my nephew.
8. Communication is the name of the game I cannot go round giving presents away at random. I need a sign of some sorts. How do the anticipating kids signal that I have to stop at their home and drop all the goodies?

Answer: They sing songs

They have many songs at their disposal. Those who don't sing, won't get anything, it's that easy. Pity, as I've spent so much time and money on them, but that's the way it goes.
9. It is not just buying and packing, it is also writing I do. And the children have to read that text before they can open their presents. What kind of text is it?

Answer: A rhyme

All the wrong answers are a load of rubbish. After all, don't expect little children to be able to read difficult words. It is about rhyming. I used to start with: The Saint has been thinking very long about what he should give to you (which is a translation of: De Sint heeft heel lang zitten denken, wat hij jou zou moeten schenken).
10. If you expect that everybody relishes my arrival, think again. People consider me a kind old gentleman, but I can be harsh to those who have been bad. I can order my servant to thrash them with a birch-rod (bundle of sticks). But the punishment can be much, much worse. What is the really nasty punishment?

Answer: I put them in a bag

And at sea I throw them overboard - just to scare them. The coastguard is on high alert and picks them up before they drown.
